Feature and Giveaway: Run Die Hide by PM Kavanaugh

Follow orders or die. Anika Washington knows the rules laid down by the counterterrorist agency that owns her. When she aborts a mission in order to spare a young girl, she’s given an ultimatum: take on a new mission that requires betraying her fellow operative, and lover, or forfeit her own life.

After discovering that her lover, Gianni, has chosen another, Anika accepts the mission. In the aftermath, she learns that Gianni was faithful to her and she’d been tricked into thinking otherwise. The knowledge comes too late and she’s almost killed in an agency double-cross.

Now she must run—battling time, former enemies and the agency itself to stay alive and save the man she loves.

“Why?”

The single word jabbed Anika like a fist when she stepped inside her loft. She didn’t know Gianni had returned. It had been five miserable weeks since he had left for what she thought was the honeymoon mission with Jewel. The one she now knew had been cancelled.

“How long have you been back?” She dropped her gear on the low table in the middle of her living room.

“Long enough to learn you missed the target. What happened?” The vein in Gianni’s lower jaw pulsed an angry beat.

What she had to tell him wouldn’t improve his mood. As her vision adjusted to the indoor light, she noted fatigue lines around his mouth and a hollowing underneath his eyes.

“I’ve already explained what happened to the debriefing team. It’s all on disc.” She walked into the kitchen where she grabbed a tube of herb water out of the cold cell and took several swallows.

Stop stalling and tell him.

He loomed in the doorway. “What about your promise? The one about you lying low?”

“I thought I had the target.” She finished off the tube and tossed it into the recycler. “I missed. That’s all.”

“You don’t miss.” His words lashed across the room.

“The P-16 isn’t as precise as laser.” Do it now. Before you lose your nerve.

When I was a kid, my sisters and I played “spy.” This meant sneaking around buildings or empty lots or neighborhoods or parks pretending to hide from bad guys or, if we spotted “suspicious” strangers, spying on them!

Ever since then, I’ve loved stories of intrigue and action whether told in books, movies or TV shows. The only thing better than a spy/action/adventure story is one that adds in romance. That’s the kind of story that grabs my imagination and chains me to the computer to write.

When I’m not dreaming up scenes and dialogue, I consult with clients on a range of marketing and branding projects. This, too, can involve writing though it’s usually done as short bullet points in PowerPoint. I share my life, dreams and some of my plotting dilemmas with my husband. I share my lap and home office furniture with my cat, Max, who is my constant companion and, sometimes, distraction.

I’m a winner of two RWA chapter contests and a Daphne finalist. My work has appeared in Orange Coast magazine, The Family Digest and Purpose.

  6. We totally played spy as kids as well. we had our own spy kits with binoculars and a note pad. I love that that childhood love inspired you to write a novel as an adult

    1. Hi MomJane, I love a good spy story! Esp. when mixed with romance (swoon!!)I really tried to put in many twists & turns, but not TOO many so readers (and I) wouldn't get confused:)

I'm always curious - how do you get past a writer's block?

    1. Hi, There are many "tricks" for the dreaded writer's block. Like write a favorite scene (that may be out of order) or write a short story that has nothing to do with the book. Or, figure out what might be causing the block (sticky plot? dead end plot? unclear character motivation?) and brainstorm with fellow writers different ideas/ways through. Sometimes, a break may be needed, but it's important not to stay away from the page too long, because, like any practice, it's harder to return to it if you stay away too long. Thanks for asking! How do you do it?

  12. I always check out Rambling from this Chick to see the reviews. I have never read a spy story, but the excerpt hooked me. This might just be a genre I have neglected. Looking forward to reading this book.
