A party . . . somewhere in NYC . . .

I had no one to kiss at midnight.

This wasn’t a big surprise or anything. No boyfriend on the horizon for the last six months. No booty call since I decided to ban all men from my life since Simon was the cheating dickhead who broke my heart and took the brand new TV when he moved out.

I miss that TV. Simon . . . not at all. He was a turd and I wasted far too much time on him.

But it would be nice to have someone to kiss at midnight. As it is, I’m planning the best exit to slink out of when the ball drops and all my girlfriends let their dates put their tongues down their throat. I say that with all the envy in my heart. True story.

I wish I’d put on my granny panties and asked Aaron to go to this party with me. Four months of working on the rollout of the new branding campaign with Oliver Tindall had moved him from the category of “cute but nerdy” to “climb into his lap, take his glasses off and kiss him silly”. But no . . . all I did was shove a ticket at him at the office holiday party with a mumbled “a bunch of us are going and you can join us” invitation.

A shitty invitation. He’d gone to visit his Gran in Vermont and never responded. And now I was here by myself with sixty seconds left on the clock.
Time. To. Go.

I slithered past my crowd of friends, nodding and smiling when they looked my way, raising half-empty glasses and bouncing with the excitement of the evening. Luckily nobody tried to stop me and I cleared the edge of the crowd just as the frenzy ramped up and the clock clicked over to the thirty second mark.

The hallway leading to the exit was darker than the dance floor and I headed straight for the shadows, hoping that the cooler air would also relieve the heat of disappointment on my cheeks. Next year would be better. I would be more decisive and go after what I want . . . who I want. New year, new me.

Ten! Nine! Eight!

I bee-lined for the stairs, dodging couples trying to get the main party before the witching hour. I was like those fish that struggle against the current to achieve their goal.

Seven! Six! Five! Four!

My dad always said to begin the year the way you intended to go on. I planned on doing just that.

Three! Two! One!

The arm that looped around my waist was warm and strong, the body hard against mine as someone claimed my mouth for a kiss. I didn’t struggle at first, too surprised to anything but allow it to happen. To enjoy it. My mystery kisser was good, so good at it and I opened my mouth when his tongue pressed inside. Warm, wet, sensuous and seeking. His light stubble rasped against my skin, his taste was spicy and addictive. I wrapped my arms around my partner’s neck and stood up on tiptoe to make up for the difference in our heights.

Jostling bodies broke us apart and I opened my eyes, almost afraid to break the moment and face what I’d done. So desperate to kiss a stranger at midnight. Hopefully it was a handsome one.

It was. Sexy and hot. I really loved those glasses.

“Happy New Year, Eleanor,” Oliver said, his deep rumble full of humor and something definitely naughty. “I made it just in time.”

This is definitely how I wanted to begin.

“Yes, you did.”

Dr. Carla Androghetti is not interested in compromise.

With a thriving psychiatry practice in Washington, D.C. and a fulfilling position as a sexual third in a threesome with couples at Club D, she's living just the way she wants. When the murder of a famous former bedmate brings a sexy, tempting cop into her life, she indulges in an affair as sizzling as it is dangerous. Finding a man who can love her and accept her kink is a dream she’d given up a long time ago.

Homicide Detective Aiden Cross takes no prisoners.

Usually nothing can distract him from a case, but a sexy shrink with an unusual kink has him losing his laser-focus on the job. He’s been burned before by a cheating ex-wife and he doesn’t share, so why does he keep finding himself in the bed of a woman who breaks all his rules?

Passion will force them to take a risk.

When forbidden desire takes them to the edge of their personal limits, their walls will need to crumble if they have any chance together.
