My Book Boyfriend? Boyfriend implies one. And while I'm totally faithful in real life - in my reading life - I like A LOT of boyfriends. If we were talking about television - this would be fairly easy. I'm watching The West Wing from the beginning and I'll take one of all of those men. Josh, Sam, Toby , Charlie. Those guys are serious boyfriend material with their brains and hearts. Though their schedules are awful, so I might have to rethink that.

But we are talking about books and it's IMPOSSIBLE to decide.

At first, I thought I would write about my original literary boyfriend - Alonzo Wilder from The Little House on The Prairie books. Capable, handsome, good with animals and BONUS! often carried warm apple pie in his pocket - that's a great boyfriend. But all the romance between Alonzo and Laura was entirely in my head. Not so much as a stolen kiss between them. And I want my boyfriends to steal kisses.

So, I started thinking about my favorite romances and the heroes I love in those. And the truth is, what is often so compelling about heroes in the books I love is their wide-scale damage. Zsadist in the Black Dagger Brotherhood books - I love him. Like whoa, I love him. But I don't want to date him. I don't really want to know him. He's terrifying and damaged. Not much fun and so much work. I want my boyfriends to steal kisses and be fun. I'm really picky.

When my book boyfriend and I argue I want to be treated like an equal, but when push comes to shove I want that boyfriend to be ready to go to war on my behalf.

As luck would have it, I was re-reading Meredith Duran's fantastic At Your Pleasure and Adrian Ferrers just leaps off the page for me. Yes, he tortures her during an interrogation. Yes, there are terrible misunderstandings, but when all is revealed, he holds her hand and asks how he can atone. He flirts. He steals kisses. And then he does everything in his power to keep her safe.

At the moment - Adrian is my boyfriend. Ask me tomorrow and it will probably change. That's the fun of Book Boyfriends, they don't get jealous or peeved. They wait quietly on my Keeper Shelf to be re-read.

By candlelight she lures him...

Glittering court socialites and underworld cutpurses alike know that Adrian Ferrers, Earl of Rivenham, is the most dangerous man in London. Rivenham will let nothing—not the deepening shadow of war, nor the growing darkness within him—interfere with his ambition to restore his family to its former glory. But when tasked by the king to uncover a traitor, he discovers instead a conspiracy—and a woman whose courage awakens terrible temptations. To save her is to risk everything. To love her might cost his life.

At swordpoint she defies him...

Lady Leonora knows that Rivenham is the devil in beautiful disguise— and that the irresistible tension between them is as unpredictable as the dilemma in which Nora finds herself: held hostage on her own estate by Rivenham and the king's men. But when war breaks out, Nora has no choice but to place her trust in her dearest enemy—and pray that love does not become the weapon that destroys them both.

It’s his only chance to get near Maddy again, and to fight for the right things this time around. He believes in the fire in Maddy’s whiskey eyes and the passion that ignites the air between them. Ha! I'll bet my laundry mountain can top yours any day of the week--I'm pretty sure you can see the shadow of it across the border...just look towards Buffalo and you'll surely see it!

I loved Crazy Thing Called love, but don't think I've read anything by Meredith Duran. Thanks for the rec!

I have not read either of these books. I have my favorite book boyfriends and they tend to be alpha males. I love the guys in the BDB, Vlad and Bones from Night Huntress, and my new favorite Jericho Barrons

I see book boyfriends as love the one you're with. Enjoyed your reading at Lady Jane's Salon in February!

I have never read either of these books. However you had me at hockey! i absolutely love heroes who are sports players. Especially hockey! How did you decide to make him a hockey player? Are you a hockey fan?

Molly O'Keefe said...

Hey Miki - fingers crossed for you to win a copy of the book! As for your question, I made two of the Crooked Creek heroes hockey players because I'm intrigued by how the game is changing. Luc in Can't Buy Me Love suffers from a career ending concussion and Billy is a fighter on a team that doesn't value fighting.

Sounds like a great book, can't wait to read.

Is that what's over there!! Oh, if you haven't read Meredith you are missing out on an AMAZING author!! And so glad that you enjoyed CTCL

JERICHO BARRONS!!! how could I forget him? Too many boyfriends too little time...

Hey Casey! I am a fan (not a huge one, but I like watching it) - in fact the Leafs just made the playoffs last night for the first time in nine years.

I love your books. The characters really come to life as I am reading the pages. Thank you for all the stories.

Awww Molly I love you blog... I too have a huge list of book boyfriends. I am drawn to the mysterious and the damaged...for whatever reason I just love those characters. I can honestly say I love all the brothers in the brotherhood but have a few favorites, I love the anita's guys, there has been rarely a book on my keeper shelf that I am not thoroughly attached to one of the men in the book. I love the stories you weave and Thank you for sharing such an uplifting blog.

Ashlea said...

Have you considered writing historicals? If you did, what era would you want to try first?

Unknown said...

I feel the same way about Zhadist, I don't want to date him, I want to bake him cookies. As for real boyfriends, they have to be a bit more optimistic and fun. I'm also a fan of Bones, who can be quite a hoot. As far as historical heroes, Catherine Coulter's men always had a sense of humor, for the most part.

I have so many Book boyfriends that I like it would be hard to choose them.. I have will have to admit to Monica McCarty's Highland Guard series as being some great alpha guys to have in your corner.. Your hockey players are super guys too.. would not mind dating one of them.. WOW...

I have always wanted to read Crazy Thing Called Love so I am so excited about his contest. I have too many book boyfriends but my favorites are still Rourke from J.D. Robb's Eve Dallas series and Reyes from Darynda Jones' Charley Davidson series.

I totally agree Molly. I loved Zsadist but I don't want him as a boyfriend. He's way to scary.

I'm with you Molly, I couldn't name just one. Too much deliciousness around.

Kayla W. said...

OMG, I'm the same way! I could never name just one book boyfriend. It depends on the mood (and half the time it's the last hero from the last book i read lol). There are just too many.

Thanks for the opportunity!

Back in the 1970's, I babysat for a doctor and his wife. They were going to be gone for several days at a medical conference and I was staying with their twin girls elementary age] and 2 middle school aged boys. I had hoped to catch up the laundry... I devoted myself to it all day... I NEVER GOT IT ALL DONE!!! Good luck in finding a laundry fairy godmother

I loved Can't Buy Me love and Crazy Thing Called Love. I have Can't Hurry Love as the next book on the top of the pile. I love rugged men. You've got Luke who is a country boy and a hockey player and Billy, a scrumptious man looking for redemption. It's hard not to love them!

Linda said...

I laughed when I read your comment about wanting your boyfriends to steal kisses - heartily agreeing with you & definitely more than just kisses!

Thanks for the fun post and congrats to Molly on the new release! LOL... I'm the same when it come to book "boyfriends"... I'm kinda easy... throw a good looking, strong, intelligent, snarky guy whether he be titled, fanged, furred, alien, mutant or supernatural and I'm all a'swoony. I think of it as my book "harem" :)

My book boyfriend would hands-down be Jamie Fraser from Outlander. Huge, loyal, handsome, honest, trustworthy, brave (the list goes on and on!)

My all time favorite is Rhett Butler, but I must admit I'm fickle. I fall in love with each hero as I read their book.

Both of these books sound great.
