Interview with Author Jessica Scott and Giveaway

Today I would like to welcome author Jessica Scott to RFTC. Jessica is celebrating the recently released Anything For You and has stopped by to answer a few questions. Please give Jessica a warm welcome.

Jessica Scott is a career army officer, mother of two daughters, three cats and three dogs, wife to a career NCO and wrangler of all things stuffed and fluffy. She is a terrible cook and even worse housekeeper, but she's a pretty good shot with her assigned weapon and someone liked some of the stuff she wrote. Somehow, her children are pretty well adjusted and her husband still loves her, despite burned water and a messy house.

Oprah has called her. True story.

Her debut novel BECAUSE OF YOU launched Loveswept, the first Random House digital imprint.

She's written for the New York Times At War Blog, PBS Point of View Regarding War, and IAVA. She deployed to Iraq in 2009 as part of OIF/New Dawn and is currently a company commander stationed at Fort Hood.

Most recently, she's been featured as one of Esquire Magazine's Americans of the Year for 2012.

Places to find Jessica:

First off, can you tell us a bit about you?
I'm a grade a hamster wrangler, mom, army officer. Oh and I try to write coherent sentences.

Did you always want to be a writer?
I don't think I've always wanted to be a writer but I knew the moment when I became a writer. Back in officer candidate school, I started writing and I just never stopped.

What kind of writer are you? Panster or Plotter?
I'm more of a figure out the plot girl now then I was when I first started out. If I don't plot, I find I get stuck and do massive amounts of deleting.

Where do your ideas come from?
Everywhere. I think writers are connected more closely to the collective unconscious and we just listen to the universe a little bit more closely.

A la Twitter style, can you describe your book (or series) in 140 characters or less.
Coming home from war is just the beginning.

What are some of your favorite kinds of stories to read?
I love a story that makes me care. If a book makes me cry, it's a winner!

Do you have a favorite book and if so what is it?
Oh I have several favorites! One of my all time favorites though is Nalini Singh's Archangel's Blade. It's a great love story. And Ruthie Knox's How to Misbehave is a fantastic novella that hits all the right notes for me: fun, sexy and tortured hero.

What are the scenes that are the hardest for you to write?
The dark moments really take it out of me. I figure if I don't care about writing it, the readers won't care about it so I have to make sure they hurt me, if that makes sense.

If you could have dinner with any three authors, who would you choose and why?
Anne McCaffrey because she's an author who has inspired me for a very long time, Chuck Wendig because he seems like he's really funny and Stephen King because he seems pretty interesting and down to earth.

Last question, are you working on anything right now?
It's a sekret:) But I can tell you that Laura & Trent's story and Reza's story are both in the works!

What's your favorite tortured hero? I love a good tortured hero and am always on the look out for a great story!

From the author of Because of You comes an all new Coming Home short story.

Sergeant First Class Shane Garrison has spent a year recovering from his combat injuries. A year spent in the arms of the woman of his dreams. But loving Jen comes with a price: every time he touches her, he faces the uncertain fear that loving her might mean losing her forever.

Jen is a breast cancer survivor and with Shane, she's found a man who loves her despite her scars. But her scars may be too much for their love to survive.

As their love grows, so does the risk to Jen's life. And Shane must make the toughest decision any man can make to save the woman he loves.

  5. I love tortured heroes. They feel that they do not deserve love and caring, but they are the ones that need it the most. The veteran heroes are the ones that I love the most. They feel because the killed or hurt others during their tour that they are undeserving of love.
One that I really love is Laura Kaye's Hero series with Brady and Marco.
    Thanks for the awesome giveaway.

  10. If you REALLY want a tortured hero, read The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant by Stephen R Donaldson. Old series--six books. Awesome story and deeply flawed man.
