Christmas Shopping with Zander and Erin of WANT IT

Dani, hello—and Merry Christmas! In keeping with the holiday spirit, I’ve created a special scene just for you and your readers. =)

In Want It, opposites certainly attract (when they’re not completely fed up with each other). Army Ranger Zander James is all go-go-go, while artist Erin Connelly likes to take the time to enjoy the more beautiful things in life. But when the two of them were tasked with finding a Christmas present for Zander’s niece, this was one operation doomed for failure.

---

Zander pushed into the toy store, shielding his eyes against the over-bright lights. “Who the hell pays the electricity bill in this place, anyway,” he groused, squinting at the brilliantly-lit train display next to yards of flashing pink and green Christmas trees.

“They want you in the Christmas spirit,” Erin said. She pulled her list out of her bag as Zander glanced around dubiously.

“They want your kids hyped up like crack addicts in Candy Land more like it.” He picked up a stuffed unicorn, brandishing it at Erin. “No on this, by the way.”

She laughed. “Fortunately, I’m not relying on you to play Santa. Karen will kill me if I bring home a plastic assault rifle for her two-year-old girl.”

“C’mon!” Zander protested. “What about Caleb? I’d be his favorite uncle for life.”

“You’re already his favorite uncle for life.” They turned into an aisle that was an explosion of pink and glitter, and Zander skidded to a stop. “You’ve got to be kidding me,” he growled, immediately tensing up.

Erin slipped the list back in her purse, then took Zander by the hand. “Man up, soldier,” she said, her voice low. “You can do this.”

“What is this shit?” He barely breathed as he took one step, then another down the aisle. He stopped to stare at a collection of dolls. “Barbie Life in the Beach House? Is this for real?”

“Keep moving,” Erin said, immediately seeing what was next in the aisle. She grabbed Zander’s arm to move him along, but it was too late.

“Oh, hell no,” he said, reaching out and plucking up a plastic case. “This is what little girls think is hot? This Ken dude in shorts and a striped hoodie? Are you joking me?”

“This is for girls three and up, Zander,” Erin said severely. “’Hot’ is definitely a subjective consideration for that age range.”

“Yeah? And what about this?” Erin looked over to where he jabbed a finger at another brightly packaged Barbie set. It showed Ken and Barbie in full wedding regalia, with their hands joined in the plastic. “Looks like Barbie gets her man in the end. Is that the message we’re trying to send to three-year-old girls?”

“Hey, a lot of little girls think getting married is awesome. And you can’t deny the dress is absolutely fabulous.” She grinned up at him, but stopped as she met his gaze. Zander’s face had changed slightly, his jaw going a little harder, his eyes a little more intense.

“What about you, Erin?” he murmured, reaching out to brush an errant lock back behind her ear. The move was so unconscious, so thoroughly ingrained between them—and yet so strange and new after four years of them being apart—that it made Erin catch her breath. But Zander wasn’t finished. “Seems to me you once thought getting married would be awesome, too. Did that all change in the last four years, too?”

Erin suddenly found it difficult to breathe, all the tulle and glitter and bright pink plastic pressing in on her from all sides. But Zander stood in front of her, solid and sure. He wasn’t going to let her get out of this one, and something inside her twisted a little at the expression in his eyes. What answer did he want her to give?

“I think it would still be awesome,” she said, her voice a little breathier than she wanted. “If you find the right person, or the right person finds you.”

He raised a slow brow, no doubt seeing the blush crawl up her cheek. “You mean like ‘Life in the Beach House Ken’?” he asked, and somehow he was even closer now, crowding her up against the side of the aisle. “Is that who you want to spend the rest of your life with, Erin?”

He leaned down, brushing his lips over hers with soft, suggestive promise. “Because I think I might have a better idea,” he whispered.

Whew! I think I’d like to go Christmas shopping with Zander after all! Thank you for such a fun blog idea, and for hosting me today! (And if you celebrate Christmas, here’s hoping you found something magical under the tree today!)

In the latest tantalizing Rule Breakers novel from Jennifer Chance, an irresistible alpha male follows his ex into a deadly standoff—and reignites a heated affair.

For Erin Connelly, being a good girl isn’t such a bad thing. She’s working her dream job at a Boston art gallery and staying out of trouble, which is more than she can say for her deadbeat mom. Unfortunately, her mother’s latest misadventure lands her in the clutches of a Mexican drug lord. Now the only person who can save her is the one man Erin has no business asking for help: the sexy-as-sin army ranger who just so happens to be her former high school sweetheart.

Zander James is no gentleman—and no officer, either, thanks to Erin. Four years ago, she made a call that terminated his highest aspirations . . . and their relationship. He’s never forgiven her, but when he learns that Erin’s embarking on a half-baked rescue mission, he sure as hell can’t let her go alone. Now, with a treacherous enemy lying in wait, the electrifying tension between them may just be Zander’s undoing. Because while he may be able to keep Erin alive, he can’t promise to keep his hands off her.
