Interview with Author Keri Arthur and Giveaway

Meet Keri Arthur author of Flameout.

Keri Arthur author of the New York Times bestselling Riley Jenson Guardian series, has now written more than twenty-eight novels. She’s received several nominations in the Best Contemporary Paranormal category of the Romantic Times Reviewers Choice Awards and has won RT’s Career Achievement Award for urban fantasy. She lives with her daughter in Melbourne, Australia.

First off, can you tell us a bit about you?
Well, I used to work as a chef (I love cooking, but hated the long hours that cheffing involved) but quit in 2006 to write full time. I have a daughter and two old dogs, and live in country Victoria (Australia). And I really do have kangaroos in my back yard (as well as rabbits and the odd echidna)

Did you always want to be a writer?
I’ve always told stories, but I didn’t start writing until I was around 12. A character I loved was killed off in a book I was reading, so I sat down and rewrote the entire book to ensure the character survived.  It wasn’t until my daughter was born that I got serious about my writing and started submitting.

What kind of writer are you? Panser or Plotter?
I’m a pantser who plots . It’s part of my contractual obligations that I hand in a synopsis about 4 or 5 months before the book is due, so that marketing and the art departement can get things moving their end. Generally, I’ve only just started the story at that stage, so I do a very rough outline of where I think the book is headed. Sometime the story follows the outline, sometimes it only vagually resembles it.

Where do your ideas come from?
This is one of those questions that many authors hate, because there’s no definitive answer to it. They can come from something you see, something you read, something you overhear, a dream, asking what if...the list goes on.

A la Twitter style, can you describe your book (or series) in 140 characters or less.
Oh dear, I’m horrible at these things...
As the stakes rise and the virus takes hold, Emblery finds herself in a race to find missing witches and smoke out the vampire threatening everyone she cares about...

What are some of your favorite kinds of stories to read?
When I’m not writing, my go-to genre is generally Regency Romances, simply because they’re totally different to anything I write (and I’m a sucker for a good romance story). But I also read horror, fantasy, action novels, even non fiction books on health and fitness...depends on my mood.

Do you have a favorite book and if so what is it?
I don’t really have favourite books as much as favourite authors--Dick Francis, James Herbert, Eloisa James, Anne Gracie, Julia Quinn, Tolkien, Ann McCaffrey ... (to name just a few)

What are the scenes that are the hardest for you to write? Why?
To be honest, the sex scenes are the hardest, especially when you’re dealing with a continuing series. I have major, major respect for JD Robb (Nora Roberts) for being able to make the scenes between Eve and Roake so damn hot even after 41--or is it 42?--books!

If you could have dinner with any three authors, who would you choose and why?
Dick Francis, because he was so damn great at building characters and situations, Terry Pratchett because even though I haven’t yet read a lot of his books, he sounded like an amazing man, and Nora Roberts, because wow, her output! I’d love to mine her mind and uncover how she does it.

Last question, are you working on anything right now?
I’m currently working on The Black Tide, which is the 3rd book in my Outcast series, as well as a brand new series that hasn’t yet got a publisher. I’ve also outlined the 5th book in the Souls of Fire series, and I’m about to hand in the 4th.

I’ve written about vampires, werewolves, dhampires, dragons, and now a phoenix. What creatures are your favourite to read about, and what mythical creature would you like to see more of in novels?

Emberly and her red hot partner, Jackson, have hit an impasse in their battle against the crazed humans infected by a plague-like virus derived from vampire blood. Their quest to unearth the leader of the group leads them into an ambush—and leaves Emberly at odds with her former lover, Sam, who’s pressuring her to join his Paranormal Investigations Team.

To make matters worse, three local witches have been kidnapped—and if their spells fall into the wrong hands, Emberly’s powers could end up smothered. With time ticking until the virus consumes the world, Emberly and Jackson must race to save the witches, find a cure, and smoke out their nemesis—or go down in a blaze of glory.
