Audiobook Review: Straddling the Line by Jaci Burton, Narrated by Lucy Malone

It’s been awhile since I’ve read Jaci Burton and I always loved her books so I was glad to get back to her. This is part of her Play by Play series and though it’s book #8, I had no problem with reading it out-of-order. Each book is stand-alone however some of the characters from previous books are in this one. But since it’s romance and you know each book has a happy ending, the couples getting together is no surprise to be ruined and I don’t remember that any other storyline was ruined either so kudos to Ms. Burton for making this a true standalone that is also fun for readers of the series to see couples from earlier books.

Haven just can’t get it together at her dream job as a network sportscaster so unknowingly her Mom talks to Trevor Shay and convinces him to let Haven have the exclusive interview on him that is very sought after and he has managed to avoid. There is nothing he wouldn’t do for the wife of one of his mentor’s so he agrees and Haven takes the job. What a hardship, living with a major football and baseball player, getting a glimpse into his world, especially when she crushed hard on Trevor when she was his tutor in college. I like the connecting link in this series. Originally it was about the Riley siblings, but it has branched out to other guys who went to college together and were taken care of by Haven’s parents. A very interesting concept and it worked very well to start this book off.

Of course the sexual chemistry between the two is off the charts, Haven is quite different from what Trevor remembers, but then again he was less on studying and more on playing ball back in college. So it’s hard for him to keep his hands off of her, and of course she has the same problem since she has also had a crush on him for awhile. But what I really liked is they were friends. They had an easy camaraderie that I think is just as important in a romance novel as the chemistry.

The book continues, and leaves you wondering if Haven can get it together and find her true passion and what is Trevor’s big secret, the one thing he’s not letting Haven know. And can a man who is devoted to two sports commit to a woman and make a relationship work? These are the dilemmas of the book. Add in some great chemistry, fun characters from previous books and hot sex scenes and this book will make you melt in many ways. There are hot moments, sweet moments and moments you want to kill both Haven and Trevor, but in the end you fall in love with both of them and the friends that surround them.

If you haven’t picked up a book in the Play by Play series, you simply must do it now. I loved Haven and Trevor’s story, can’t wait to read more of the previous stories and I’m excited about future stories as well. I listened to this on audio courtesy of Tantor audio and the audio version was very well done. It kept me engaged, the narrator used different voices for the different characters and it was easy to keep up with the characters and the story. I highly recommend the audio version of this book, just not with kids in the car ;)

ARC Review: Make It Right by Megan Erickson

Make it Right is a really cute story. I think it was classified as New Adult and I can see it that way because it deals with people in college but it was a lot less angsty than other New Adult novels I have read, so if you are looking for something in the younger age group but that is different from all the other New Adults out there, Make It Right is for you.

Lea and Max are like oil and water. Everytime he is near her he seems to insult her, ignore her or make fun of her. Somehow it just never works out when they are together. But Max does like her and he hates that he can’t seem to get the right words out around her, he never has any problems with any other girls he meets. Lea was involved in an accident in her teen years and it has left her scarred and she walks with a limp. Because of this she likes to be in control and being around Max makes her feel like she has less control. So of course they end up thrown together teaching a self-defense class because of a rash of robberies on campus that has hit too close to home for Lea. While teaching together they start to gel better and Lea sees redeeming qualities in Max where she didn’t see them before. Max starts feeling protective of Lea but not in a “you are a helpless female way” but in a supportive wonderful way.

At this point the chemistry explodes off the pages. You knew it was there before with their bickering but when they start to get along it comes through more fully. I enjoyed watching their relationship develop. I also enjoyed seeing Kat and Alec from the first book in this book and I can’t wait to go back and read Make It Count.
The storyline was intriguing with the robberies thrown in as a way to get Max and Lea together. I also loved the relationship aspect. Of course there is a conflict and I felt that was a great addition to the story. And all-in-all I enjoyed reading this book. It’s more light and fun than most New Adults, but there are some histories that must be dealt with and some angst included, but overall it felt a lot lighter than most books in this genre which is nice.

If you are looking for a fun and serious mixed together with an interesting romance then Make It Right is just for you. And though it is the second book in the Bowler University series, it can be read as a stand-alone. Alec and Kat from Make It Count are in the book, but down deep these are romances, so the fact that they get together is not a surprise. I think this is a great series and I will be reading the first book soon and the third book when it comes out.

Audiobook Review: In Your Corner by Sarah Castille, Narrated by Lucy Rivers

Oh. My. Gosh. This book was simply amazing. Not only was it my first exposure to Sarah Castille, but it was also my first exposure to a book that has MMA as part of the plot. It won’t be my last by Ms. Castille and I will definitely be seeking out more books featuring MMA. Please use the comments if you have some to recommend to me.

So what did I love? Everything. No really. First there is Amanda, she’s a lawyer trying to live up to what her parents expect. She’s on the partner track at the law firm, yet by night she’s a lot less uptight. She’s trying to get over one of the best things that ever happened to her, Jake, but she couldn’t commit to him so she ended it. Now she seeks out other men at night, and not the type her parents would approve of. She’s safe but she likes sex. All is going well until the main firm partner shows her the information the firm PI has on her extracurriculars and then propositions her as a form of blackmail. At this point Amanda has had enough. Oh and if the proposition wasn’t enough, the same day, Jake walks back into her life all cleaned up in a business suit at her law firm.

From there things go downhill until Jake and the men from Redemption step back into her life. This time however Jake is trying to keep his distance. He’s not that involved with MMA anymore while trying to run the family business. He also still has feelings for Amanda but he knows she won’t commit and he won’t be hurt again, so he’s trying hard not to act on his feelings until he knows how Amanda feels about him.

The sparks fly. And by sparks I mean raging hot flames. I swear I had to turn my AC higher while listening to this audio in the car. Amanda and Jake could just be in the same room and the heat would radiate through the reader of the book. A semi-relationship commences, the two dance around each other and Amanda begins her own law firm. There are a lot of bumps in her life and in their relationship but that made the book interesting. I loved the characters. Makayla and Torment are in this one (they were the couple in the first book) and I liked the look at them and can’t wait to go back and read their story. I also loved Amanda’s British office manager/receptionist, she was a lot of fun, the PI who follows her from the large law firm to her small one and the guys at Redemption. I especially loved Fuzzy and can’t wait to get his story.

The storyline is great, never a dull moment. The characters really came alive with this reader. I never questioned who was who when she was doing the reading, each character came alive through her voice. Amanda and Jake are simply amazing. I loved their story and how they overcome what needs to be overcome to get together. It’s not an easy relationship, but they both find it is very worth it to pursue. And the heat, definitely a fall/winter read because it is hot, hot, hot! But in a good way. For those of you that don’t like too much sex, it never seemed gratuitous, it was there for a reason in the book. I never felt like Ms. Castille wrote a sex scene just to have another sex scene which is great.

I can’t find a fault with this one, it was amazing on audio. The plot kept me interested and excited to get into the car next. The characters seemed so real that I felt like they were my friends and the world they were living in seemed like it was right around the corner. I’m ready for a Redemption gym nearby. And yes this is part of a series, but I had no problem with it as a stand-alone. But I will be going back and reading Against the Ropes and will eagerly look forward to Full Contact.

ARC Review: What I Love About You by Rachel Gibson

Rachel Gibson is a go-to author that I actually haven’t read in awhile. With all the books out there I find it hard to get to the authors I use to love. So I was glad to have a chance to get back to her. She writes small towns and humorous romance with the best of them and What I Love About You did not disappoint on either front.

First there is Blake. He’s an ex-SEAL and now a private military contractor who is battling his demons, alcohol and PTSD (though he swears he doesn’t have PTSD). He moves to Truly, Idaho to get away from it all and see if he can put his life back together after rehab. What he doesn’t want is the lovely lady next door or her cute 5-year-old daughter. But you can’t always get what you want, but as the song says, “Sometimes you get what you need.” And that’s exactly what Blake gets.

Natalie is an independent single mother. Her ex-husband is in jail, and she has made something of her life since that horrible day years ago when she found out about her husband’s betrayal. Now she has a great business, a hysterical best friend Lilah and an adorable 5-year-old daughter, Charlotte. She doesn’t need or want a man in her life, especially the mysterious and grouchy next-door neighbor Blake. But then he becomes friends with her daughter, they end up sharing a dog, and how could she not notice how good-looking he is? So of course they do get involved.

I mean it wouldn’t be a romance if the two main characters didn’t get involved, right? Well that is my one problem with this book. Yes it’s fun, yes it’s fluffy and yes Charlotte “weally” steals the show. But the romance was kind of lacking. There is chemistry and it’s definitely steamy. But there just didn’t seem to be much romance. As far as character growth and development, this book is stellar. The humor is cute and placed perfectly. I felt the novel was well paced, but somehow I wanted a little more.

Do you ever feel like that, the book is great but something is just missing? That is how I felt with What I Love About You. I loved Natalie, Charlotte and even grumpy Blake. I love the ending and I enjoyed getting to know the characters, but I just needed more romance. But don’t let my review scare you, it really is a interesting and entertaining book and I look forward to reading the other Truly, Idaho books though this one is definitely a stand-alone.

ARC Review: A SEAL's Fantasy by Tawny Weber

It has been awhile since I read a category romance book, but something in the description pulled me in and I had to read this one. I loved Tawny Weber and use to read every book of hers that came out. Then the world was inundated with ebooks and there were so many to choose from that a lot of my old favorite authors (especially category authors) fell by the wayside. Well I’m glad this one was available on Netgalley because it reminded me of one of my old favorites and she did not disappoint. Of course when a book involves a Navy SEAL could it really disappoint?

Dominic Castillo has been sidelined from his team’s latest op by an injury that never should have happened so he’s home, attending family gatherings (a bachelor party) and just hanging around. He’s feeling sorry for himself and trying to figure out what he wants to do with his life though he can’t imagine life without the SEALs. But he knows something is missing. Then he gets the call that something has gone wrong on the latest op and he needs to secure the op leader’s sister so she can’t be kidnapped and used to foul up the op worse than it already is.

Lara Banks is “Sir’s” sister and while Sir is not one of Dominic’s favorite people, he will do anything for the team. So he checks her out then goes to convince her to come with him to a safe place. But Lara is not a trusting soul and she has a life in Reno, a job, school and a goal to get out of the situation she’s in which is dancing in the chorus line. It takes some convincing but eventually Lara comes around to Dominic’s way of thinking. And then the sparks fly. On the run from bad guys and both insanely attracted to each other, this book takes off from there and I won’t spoil it for you because it is one fun ride.

I liked Dominic from the very start. While I knew he was quite the ladies man, I also knew he really wasn’t the type of man who left broken hearts and bitter women in his wake. He knows how to treat women. And in my eyes that made him a good man. I also loved his devotion to his team. Even though he doesn’t really like his team leader, there is nothing he wouldn’t do to keep Sir and his team safe. Even if it means dealing with a spitfire like Lara who he is very attracted to. I enjoyed getting to know Lara as well. Several unfortunate things have derailed her life and usually have to do with men so she has all but written them off. She’s in control of her life and her destiny as much as she can be until Dominic steps into her life. From the start she can’t deny her attraction for him even though he is rather controlling and that is not at all what she is looking for in a man, nor is she really looking for any man.

While there is a little bit of a suspense plot, mainly in whether Dominic can keep Lara safe until the mission is back on track, A SEAL’s Fantasy is all about the romance. From the first spark of attraction to the magic of sex and falling in love, romance is the focus. While neither character is looking for love, they do find it, but will they ever acknowledge their feelings or will they just go their separate ways? That’s the fun of the book, while you know it will have a HEA, it’s the getting there that makes it and I could not put this one down. I had to know they would get there and how. And I was fascinated by the characters themselves, the SEALs and Dominic’s family. It all combined to make a wonderful story.

Looking for a sexy SEAL and a strong woman who knows what she wants? Want the strong temperaments to have to show a little vulnerability? Then this is just the book for you. From start to finish you will be cheering for Dominic and Lara and when it’s over you’ll be wanting to read about the other SEALs in this sexy series by Tawny Weber (while this one is a stand alone, there are other books that involve members of Dominic’s SEAL team). I’ve always loved Tawny Weber and A SEAL’s Fantasy proves that she is an amazing author. Time to play catch up on all those wonderful books I missed!

Review: Summer Temptation by Ashley Lynn Willis

Summer’s Temptation is just the book I needed to get out of another reading slump. With carefully crafted characters and a plot that kept me reading until I finished the book, it’s a book that enticed me, kept me captive and had me thinking of the characters after I finished it.

Cassie Faye knows Tyler Mason is bad news, at least on the boyfriend material front. His room is a revolving door for women and never the same one twice. But when Cassie’s friends convince her she needs a “hug buddy” to get over her ex-boyfriend, she begins looking at Tyler with different thoughts in mind. Tyler while not game for the idea at first, quickly comes around and the rest of the book is a look at the relationship that is not a relationship between Tyler and Cassie. And of course there is another possible man involved, but Cassie got involved with Tyler so she wouldn’t form any real relationships because she doesn’t want to be hurt again. But will she fall for Tyler and will he hurt her?

Summer’s Temptation was amazing. Even though it sounds kind of skanky with the whole “hug buddy” (Cassie’s friends words not mine) concept. It really becomes anything but. In fact it seems wholly plausible with the situation between Cassie who doesn’t want a relationship and Tyler who Cassie thinks is the same way. I loved watching Cassie come alive with Tyler. I loved seeing Tyler as less of a man-whore and more as a good man. It was intriguing to watch them grow together. And there is so much I didn’t see coming that made the book so hard to put down. I know New Adult is less predictable than the romance genre in general, but this one still had me guessing as to what would happen next more often than most books I read and that made me love it all the more.

With amazing characters who come to life on the page and a plot that is both enticing and believable, Summer’s Temptation was a true winner in a book. Add in some pretty hot sex and it’s a homerun. And even better, even with the premise the amount of sex is just right, there are some scorching scenes, some touching scenes but not too much. There is plenty of room for character development and plot with a nice side of sex. A perfect mix. So click quickly and get this book, it is one you don’t want to miss. And now I can hardly wait for the next installment, Autumn’s Fall, and I don’t think I can wait until next fall!

ARC Review: Tell Me Something Good by Jamie Wesley

When a psychologist who believes in love and helping those who need help meets an arrogant sportscaster who has every reason to not believe in love, you know the sparks are going to fly. Then make throw them together on one radio show because the sparks do fly and you never know what will happen. Will this psychologist make a cynical man believe in love or will they just walk away from each other?

Noelle and Tate do not like each other. She’s a psychologist and though she has a tough past she truly believes in love and truly wants to help each person who calls her radio show. Cynical Tate doesn’t believe in love and thinks Noelle is full of it. He just wants to do his sports show and go on with life, dating women but not making a commitment and he believes this is what all men want. So throw them together with a radio show and as I mentioned the sparks fly. On the first day a woman calls in with a relationship problem and Tate and Noelle end up very involved with this situation. Each devising dates for the couple that will test them to see if they want to stay together. The catch is Noele and Tate will go along. Also Tate thinks they will end the relationship and Noelle is betting they want. An on-air challenge that will lead to more than Tate and Noelle ever thought it could.

As with any good enemies to lovers stories, of course these two have great chemistry both on and off the air. Shortly into the planned dates, they both realize it as well. I enjoyed watching them fight it and then finally give in.

Of course down the line there is a deciding point. This is where the book gets tough, but I loved it. It’s not just a simple decision for either of them. Both have baggage they need to sort through and I loved watching both Tate and Noelle grow as they dealt with their pasts. The characters were amazing in this one and made this story a joy to read. I would love to meet a real Tate and Noelle, I loved them that much.

Tell Me Something Good tells an amazing story. I loved the angle of throwing them together on the radio show and then on the dates. This storyline really hit a home run for me. It’s not an easy story for Tate and Noelle, but it’s a great one and a wonderful book to put on your end-of-summer reading list.

ARC Review: Upside Down by Lia Riley

When you start this book be prepared to not want to put it down. At least I didn’t want to. I was drawn into it immediately. Talia and her story drew me right in and Bran also adds a lot to the story. Not to mention it takes place in Australia and I love a good book set in another country.

Talia’s life has been turned upside down with the death of her sister. She is barely keeping her head above water. Her Mom has left for Hawaii and her Dad is a shell of himself. And she can’t tell her parents the biggest secret of all, that she won’t be graduating in May. So on her supposed last semester of college she takes a semester transfer to a college in Australia. Maybe getting away from it all will help her deal with everything better, she can become someone else for awhile. Of course “fun Talia” meets a guy after being there a short time, and while she enjoys being with him, he just doesn’t catch her eye or really make a mark on her. However when she meets his friend Bran for the first time she can’t get him out of her mind. Bran is different and he has secrets of his own. Their attraction begins to grow and the book really takes off. But can both of them fight their demons and find love together, or will they both be stubborn and hard-headed and go their separate ways?

I liked Talia from the start. I know she has issues and it was interesting to learn about them little by little. And wow at one point you really understand why she has issues. Bran was also great. He’s different, he’s caring, but he’s not sure he’s ready to open his heart. Again you have to learn about him a little at a time. The buildup for both characters is well-paced and kept me reading just to find out more about them. I would say that while the romance is important in this book, I think the characters are more important. Learning about them, seeing them grow and change is really what this book is about. I have a feeling more of the romance will be explored in the second book.

The romance is important. They fight it at times while they try to decide what they both want and need. As the reader you know they need each other and they are well-suited to each other, but they have to figure it out themselves. I thought the book was well paced and the romance was interesting. I definitely could not wait to see how it turned out and the plot had me in knots at times. It’s definitely a book that will put your emotions through the wringer, but in a good way.

Upside Down was to me, simply amazing. It was a book I did not want to put down and now that it is over I cannot wait until the next book. It’s ending does bring a conclusion to this part of the series, so you aren’t left hanging, but there is more to come and I can’t wait to read it in Sideswiped which comes out in October. If you enjoy complex characters and New Adult Romance then run, don’t walk and get Upside Down when it comes out!

ARC Review: Before You by Amber Hart

A gritty story, yet a very interesting love story. I was drawn into Before You very easily. I wanted to get to know Faith, the real Faith and also Diego. The book delves into some interesting topics while engaging the reader with multi-faceted characters. While it is not one of my favorite books of the year, it is definitely one that is worth reading.

From the beginning, the reader understands that there are two sides to Faith. The one she puts on for the outside world and her family and the one that is true to herself. However she never really gets to be herself except with her best friend, Melissa who really knows her. Faith is the good girl, she dates the high school quarterback, she wears tasteful clothes. And everyone thinks she went on a mission trip her junior year. But only Faith and Melissa know the truth. Her live is thrown for a loop the first day of senior year when in walks Diego Alvarez. Diego is a boy who has just moved to the area from Cuba. A boy that couldn’t be more different from Faith. He’s covered with tattoos, but yet he’s mannerly, he’s tough but gentle. Faith is assigned to be his peer mentor for the first few days to help acclimate him to the school. Thing is, he doesn’t want her around or does he? Faith will do her job but she finds herself strangely attracted to something about Diego and that attraction has her wanting to break out of her box.

The characters are fascinating in this book. Faith on the surface is the very prim and proper uptight popular girl, but things come out through the book that show she has a different side. Diego has come from Cuba and was once involved in things he shouldn’t have been, but it was the only way to survive. So he and his father have come to America to start a new life. But Diego is unsure about this new life, feels out-of-place and even more out-of-place as his attraction to Faith grows.

The majority of the book deals with the background of the two main characters and their close friends and family. It also deals with the forbidden romance aspect of Faith being an upper/middle class white girl in this Florida town and Diego being a Cuban with a questionable background. There are of course bigots and there is fear of the relationship on both sides. But as time passes both find that though it is hard, it isn’t as hard as they thought or at least the difficulties might be worth it if they have found true love together.

A lot of issues are dealt with or at least brought up in Before You and it fascinated me. First and foremost there was the interracial relationship issue. Every area is different so I understand that this is a topic that some people feel strongly about, while in my area it doesn’t seem to be a big deal. Another issue that is just touched on is strictness of a church over stupid things. Faith’s father is a pastor and there are some issues in their church that bother Faith. I loved the fact that they bothered her father as well. This issue I could relate well with. How sometimes a congregation can call the shots too much and really turn others off to a church. And finally there is the issue of being a teenager and trying to be two different people. One to please your parents and other adults and one that is more true to yourself (especially when it is one that really does no harm to yourself or to others). What teenager or even an adult can’t relate to that one? I felt the issues were handled great and interwoven so well into the story that the reader wouldn’t feel like they were being shoved in their face. The issues were left mostly open-ended so the reader could make their own decision, yet the author made her points gently and well.

With an interesting love story, characters that grew and changed through the book, issues to be worked out and even some action and suspense, I found Before You to be a quick and thought-provoking read. It is definitely a book that will stick with you for some time leaving you thinking about the issues and the characters long after you finish itl. I can’t wait to see more of Faith and Diego in the follow-up book, After Us, which will emphasize the relationship of a different couple introduced in this book and should be another enthralling read.

ARC Review: The Hexed by Heather Graham

I haven’t read anything by Heather Graham in long time. I use to read anything she wrote. After I started The Hexed I realized what I had been missing. The Hexed is actually the 13th book in the Krewe of Hunters series. But it works great as a stand-alone novel. However I now want to go back and read all the other novels in the series. I was that drawn into the book and this group of people.

The story focuses on the investigation of murders taking place in the present time (and one 13 years earlier). But along with the investigation is the fact that the story takes place in the towns that surround and make up the Salem, Massachusetts area. Local lore and The Salem Witch Trials play a prominent role. The book focuses on three groups who surround the main characters, Rocky and Devin. The first group is the teenagers/now adults who found the body of their friend 13 years earlier, one of which is Rocky. The second group is Devin and her friends, all but one she knew in high school. The third group is the Krewe of Hunters. They are a special division of the FBI which Rocky has just joined. They use their paranormal abilities to help solve cases that are difficult to solve. Rocky specifically joins the group when a second murder happens that mimics his friend’s death. Since Rocky can see and talk to ghosts he is a perfect fit for the Krewe. Both Rocky and Devin have just recently returned the Salem area where they both grew up (in different towns).

After a Prologue and some information to set the stage, the story begins as Devin runs into Rocky’s path one night (literally) after finding a murder victim near her home. It steamrolls from there, going down the path of the investigation and the start of a budding romance and keeps going until threading history in with the investigation until finally everything comes to light. I would say this is suspense with romantic elements. Some books balance it, and some lean more one way or the other, this leans heavier towards suspense, but it is all woven together so well I think most everyone who loves romantic suspense will love this one.

I loved getting to know the all the characters, but Rocky and Devin especially. He’s a FBI agent which was his goal in life especially after the murder of his close friend. He’s pragmatic, he’s a stellar FBI agent, he’s caring and he sees ghosts which makes him a very interesting character. Devin is a children’s book author who has returned to the Salem area as well to live in her Aunt’s house. Devin is practical as well. She cares for her friends and seems to care for people in general as well. I love Devin and Rocky together, they have a truly believable attraction. Together they are a force to be reckoned with when it comes to solving the crime spree around the Salem area and all while developing an promising romance. Devin’s deceased Aunt Mina who appears to Devin in ghost form also a captivating character. She is fun, loving and a great addition to all the other characters in the book. The Krewe members that come to town were interesting and I can’t wait to go back and read some of their stories or read them in the future. Devin and Rocky’s friends from the area who were involved every step of the way led to a great camaraderie feel in the book.

I loved the setting. Salem is a fascinating spot with a lot of history and I loved learning more about the Salem Witch Trials through this book. I thought the plot was well done and it kept me engaged through the whole book. It also kept me guessing the whole time. I did not know who the killer was until that person was revealed. The plotting was perfect. Between the relationship developing between Devin and Rocky, the inner workings of an investigation, the history of the Salem area, the paranormal aspect of seeing and talking to ghosts, and getting to know the other characters in the book, I was enthralled.

There is a lot going on in The Hexed but not too much to make it hard to follow. I fell right into reading this at a time I was in a reading slump. I fell in love with all of the characters, they were interesting and each one was a great addition to the story. I fell in love with the setting of the Salem area. I was mesmerized by the suspense plot. With the addition of the paranormal element, it was an amazing book for me. Heather Graham can write an fascinating story that will stay with you and leave you thinking.
