Review: Straight Up Love by Lexi Ryan

Straight Up Love is the second book in the Boys of Jackson Harbor Series by Lexi Ryan, and while I haven’t read the first book in the series, this story is easily read as a standalone. The books are interconnected though, so if you have read the first book you will see familiar faces here. There was a lot to like here, and yet in the end I had mixed feelings on the story overall. While I have enjoyed a lot of Lexi Ryan’s books in the past, this wasn’t my favorite of hers.

Jake and Ava had been best friends forever, but they had always been platonic. Jake had been in love with Ava for as long as he could remember, but the one time he tried to let Ava know how he felt she rejected him. With a failed marriage and no prospects on her 30th birthday, Ava decides to take matters into her own hands for the one thing she has always wanted, a baby. While she knows being a single mom won’t be easy, she is ready to make it happen. But when she asks Jake for his help, they both quickly begin to realize that everything is about to change between them. Jake has no problem helping, as long as it means doing things the old fashioned way, and a chance to prove to Ava once and for all that they belong together.

I liked both Ava and Jake, but if I’m honest I had trouble believing in their relationship. I saw Jake’s feelings and they were genuine to me. I really believed that he had loved Ava as more than a friend and pined for her for years. I had trouble believing Ava though. At first she was constantly saying that Jake was nothing more than a friend, and he was like a brother...she never saw him as more. Then suddenly things turned and she saw him as more, always had and had just buried it. I didn’t buy it. It can’t be both ways. Either she always had, but nothing had happened or she never did until now. It just didn’t make sense, and I couldn’t get behind their relationship 100% because of it. I did believe that they had a connection and chemistry, I just wasn’t believing the sudden switch in circumstances and backstory.

Overall, this one was okay. I really wanted to love it, and don’t get me wrong there were things I did really like about it. But I wanted to believe the story from start to finish and the more I thought about it the more I didn’t like that it seemed like things just changed midway through the book. I definitely liked the characters though, and I want to read more in this series. I think that a lot of readers will enjoy this one, especially if they don’t get caught up in the details like I did.

ARC Review: Spinning Out by Lexi Ryan

I am a huge fan of Lexi Ryan's and have enjoyed everything I have read from her. So when I saw that she had a new series coming out that was NA and centered around hot football players, it was a no-brainer to jump at the chance to read Spinning Out. I have to say though that this book felt nothing like Lexi's previous books, and unfortunately I really struggled with Spinning Out.

After a tragic accident in which she lost her brother and her boyfriend, Mia Mendez is trying to move forward with her life. Needing to put herself through school and take care of her alcoholic father, she takes a job as a nanny for the Woodison family which has her now living with her bedroom wall being that that borders Arrow Woodison's. There has always been an attraction between her and Arrow, but with him being best friends with her boyfriend they were always off-limits to each other, except for one night that changed everything. But now Mia and Arrow find themselves more drawn to each other than ever before, but Arrow has a secret that could destroy everything if Mia found out.

I didn't dislike Arrow or Mia, but I did have a tough time connecting with them. I felt like while we were given some of their background and saw some attraction between them, that things just felt surface deep. We never really got to see them fall for one another, and they spent more time avoiding each other or pushing each other away than really building something together. I think a lot of that was the fact that most of this story Mia was with Brogan or unable to move on from what had happened. Arrow and Mia did have some chemistry, but I just felt like something was missing here and I wanted more.

Another big problem here for me was the timeline. This book jumped around constantly between past and present, and it was really hard to keep track of when and where we were. It wasn't just going between past and present, but different times pre and post accident, and I just had a really tough time keeping it all straight and staying interested in the story. I wanted to know all that had happened and how it would play out, but just as I would start to get into the story, it would move time periods and it was very frustrating. This book was just all over the place when it came to timeline as well as with the story and all the drama. It was a bit too over the top and just had too much going on. I didn't feel like this book had the intensity that most of Lexi Ryan's books do, and frankly after awhile I just lost interest. I finished to find out what would happen, but unfortunately this book just wasn't at all what I had hoped for or come to expect from Lexi Ryan. As much as I have loved her books in the past, this one felt like a hot mess. I am interested in continuing the series since I did like the secondary characters that are set to get stories, but I just hope that they are like the other books I have read from Lexi rather than Spinning Out. If this one sounds like something you might like, it is worth giving a shot. Just because I had issues here doesn't mean that you won't enjoy it.

ARC Review: Holding Her Close by Lexi Ryan

If you have read any of the New Hope books from Lexi Ryan, you will recognize Janelle Crane as Nate Crane's twin sister. If you are new to Lexi Ryan or haven't read most of those books, Holding Her Close can be read as a complete Standalone. While I have loved all the books I have read from Lexi, her Here and Now books are my favorites as I love Hanna and Nate. So I have been anxiously awaiting Janelle's story since she played a bigger part in their books. This book definitely didn't disappoint, and I am so glad that we got to know Janelle better here.

Janelle Crane has finally landed her dream role as an actress, in which she will be taken serious rather than just be known as the actress that always plays an airhead. But her ex screws everything up when he asks her to dinner and the incident winds up all over the tabloids. Determined not to lose the part, Janelle hires a fixer to help get her reputation back on track. But when Janelle goes to her brother's Halloween party and makes out with the guy in the Batman suit she believes is to play her fake fiance, she quickly discovers that there was more than one Batman at the party and the one she made out with is none other than New Hope local cop Cade Watts. Cade hates actresses after his ex led him on for publicity and he has no interest in being Janelle's fake fiance to help fix her reputation. But when Janelle finds herself in danger from a stalker, Cade is determined to keep her safe and help her in a way he didn't in the past.

I loved Cade and Janelle. These two both had issues from their past that affected the way that they handled things here. Cade had been hurt and betrayed, and unfortunately that tainted the way he saw all actresses. While he was drawn to Janelle and wanted her, he didn't trust her and was easy to assume the worst. Yet he also couldn't help but want to look out for her and protect her, and I really liked seeing him get to know her and soften a bit when he saw that she was different. Janelle had been hurt and lost everything that she thought she had except for her career. She was insecure because of things her ex had done and said, and I really liked seeing her gain confidence here and discover that she wasn't the problem. I really felt like Cade was perfect for her, and it was good to see these two help each other grow and heal after all they had been through. The chemistry was smoking hot between these two, and I enjoyed seeing the slow build that their relationship took. They had some super steamy moments, but it was good to see them get to know one another and it all felt very natural to me.

Overall, this was a really good story and I liked the characters a lot. There was a lot of great moments between Janelle and Cade, but I also loved seeing some familiar faces. I had been wanting more of Janelle's story, and I really liked seeing beneath her facade. She was so much more than the world knew or had seen, and I really loved who she was. These two were great together, and I enjoyed this story a lot. If you are a fan of Ryan's, you will definitely want to check this book out! If you are new to her though, this is a great place to start and will make you want to go back and read all of the New Hope books! I can't wait to see what Lexi Ryan writes next.

ARC Review: Playing with Fire by Lexi Ryan

Playing with Fire is the first book in Lexi Ryan's new Mended Hearts Series, which features characters from New Hope. If you are a fan of Lexi Ryan's, you will recognize many familiar faces here. The Mended Hearts series books can each stand on their own, but the characters are interconnected and are best when read in order for full enjoyment. It is not necessary to have read any of the previous books to understand Playing with Fire, but if you are going to read any of the books I would recommend at least reading the Here and Now series since Max plays such a huge part in those books. If you haven't read those books though, beware of spoilers for those books below.

Dr. Phoenix Reid doesn't let many others close, and she definitely doesn't tell them about her past. She prefers to keep things private, but one night with Max Hallowell changes everything. She thought that she could keep things to one night of pleasure, but Max doesn't seem to be giving up. He wants Nix, and is willing to give her all the time that she needs. But Nix knows that she needs to keep away from Max in order to keep him and his daughter safe. But what happens when she starts to let Max in, and he is determined to help her even after learning everything? Can they find a way to make sure that Nix is safe and have a chance at a future together, or will everything go up in flames?

I really loved Max in the previous books, and I really felt badly for him. I always thought that Hannah needed to be with Nate, but I couldn't help but fall in love with Max. He had made some huge mistakes, but he was a great guy that gave so much of himself to others. My heart broke for him when he lost everything, but I was glad that he was able to focus on the positive in his life and I thought that he was a great dad to Claire. That was even more evident here, and he was so adorable with her and with everything he did for her. But I really liked him with Nix. He was every bit the good guy we have come to know and love, but he was also so supportive. I loved that he didn't judge her or give up on her. Nix did annoy me a bit in this book if I am honest. While I understood where she was coming from once all was revealed, her hot and cold act got old here. I was ready for it to be over before it was, and I wanted her to wake up and see just what she was at risk of losing with Max. They were so good for one another, and I wanted her to see that sooner than she did.

Overall, this was a good story though and I really liked how everything turned out. I love Max, and it was great to finally see him find some happiness! I was shocked when their connection first started to happen in previous books, because I never saw it coming. But throughout this book it become so clear how perfect they were for one another. I loved seeing familiar faces, and it was really great that they were all so supportive of Nix and Max together, because there very easily could have been some drama there with everyone's intertwined pasts. I am looking forward to more in this series though, and I cannot wait to get Cade's story next!

ARC Review: Something Real by Lexi Ryan

I am so torn when it comes to this book, and I really don't even know where to start with this review. If you haven't read Something Reckless, you need to start there before Reading Something Real. This book is the second part of Liz and Sam's story and you will be lost if you haven't read the previous book. Though you do need to read Something Reckless, you do not need to have read Lexi Ryan's Here and Now Series or the New Hope Series, though the characters are interconnected. I will tell you that I couldn't wait to read this book, and I loved Sam and Liz from the start of this series. But I did have some issues, and that kept me from really loving this book.

Something Real picks up after the events of Something Reckless, with Liz and Sam broken up after everything was revealed about who River was. Sam and Liz are both miserable and want to be together, but they have no idea how to get back to one another and neither of them has taken the initiative to contact the other. Liz moved to Indianapolis to work on the Guy campaign and has been there for five months. But when the Guy campaign suddenly brings Sam back into her life, they realize that they aren't as over as they thought they were. This time around there are more obstacles than ever and though they want to be together, can they actually make a relationship work?

I really loved Liz and Sam together in Something Reckless. These two just fit together so well, and I knew that they belonged together. I was so sad for them at the end of that book, but I just kept thinking that they had to find a way to make it work. Though I still liked Liz and Sam, this book didn't have me loving them as much as before. They both made bad decisions and seemed to be incapable of making the first move. They made assumptions and didn't talk to one another. I thought that Liz avoided Sam too much and should have been able to discuss things with him. Sam was so determined to always do the right thing that he missed so much of what was going on around him. I felt like he should have fought harder for Liz, and I wanted to see him step it up the way Liz deserved. They still had a lot of chemistry between them and their connection was never the problem, but they needed to work together more rather than separately.

I really thought that this book would be more about Sam and Liz coming together finally and moving past the pain and hurt that they had experienced in the first book. They already had so much to overcome that I didn't expect the amount of new obstacles they would have to face. As the drama kept piling up in this one, I just kept asking myself why this was necessary. They already had more than enough drama without adding the crazy they had to face in this book. I really felt like that was a lot of what left me on the fence about this book. I honestly thought at several points that Sam and Liz might have been better off apart, and it killed me to see that happen with these two. But they both made poor decisions, and I just felt like there was too much drama going on. Then we finally start to get some resolution and the story is over. The ending felt rushed and abrupt, and it could have easily been extended to give us a more satisfying place to stop. Though I was happy that all the crazy had been handled, I wanted to see what would happen for the characters beyond that. As much as I love Lexi Ryan and her books, I have to say I was a bit disappointed in this one. I think that Sam and Liz fans will be happy to have more of them and to see some familiar faces, but to me this wasn't the ending that they deserved. I am excited about the direction she is headed with Max next though, and I am so glad that he will be getting his story next. I have loved him since I first met him, though I knew he wasn't meant for Hanna. I can't wait to see more of him, and I look forward to reading more from Lexi in the future.

ARC Review: Something Reckless by Lexi Ryan

Something Reckless is the first book in the Reckless & Real Series by Lexi Ryan. This series is set in the New Hope world, but these can be read as standalone from those books. I loved getting to see some familiar faces though, and if you haven't read any of those books I would definitely recommend them, especially the Here and Now books as the Reckless & Real Series features Hannah's sister Liz. I couldn't wait to start this book, and Lexi Ryan proved again why I love her writing so much! This book is an absolute must read, and I am dying to get my hands on the next book already!

Liz Thompson has been trying to find the right guy while also searching for a new job. Things haven't been going her way for a long time, so she has turned to online dating. She joined Something Real, a new dating site for her area that lets you meet people without ever exchanging photos or names until you reach certain points in your relationship. There she met Riverrat69 and they instantly hit it off. He was looking to research the app for investment purposes and wasn't looking for anything more, while she was looking for love. As time goes on, Liz begins to pick up on hints about who River might actually be, and she becomes convinced that he is her former lover Sam. She has never been able to get over Sam, despite the history that they have between them. When River suggests that they break the rules and meet in person, Liz finally agrees. Will River actually be Sam though, or has Liz been seeing what she wants rather than the truth?

Liz and Sam's story starts in Something Wild, the free prequel by Lexi Ryan. While you don't need to read that to understand this story, I would highly recommend it because for one it is free and for two you get to see the history between Sam and Liz and how things began for them. Liz had always wanted Sam, and had tried to get him to notice her. Sam had tried to do the right thing and wanted to wait for her to be older, as she was his little sister's friend. But the two of them always cared about one another, despite the many obstacles in their way. I was really rooting for these two from the start. It was obvious that a lot had happened over the years and that a lot of it wasn't good, but the connection and chemistry between them was undeniable. These two were smoking hot, and I loved seeing them find their way back to one another. Liz also had a connection with River, and it was easy to see why she was so convinced that River and Sam were the same person. I thought that they were very compatible and I was really looking forward to their meeting and the big reveal.

I will say that this book is similar to Lexi Ryan's other stories, in that just when you think you have everything figured out she throws you a curve ball. This book was fantastic, and I absolutely couldn't put it down. I thought I had it figured out right along with Liz, and it turns out I didn't have a clue until the very end. After finishing this story, I don't know if I wanted the next book more or to start all over and go back through this entire book again. I definitely need the next book, and I have to know what happens for Liz and Sam next. Things were left hanging in this one, and I need to see what happens after how things ended here. Luckily we don't have too much longer to wait, because I think it would probably kill me if we did. I really can't say much about how things ended or what happened, but I will tell you to just read this. Lexi Ryan is a fantastic writer, and I have yet to read a story of hers that I didn't love. She is absolutely an auto-buy for me, and all of her books are must reads that I know I will enjoy.

Review: All for This by Lexi Ryan

All for This is the third and final installment in Lexi Ryan's Here and Now series. This book is not a standalone and is intended to be read only after Lost in Me and Fall to You. If you haven't read this series, this one is an absolute must read! I highly recommend these books and Hanna's story is definitely one that will stick with me forever. I have been both anxiously awaiting All for This and dreading it, because although I wanted to know what would happen I also didn't want Hanna's story to be over with. I was really happy with how things turned out, and I felt like we got all the answers that we have been looking for since the beginning of this series.

As Hanna continues to struggle with not remembering the days before her accident, she is also struggling with what to do with her future. Hanna always wanted Max and thought that he was the one that could give her everything she wanted for her future. But that was before she met Nate and felt the connection between them that was unlike anything she had felt before. Not knowing why she put Max's ring on before her accident, Hanna must now decide if she should trust in a decision she doesn't remember making. Should she move forward with the wedding and make things work with Max knowing that she still loves Nate? Or should she end things with Max knowing that she could be facing a future alone with many more tough decisions ahead of her? And will Hanna ever be able to recover her lost memories?

I have struggled through this whole series with Nate and Max. I love them both so much and they are so very different. Both are really great guys who anyone would be lucky to have. While I feel like Hanna could really make no wrong choice and that either of them could make her happy, I have always felt like one was the right guy for Hanna while the other was just the right guy. I have been worried from the beginning that I was backing the wrong team and that my wishful thinking was clinging to the guy I wanted her to choose. But I really feel like in the end things worked out how they should. Hanna got her happy ending and in my opinion she ended up with who was right for her and the one that she was meant to be with. It was hard to see her struggle as well as both Nate and Max, but I think that Hanna did what was best for everyone even if it meant that there were some hurt feelings and heartbreak along the way. I really thought that Hanna grew and changed so much over the course of this series, and I think that that was because of both Nate and Max. They both loved her and showed her that she was beautiful on the inside as well as out, and they helped her to see that the way she had been living was unhealthy. I think that Hanna was really a better person for having loved both Nate and Max, and I was glad to see that all of them came out having changed and grown for the better.

Overall, I think that this book was a really great ending to Hanna's story. I had been hoping to finally get some answers about her accident and what happened in the days leading up to it. I think that Lexi Ryan did a great job of tying up the lose ends and giving us a satisfying ending to the story. I will say that I was a bit disappointed when all was revealed, and I felt like the circumstances of Hanna's accident were a bit anticlimactic. I felt like so much had been building over these three books, so I thought that the truth was a bit of a let down. But the rest of the story was really good and was able to make up for the disappointment I felt over finding out that truth. I also thought that Lexi Ryan did a great job of setting up Hanna's sister Liz's story with Sam, and I can't wait to see what happens next for them. I thought that they were both really interesting and I am looking forward to getting to know them better. I also thought that some of the secondary characters really showed some growth in this book, and was glad to see that they were able to begin redeeming themselves. This story is really one that you can't say too much about without giving anything away, and trust me you do not want to have everything spoiled for you. I definitely recommend these if you haven't read them, and I am becoming a huge fan of Lexi Ryan's. I really love her writing style, and I can't wait to read more from her in the future.

ARC Review: Fall To You by Lexi Ryan

Fall To You is the second book in Lexi Ryan's Here and Now series, and is meant to be read in order. This is the continuing story of Hannah, Nate and Max. If you haven't read Lost In Me yet, you are definitely going to want to read that book first so that you know what is going on and has happened plus its an amazing book! I have been waiting for this next installment since I finished the first book, and I can honestly say that this book was worth the wait! I am absolutely loving this series and these books are beyond fantastic. I need the next book after reading this one and I cannot wait to get my hands on it!

Fall To You picks up where Lost In Me left off with what is going on in the present, but we are also given more of the past. Hannah is still trying to figure out her present with both Nate and Max, and she is also still piecing together her past. When we left off at the end of the first book, Hannah has just found out that not only is she not the virgin she thought she was, but that she is also pregnant. As she struggles with trying to find out who the father is, she is also having a tough time trying to navigate how to tell her mother than the wedding is off with Max. Hannah doesn't know if she can trust Max and the things that he is telling her, yet she knows that she still loves him. Hannah also knows that she loves Nate, but that he would make her no promises of a future together. As more truths are revealed, the more Hannah begins to question everything. How can she possibly chose one guy when they both have part of her heart and she still doesn't have all of her memories?

If you read my review of Lost In Me, you know that I have been solidly Team Nate from the beginning. I knew that Max had been hiding things from Hannah and that there were things about him that we didn't know. I liked him well enough, but I just felt like Nate was the one for Hannah. He cared about her for who she really was and he seemed to bring out the best in her. She seemed to really come alive with him, and she also seemed to feel more comfortable with him. While I still love Nate and think that he and Hannah belong together, this book really made me start to see how Hannah was also really great with Max as well. Max really did care about Hannah, and we get to see so much more of him in Fall To You. I was glad that we got to understand more of Max's character and see how he was willing to fight for Hannah and give her whatever she needed. He went out of his way to give her whatever he could, and he was really sweet with her. Hannah could very easily be with either Nate or Max and have a happy life and a great relationship with either of them. She has chemistry with both and she also has an emotional connection with both. But they bring out completely different sides of her, and I still think that Nate is the right choice for her even though I love Max now too.

This series has really brought on the emotions, and Fall To You was no different than the first when it came to being an emotional roller coaster. We are still discovering so much about Hannah's past and everything that happened before the accident. There is so much left to be revealed, and after this cliffhanger I am dying to know what happens next. I have to admit that I didn't expect to end up liking Max as much as I did, and he really surprised me in this book. I missed Nate in this one though, and this book focused much more on Max than Nate. I really hope that we get a lot of Nate in the next book, because I love his character so much. I also love how this series really keeps you guessing. There are twists and turns and for every question answered so many more come up. I can't wait to read All For This and see how things turn out and get more of Hannah's story. Lexi Ryan is a great writer and I absolutely love her writing style. She draws you in from the very beginning and keeps you interested well beyond the last page. These characters are interesting and deep, and their story feels so real to me. I highly recommend this series, and if you have read the first book you absolutely need to read this installment to see what happens. I can't wait to get All For This and to read more from Lexi Ryan in the future.

ARC Review: Lost In Me by Lexi Ryan

I know that I shouldn't have been surprised about this book having a cliffhanger because of the fact that Lost In Me is the first book in the Here and Now series. But seriously I was not expecting that ending! Talk about the mother of all cliffhangers, I need the next book now! This one was so good. I was instantly drawn into this story and I read it in a single sitting. I seriously could not put this one down and I loved every second of reading about how Hannah's life was unfolding and seeing as she got her memories back. I loved this book, and I am so intrigued by all the characters. This one is a must read!

When Hannah wakes up in the hospital, she has no idea what has happened over the last year. She has lost eleven months and everything in her life is completely different than what she remembers. Her longtime crush Max is now her loving fiance, her twin sister is no longer her best friend, and she has also lost about fifty pounds. At first glance her new life seems to be almost perfect. Her hot fiance is devoted to her and they are going to be sharing a life together, she owns her own bakery which was always her dream. But the more she starts to remember her past, she quickly begins to piece together the fact that her life is not what it seems at all. Now she is left trying to figure out her entire relationship with Max, but also why she is drawn to the sexy rocker Nate. Nate seems to know more than he is letting on, and Hannah is determined to get answers before she marries Max. Who is the man for Hannah, and was her fall down the stairs that landed her in the hospital really a fall? Or did someone push her?

I liked Max. He seemed to be so perfect at first, but of course no one ever is. The more we get to know him, the more I could tell something was a bit off with him though. He really did treat Hannah well, and he seemed to be really kind and patient with her. At first he seemed to be interested in her twin, but when Hannah wakes up and finds his ring on her finger Max only has eyes for her. I feel like we really don't know him that well yet, and there is a ton more to his story. I am curious to learn more about him. I have to admit that I was team Nate from the start though. We don't know a ton about him and of course the more we find out, the more questions there are. But there is just something about him that seems to be so genuine and sincere. I feel like he was more honest with Hannah than anyone else really had been even if he didn't tell her much or talk to her a lot. What he did say seemed to ring true every time, and he seemed so torn up and lost about his feelings and their relationship. I felt so bad for him and all that he was going through. I really liked Hannah's character, and I enjoyed the first part of her journey. This entire book is one emotional ride, and I can't imagine what it would be like to be in her shoes. She has no idea who some people are, and she has no idea what she has done for a year. Even the people she would normally turn to don't seem to really know who she is at this point because she has changed so drastically. I really loved that her character was so easy to relate to though. She was a normal girl, that was confused and lost and just looking to find her way. I also really liked that she was so real and that she struggled with some issues that most girls face at one point in their life or another. It was hard to watch her struggle with her weight and be treated horribly by some because of it. I really liked how both Nate and Max seemed to like her for who she was though and they seemed to be supportive of her regardless of her size.

Overall, this story was a really fantastic start. This one has a huge cliffhanger that left me absolutely reeling and had me wondering so many things. This book definitely has more questions than answers, and once you think you start to figure something out it goes in a completely different and unexpected direction. I feel like we are just scratching the surface of these characters and their story. I will say that I really have no clue how things are going to turn out and I have no clue what has happened. I love that this book is so different and unpredictable. This book really is a journey, and I am so glad that I took a chance on this one. I can't wait to find out more and to see what happens next in their story as well as get more pieces of their past. I know that cliffhangers scare some readers off, and this one is a real doozy. I do think that this book is worth reading though, and I know that with two more books coming we are a long way from the end. I am excited to see what Lexi Ryan has in store for Hannah, Nate and Max. I highly recommend this book, and I think that no matter what team you find yourself on you will really like both Nate and Max. Now all we have to do is wait until June for the release of Fall to You to see where Lexi Ryan takes us next.
