ARC Review: Resist by Missy Johnson

Resist is my first book by this author. I picked this book up because the summary was intriguing. There was a lot of potential but sadly by the time I got to the end of the book I had the feeling that the story didn't quite live up to its potential.

I think the main issue for me in this book was the character inconsistency. It was hard to determine exactly who Char and Jaxon were. Char is in part depicted as this innocent young woman who is terrified of Jaxon and just trying to start her career as a reporter. Jaxon is portrayed as this super kinky heartless man who is probably capable of murder and probably incapable of genuine affection. My issue is that despite Char's fear of Jaxon, she somehow manages to be totally fearless. She pushes all of his buttons and says whatever she wants to say whenever the words pop into her heads. This is always followed by intense regret and concern about how he might react but the cycle repeats frequently during the story. Jaxon is just totally not the super bad guy he seems to be for a couple of pages. I'm ok with dark characters and a cold hero but that is not Jaxon. By the end of the book, Jaxon seems much more like spoiled teenager than a grown man with a coherent revenge plan.

Speaking of revenge, the thing that Jaxon is bent on getting revenge for makes no sense. I don't want to give away what the whole revenge sub-plot is about but it really fell short in terms of the reason for it and the way that Jaxon tried to carry it out. I particularly didn't like the involvement of Kasey in the revenge. It made Jaxon seem super petty and when the whole thing played out, it was just kind of dumb. When an author sets up a revenge plot, I've come to expect many more layers and a logical resolution. That just didn't happen here. In fact, I'm still trying to figure out why Char became a part of Jaxon's plot. Jaxon had like 5 other girls in his harem but swore he needed Char for his plot. First, I didn't like all the other girls and second I couldn't understand why one of them would not be suitable to the revenge plot.

Last, based on the description and cover of this book it seems like you are going to get some super kinky steam. It didn't happen. Jaxon keeps talking about how dirty he likes it but it NEVER comes across in the story. The sex between Char and Jaxon is like 1 step above vanilla and that's being generous.

In closing, there was more potential in this book than there was a good book. Unfortunately, this wasn't one of my favorite reads.

ARC Review: Breaking Noah by Missy Johnson & Ashley Suzanne

Breaking Noah is the first book that I have read that was co-authored by Missy Johnson and Ashley Suzanne. Though I have read Missy Johnson before, I was unfamiliar with Ashley Suzanne. I wondered how these two would write together, and I have to say that the writing was good in my opinion. It flowed well and I thought that the book was cohesive and didn't seem to have two separate voices as can sometimes be the case with more than one author. While we did get both Noah and Zara's POVs in this story, I thought that they worked really well together. I did have some mixed feelings when it came to the story itself though.

Zara Hamilton thought that she had life all planned out, but then her cousin died and everything changed. When she finds out more about Karly's death, Zara sets out to right the wrong that took her best friend from her. She plans to seduce and destroy the man responsible. As she sets out to break Noah Bain, she quickly finds out that the college professor isn't who she had thought she was though and things begin to change. Will Zara continue with her plan to make Noah pay, or will she give in to the attraction and connection she feels to the one man she knows she shouldn't want?

I liked Noah. He was sexy and sweet. He came from a well off family and decided to pursue his passion rather than give in and do what they expected of him, and I really admired that about him. He was a great guy, and you could tell that he struggled with being in the position he was. He never expected to be caught between his profession and someone he could see a future with. Zara on the other hand I had issues with. If I am honest, she is the biggest thing I disliked about this story. I understood that she was trying to deal with the loss of her cousin/best friend, but the things she did were unacceptable to me at times. She was immature and annoying and I just really couldn't stand her. I felt like there was real chemistry between Zara and Noah though, and that was part of the problem I had with her actions. I wanted her to stop doing what she was and see what had been clear to me from pretty early on. The other thing that bothered me about these two was the fact that they were cheating. Each of them had a significant other that they were cheating on, and yet neither one of them was committed to the relationships they were in. They weren't happy and didn't seem to have any reason for continuing to be with them, so I really didn't like the fact that they didn't just end those relationships. Zara and Noah together almost didn't seem to be cheating to me because of the way things were, but then it would be brought up again and I would be reminded of the situations they were in.

I did like the fact that this one was so steamy though, and like I said before Noah and Zara had great chemistry. The authors did a great job of showing the passion and desire between these two. This story was fast paced and started off right away. I liked that there wasn't a ton of slow build-up, but rather that we pretty much hit the ground running. It kept me interested and turning the pages to find out what would happen next, even if Zara was getting on my nerves the whole way through. While I had things figured out early on and I knew what would happen for the most part, I was interested and engaged and wanted to keep reading to see if I was correct. I think that was due to the fact that I really liked Missy and Ashley's writing, and also that I loved the dual POV. If it had been easier to like or relate to Zara, I really think this one would have been a home run for me. If you are looking for something sexy and fast paced, I think you might like this one. I would read more from these authors in the future, and I think that they make a great writing team. I will look for more from them and I am curious to see what they do next.

ARC Review: Wicked Innocence by Missy Johnson

I have to admit I was really intrigued by the blurb and cover of this book. I knew that this one was going to be one that I would definitely have some strong opinions on. Wicked Innocence by Missy Johnson seemed like it was going to be all about the taboo and sexy and completely naughty which I was really excited about. This story ended up being different than I expected though, and while I enjoyed it there were some things that I had issues with.

Micah is the new lead singer of the band Resurrection. She left home at the age of 14 and has lied about her age ever since. Even though her ID says that she is 21, she is actually only 17. Joining the band she immediately meets their manager Saxon Waite. He is the ex bad boy of rock, and is 25. Growing up with posters of him on her wall, Micah is excited to be working with him. When they head out on tour, the end up bonding right away and grow close quick. The attraction between them is something that neither of them can fight no matter how hard they try. But Micah knows that everything between them as well as with the band could be ruined if the truth came out. Even though she doesn't want to lie to him and continues to feel more guilty by the day, how can she ever tell him the truth?

I really loved Saxon. He was sweet and sexy, and I loved his personality. He was great with Micah right away, and you could tell that they had a connection right from the start. He had been through so much with his fame and life at such a young age that he made some bad decisions and ended up paying the price. He was struggling with guilt and with a family that blamed him for a lot of things. I was really glad that he was able to start to heal though and move forward with his life. Micah was strong and determined, and I couldn't believe how much independence she had at such a young age. She had such a good head on her shoulders despite everything, and while I didn't agree with everything she did I understood where she was coming from. I really liked her with Saxon, and I thought that he was really good for her. She was running from her past, and it was good for her to connect with someone and have him help her move forward. I thought that they had a lot of chemistry and that they were really hot together.

While this book did have steamy moments and it was sexy, I thought that this one ended up being much sweeter than I had expected. I had been hoping for more of the taboo and naughty sexy bits, and it wasn't like that for the most part. While Micah wasn't a sweet virgin, she also wasn't totally wicked either. I guess I had just been hoping for more wicked like the name of the book implied. I also kept thinking that Micah was a weird name for a girl spelled the way it was, and I kept having to remind myself that Micah was the heroine. I think that might just be a personal thing, but it didn't work for me at all. I did think that the story was good and enjoyable, and it was definitely a quick read. I had no problems getting into the story and I thought it was definitely a good way to entertain myself for a few hours. I would love to get to know some of the other guys from the band a bit better after reading this one, and I hope that maybe we will see more of them in the future. I did really enjoy getting to know Saxon though, and he was one of the highlights of this book. If you are looking for a sweet story with some steam to it and some hot rockstars, you might give this one a shot.

Review: Tease by Missy Johnson

I have to admit that this book is definitely one that I was drawn to because the blurb really intrigued me. I mean a male escort...tell me you aren't immediately curious! I have been anxiously awaiting the moment when I could one-click and read this one. I have never read a book by Missy Johnson before, but I have heard great things and figured this was the perfect one to start with. So all that being said, I will tell you that this book is not what I was expecting at all. There were some parts that I really liked, and then there were others that I had a lot of issues with. For a book about a male escort and all the sex he was having, I have to say that the steam factor on this one was surprisingly low for me.

Liam "Coop" Cooper is a male escort. In order to pay for his mother's medical bills and take care of his family, he starts having sex with rich and powerful women. He has clients that are all different ages and are in several prominent occupations. When his childhood crush and sister's best friend comes back into his life, he views her as nothing more than a complication. Mia was not only his crush, but he was also friendly with her. Now that she is moving back to NYC, she needs a temporary place to stay that is close to her job. Liam's sister Nic quickly volunteers Coop's place as a temporary home for her. Not able to say no, Coop allows Mia to move in and things start to get complicated. They are both determined to keep things platonic for their own reasons, but the attraction quickly becomes more than either one of them can fight. But how can the possibly have anything more when Coop needs to keep his job in order to support his mom? And what happens when the truth comes out about his job?

I liked Coop. He was a fun loving guy who was able to just go with the flow. You could tell that he didn't get worked up too often, and I loved that he wasn't over the top dominant. He was sweet and loving to those he cared about, and was extremely loyal to those he was close to. I loved that he would do anything for his family, and always put them first. Sometimes he did this to a fault, but you could really tell that they meant everything for him and he would gladly sacrifice himself for them. I liked Mia, but I felt that we didn't really get to know her much. For being the heroine of the story, I felt that she was still mostly a mystery even after I had finished the book. She was nice and you could tell that she really cared for Coop. I liked that she was funny and had no problem joking around with Coop as well as his family and friends. But really, I can't say too much more about her because I honestly feel like I don't know her. Coop and Mia seemed to have some good chemistry and attraction between them, but really Coop had chemistry with just about everyone in this story.

My main problem with this book isn't the fact that Coop continued to sleep around after Mia reentered his life. It came from the fact that I was expecting so much more from the sex scenes than I felt that we got. They seemed short and often times abrupt. It was almost as if they were completely rushed with very few details. Not what I was expecting from an erotic novel. They also were really repetitive. There were some differences between the different characters and their kinks, but overall they were mostly the same with a few twists. I also thought that there were times that the story was sort of hard to follow and didn't flow well. We would be in one situation only to switch mid paragraph into another, and it was at times confusing for the reader. I wished that we had been given more of a chance to really get to know Mia and Coop better as a couple. I think that this book would have worked better for me had we seen them really get through everything and spend some time getting to know them. I liked Beth a lot though and I am excited to read her story next. Honestly she was one of the best parts of this book and I really enjoyed her scenes with Coop. I will admit that I thought he had better chemistry with Beth than Mia, and I was really hoping that they might somehow end up together. I thought that we knew her much better than Mia. For me, this story had so much promise but it just didn't live up to my expectations. I was hoping for steamier sex scenes and I feel like these just fell flat. I will give Promiscuous a shot though because I am excited to see what is in store for Beth, and I'm hoping that it will be more of what I was expecting from Tease.
