ARC Review: A Moment of Madness by Brooklyn Skye

I'm almost positive I read the first book in this series. I don't have a very specific memory but I recall thinking it was pretty good. I probably did not like this book as much because it stumbled on one of the things I can't stand- a clueless heroine.

Ok so Sailor gets the bright idea to return to her Father's bar to "take over" after he passes away. Slight problem. Sailor left home when she was 18. She was a super wild teenager and went out to sew her wild oats. Or get some oats sewn....I don't know. Whatever the case may be, her Father passes away and Sailor decides to go back to Boston and claim his bar. Her idea is to save up some cash and use it to buy out the owner. By the way, the owner is Ryan. Ryan has been running the bar for years and it was left to him by Sailor's Father. Ryan is a good guy who really loved Sailor's Father.

Sailor and Ryan meet totally by accident. To make a long story short, the two wind up having a one night stand. They are extremely attracted to one another. While the chemistry was strong, it did not go over well when Sailor marched into Ryan's bar and told him she was there to claim it. Ryan had heard of Sailor as the wild child who left her sick Dad. The minute he finds out that Sailor is the hot Sailor he met before, all the chemistry goes poof. Suddenly Sailor finds herself just begging Ryan for a job so she can stay near the memories of her Father. Ryan agrees ad the chemistry quickly reappears between the two. Eventually it all gets worked out.

My issue is that I just felt like Sailor was stupid. I have no idea why she thought Ryan would just give her his bar for almost no money. It was a source of continuous aggravation to me. After Sailor and Ryan start working together, I liked seeing them together but Sailor still irritated me. She is supposed to be quirky but she comes across more as kind of flighty and I just wasn't into it. The sex scenes are ok. Nothing world changing but a solid ok. In the end, the romance works but it just wasn't my favorite story.

ARC Review: A Moment of Weakness by Brooklyn Skye

A Moment of Weakness is a nanny-boss romance and a pretty sweet one. The book is about Laurel who starts working for Micah as a nanny for his six year old daughter. As it turns out Micah is a mob enforcer who delivers not so gentle reminders to people who owe the mob money. As a result, Micah spends the majority of the book believing that he is not good enough for someone as sweet and pure (in a freaky fantasy sort of way) as Laurel. From almost the first moment they meet, however, there is a chemistry between Laurel and Micah that neither of them can ignore very long. The issue is whether Micah's mob ties will kill his relationship with Laurel before it really even gets started.

I like both of the characters in this book and I like the level of development the author put into both. There were some moments when I was frustrated with Laurel for putting up with Micah but I really liked that Laurel saw the best in him and tried to encourage him to do the same. I also thought it was good that the author took time to depict Laurel really wanting to gt to know Micah. Micah is the typical tight lipped brooding Hero but Laurel is undeterred in her efforts to get him to open up.

I understood where Micah was coming from and I liked the back story about his father. Micah is the most sympathetic professional ass kicker I've ever read about. I found the point that he never really had a choice about the direction his life would take particularly interesting. Micah will drive you crazy sometimes because he wants Laurel but he wants to protect her so he pushes her away. In the end though, you just want Micah to win.

Micah's daughter Shae is one of the main supporting characters in the book and she provides a lot of insight into both main characters through their interactions with her. Micah's relationship with Shae and his parenting decisions show the constant conflict between who Micah wants to be, who he thinks he can be and who he is. Shae's insistence that Micah step his parenting up illustrates her belief in Micah being more than he thinks he can be. The arguments Laurel and Micah have over Shae are really just subtext for the issues they have with one another and adding Shae to the mix was a really good way for the author to show us that.

My only criticism is that the book can be a little slow. Sometimes it felt like not much was happening very fast. This also isn't a really epic romance but it is a very solid book in this particular sub-genre. I recommend you give it a try.

ARC Review: Bone Deep by Brooklyn Skye

After reading Fragile Line by Brooklyn Skye, I couldn't wait to read more of her work. So I jumped when offered the chance to read and review Bone Deep. As much as I had loved Fragile Line though, I didn't feel the same way about Bone Deep. While Bone Deep was a decent story, it wasn't one that I loved or want to go back and read. This one just didn't offer anything much in the way of new or different and is a story that I thought was predictable.

Krister Ledoux is dealing with the fallout of a horrible tragedy that was committed by his father. His dad caused a horrible train accident that left several people dead and even more injured. Krister has been receiving hate mail and is determined to not only find who is sending the letters, but also do what he can to atone for his father's mistake. But when he ends up meeting a mysterious girl at the train station, he can't help but finally feel alive again. Krister knows that Cambria is dealing with something and is looking for an escape, and he will do whatever it takes to help her the way she has helped him. But Cambria has no idea who Krister is and that his father is the one who killed so many people in the accident. When the truth comes out, Krister and Cambria are left to deal with the fallout from the secrets that they kept from one another. Can they find a way to move forward, or will their secrets have been too painful to recover from?

I liked Krister and Cambria well enough, but I didn't really connect with them. They were younger characters, but I honestly felt like they were pretty immature even for their age group. They were pretty self-centered and didn't really think of anyone else. I especially thought that was true in the case of Krister. I do understand that they had both been through a lot and were young, but I still thought that it was no excuse for some of their actions. Krister had withdrawn from life and his friends and refused to move forward with his life. He felt like because of his dad's actions and the way some people treated him was an excuse to stop working at his internship, stop attending class, and be kind of a jerk to his friends. Cambria pretty much buried her head in the sand and refused to take action where her brother was concerned. She knew he was acting unusual and having problems, and yet she didn't really do anything about it until it got out of hand. I did feel like Cambria and Krister were good together and that they had some really great moments. But I just was left feeling sort of ho hum about them as a couple.

Overall, I thought that this story was mostly enjoyable. The beginning was slow and was a bit confusing at first. It kind of felt as though the reader is dropped into the middle of a story and you are left sort of wondering if you had missed anything. I felt like I was playing catch up trying to figure out what was going on. I also didn't care for the fact that Krister was still fooling around with Jess while things were beginning and going on with Cambria. He didn't want her with anyone else, and yet he was still off and on with his ex. While this story was a good read, it just didn't blow me away and wasn't one that I will remember. I felt like it was similar to other NA stories out there, and that it followed a pretty predictable path. There really wasn't any new ground broken here, but that is okay if that is what you are looking for. I think if you want a quick and easy NA read that you might give this one a shot. But if you are looking for something unique or different, this one might not be for you. I will look for more in the future from Brooklyn Skye, because while I wasn't a huge fan of this story I really like her writing style and loved Fragile Line.

ARC Review: Fragile Line by Brooklyn Skye

This is a tough review for me to write. Fragile Line by Brooklyn Skye was a really good book, and it was definitely one of the most different and unique books I have ever read. That being said, I had a few issues with the book but nothing too major. The reason this one is so hard for me to write is that it is almost next to impossible to really give a review without spoiling this book. Even giving a summary could spoil a ton, and i'm sure that is why the blurb is purposely vague. I think that this book is definitely worth the read, and I recommend going into this one blind. Trust me, you don't want anything to spoil this one for you.

Ellie has a great boyfriend who she really loves. She has her best friend Dani, and a good family. But she has been losing time and having blackouts. She finds herself coming back into her life randomly missing minutes, hours and sometimes days. The blackouts are becoming more frequent though, and Ellie's life is spinning out of control. She wakes up in an apartment of a guy she has never met before, and after she returns home finds out that she had been gone for three days. Ellie has no idea what is going on or who to talk to about it. As her blackouts get worse, she starts to get memories and visions of a horrific childhood that she has never remembered.

I felt so bad for Ellie. She was really confused and was suffering alone. She didn't know who to talk to or what she had done. When she finally did start to open up to her boyfriend Shane, he didn't handle it the best. Shane was really sweet and I felt bad for him also. He did handle things badly and I felt like he let his best friend Lexi get away with too much. The first half of the book or so I honestly thought I was going to hate Shane. He seemed to be a bit bi-polar at times one minute really into her and the next he was judging her and not believing her. But towards the end when he really started to catch on that something wasn't right he was really great and a completely different person. Its hard to really blame him for his bad actions when he was young and also everything pointed to the wrong conclusions. Gwen was such a fighter and was super strong. She had to be and it showed. She really ticked me off at times, but I also understood everything that she was thinking and feeling. I loved Griffin. He was another character that I felt bad for. He was such a sweet guy and he had absolutely no clue what he was in the middle of. He was such a great character and I really loved everything about him.

Overall, this story was beautiful and heartbreaking. It was so captivating, and from the second that I started reading I couldn't put it down. This story was truly one of a kind and was so interesting. Honestly I couldn't ever have predicted what was going on, and I was so surprised with how everything played out. Trust me when I tell you that this book is definitely worth the read. Its hard to be too hard on these characters when you consider that they are all about 16-18 years old. I can't even imagine being put through the things they were and trying to figure out how to handle everything. This story seemed so real and believable to me, and I think that is what really drew me in from the start and kept me invested. This book was so good and I wish I could say more, but this one is a must read and you'll just have to pick this one up to see what it is all about. I can't wait to read more from Brooklyn Skye in the future after reading this fantastic story.
