New York Times and USA TODAY bestselling author Katee Robert learned to tell her stories at her grandpa’s knee. Her 2015 title, The Marriage Contract, was a RITA finalist, and RT Book Reviews named it 'a compulsively readable book with just the right amount of suspense and tension." When not writing sexy contemporary and romantic suspense, she spends her time playing imaginary games with her children, driving her husband batty with what-if questions, and planning for the inevitable zombie apocalypse.
This short features Aubry and Quinn from FOOL ME ONCE, my dirty talking cowboy series. They’ve been together for a bit, and they’re engaged, but they’re about to get a huge surprise, right in time for the new year…
“Come on, peaches. We were supposed to be there an hour ago.”
Aubry stared at her reflection in the bathroom mirror. She’d only agreed to a New Year’s Eve party because Jules had insisted. It was her best friend’s first year as a married woman, and she wanted to ring in the upcoming year right. They’d been planning this thing for over a month and, despite herself, she’d actually started to look forward to it.
Now, all she wanted was to crawl into the nearest cupboard and pretend the rest of the world didn’t exist.
Banging on the bathroom door had her jumping nearly out of her skin. She tensed, but she’d forgotten to lock it, so when Quinn decided to be a nosy bastard, the door just swung right open. He took a step into the bathroom and froze. “What’s wrong?”
“Nothing’s wrong. Why would anything be wrong?” She knew she wasn’t even a little convincing, but she had to try.
He crossed his big arms over his chest and, despite herself, her body perked right up. Quinn’s brows lowered. “We can do this the easy way or the hard way.”
“What’s the hard way?” She didn’t like these ultimatums he’d started giving her when they moved in together. They were always ridiculous, and he always came out on top—sometimes literally.
“It involves tickling.”
Aubry glared. “I despise tickling.”
“Hence it being the hard way.”
Her stomach sank when she realized she wasn’t getting out of this one, either. Quinn had quickly figured out all her buttons, and he had no problem pushing them when she was acting like a jackass… Kind of like now. She looked away. “What’s the easy way?”
“An orgasm or two before we leave.” When she shot him a look, he gave an unrepentant shrug. “We’re already late—might as well make it worth the trouble.”
Pressure built in her chest until she couldn’t draw a full breath. “Oh God.”
Instantly, he was at her side, guiding her to the closed toilet and pushing her head gently between her knees. “Breathe, peaches. I was just fucking with you. I’m not going to tickle you.”
“It’s not that.” Her eyes burned in a way that was certainly not tears. She swallowed hard, a sound coming out of her mouth that was freakishly like a sob. “I can’t do this.”
His hand on her back froze. “Explain.”
She’d spent the last three hours trying to figure out how to broach the subject with him, but every single option didn’t sit right. And fleeing into the night wasn’t how she dealt with her problems anymore—even if she’d been giving the tiny window in the bathroom longing looks.
So she just blurted it out. “I’m pregnant.”
He went terribly still and silent. Quinn was never still, and it would take death before he stopped running his big mouth, so to have him there-not-there right after she blurted the most insane thing in her life snapped something deep inside her.
Aubry shot up, nearly colliding with his chin. “Damn it, you want kids. I didn’t know if I want kids until I saw those two lines, but I want kids. Our parents sucked as parents, but that doesn’t mean we’re going to suck as parents. I have a whole secondary zombie survival plan in the event of unplanned pregnancy and, whelp, looks like that’s now my primary zombie survival plan.” His face was so freakishly blank that she just kept talking. “I know we weren’t planning on babies or even talking about planning on babies, but—funny story—apparently when you’re on antibiotics, your birth control doesn’t work, which I should have remembered because it’s only the plot of like half a dozen movies, but I didn’t and I’m sorry, but I’m—”
He pressed a finger to her mouth. “Stop talking.” Quinn scooped her up like she was a sack of potatoes and walked out of the bathroom.
He’d said not to talk, but her nerves got the best of her—again. “You’re not going to toss my out on my ass, are you?”
He snorted, the first thawing in that crazy blankness. “For such a smart girl, you can be dense sometimes. I love you, you idiot.”
“I’m not an idiot.” She felt like an idiot. “We’re late.”
“In more ways than one, apparently.” He strode into their bedroom and kicked the door shut behind him. “We’re also not going to that damn party.” Before she could ask what they were going to do, he continued. “I’m going to set you down, and you’re going to strip out of that ridiculously sexy black dress while I call Adam and let him know.”
He set her on her feet, letting her slide down his body in a move that had her shivering despite her nerves. Aubry licked her lips. “And then?”
“And then, peaches, I’m going to make love to you.” Quinn framed her face with his big hands. “We’re celebrating. You see, the love of my life just gave me the best news ever—we’re going to be parents.” He grinned, which head her heart kicking up a notch.
She barely waited for Quinn to leave the room to grab his phone before she shimmied out of her dress. In the time since she’d taken the test, she’d barely dared hope that he’d react like this. They were engaged, after all, but planning to get married and planning on bringing a baby into the world were two very different things.
The first flutter of sheer joy took her breath away. This was happening. No one was freaking out, though she had no illusions—the freak outs would come later. Namely, her freakouts.
I haven’t even told Jules yet.
She considered laying on the bed, but it was too damn passive. So she waited for Quinn to walk back into the bedroom and then she went for his belt buckle. “I need you.”
He knocked her hands away long enough to rid himself of his clothes and then she was in his arms as he backed them toward the bed. As last moment, Quinn twisted so he was on bottom, giving her a heart-stopping grin. “I want to watch you, peaches.”
She arched her back, liking the way his blue eyes darkened as he watched her breasts. “I’m can’t wait.”
“Good.” He slid a finger into her, and then a second. “I love you.”
“I love you, too.” She braced on hand on his chest and reached for his cock with her other. “Now stop talking and make love to me. Or sex me up. Or fuck me. I’m up for either, any, all three.”
He laughed, the sound cut short as she notched his cock at her entrance and sank onto him in one smooth move. “Shit.”
Aubry barely waited to adjust to him before she started moving. She rolled her hips, taking him deeper yet. “There. Right there.”
“I know.” He gripped her hip with one hand, and stroked her clit with his other. “After this, we’re going slow, peaches.” His lazy grin made her toes curl. “But I’ll let you take the edge off first.”
It wouldn’t take long, not with her orgasm already threatening. She rode him, each sliding motion of him filling her and his thumb over her clit bringing her closer to the edge. But never quite there. “Quinn, damn it, stop teasing me.”
He flipped them and hiked one of her legs up and around his hip. The move pushed him impossibly deep, hitting a spot inside her that nearly made her eyes cross. She dug her nails into his ass. “Yes. There.”
“Whatever you need. Anything you need.” He pulled almost all the way out and then slammed into her. Then again. On the third time, she came screaming. Quinn kept his movements consistent, drawing out her orgasm. He kissed her, long and slow. “If there was any doubt, I am so fucking happy.”
The jagged piece inside her clicked into place, and she managed a bleary smile. “Me, too. Freaked out—seriously freaked out—but happy.”
“Good.” He pulled out of her and shifted to the side, his hand replacing where his cock had just been. “Now buckled up, buttercup, because I’m nowhere near done with you yet.”
They say opposites attract, but this is just ridiculous.Aubry Kaiser doesn’t like people—actually, that’s not right. She loathes people. With her crippling anxiety, there’s no way she can demo her favorite video game at a convention with five thousand other people. Maybe if she brings someone to act as a shield…But the only person available is the sexy cowboy she can’t stand.Quinn Baldwyn is in a mess of his own. He’s been dodging his wealthy family’s matchmaking attempts—and life advice—for years, but with his sister’s wedding on the horizon, he needs of a shield of his own.He and Aubry can barely hold down a civil conversation, but in bed…fireworks. And the closer they get to Quinn’s sister’s wedding, the more he realizes that he might actually like Aubry. Now it’s up to him to convince her she might actually like him, too.
