Top 6 Songs To Get You In the Mood To Read Rising Star

I’m so excited to be here today. Thanks to Ramblings From This Chick for the opportunity to talk about my new release RISING STAR, which is the first in my Shooting Stars series. In RISING STAR, we meet Charley Layton, a small town girl from Kentucky living her dream of being a radio personality on the hottest country station in Nashville. She had one priority—her career. Relationships are off the table, until she meets Dylan Monroe. Dylan is a forever kind of guy, but he’s also on the cusp of stardom and still figuring out how to navigate his growing success.

Obviously, country music is an integral part of the book, so of course the characters would turn to music to express their relationship. First up, we have three songs from Charley.

1.) Run by Matt Nathanson and Sugarland

The book opens on Charley’s birthday and the night she meets Dylan. From the moment he gets her on the dance floor, sparks fly. She doesn’t want to like him, but she can’t help herself. And after their first kiss, the idea of giving herself a one-night birthday present is too good to resist. This song is crazy sexy and is basically a sex scene set to music with two amazing performers delivering the steam.

2.) It’s Different For Girls by Dierks Bentley and Elle King

Of course, there has to be a little heartbreak in ever love story, and RISING STAR is no different. Being the girl left behind when Dylan hits the road taps into all of Charley’s insecurities, and when it’s obvious he’s having too much fun out on the road, she finds that Dierks and Elle are right. Nobody said love was fair.

3.) What I Never Knew I Always Wanted by Carrie Underwood

When the story starts, finding a forever love is the last thing on Charley’s mind. But by the end, she finds that sometimes what you never knew you wanted lands right in your lap, typically in the form of a man. Lucky for her, Dylan is one worth holding onto.

Now onto Dylan, which is a little easier for me, since I had a full playlist from his perspective while writing the book.

1.) One Night Girl by Blake Shelton

As mentioned above, Charley’s plan is one night with Dylan, but he has very different plans. This song is all about a guy spending a night with a girl, all while knowing one night could never be enough. That’s exactly how Dylan feels about Charley, and why he isn’t at all happy to wake up alone the next morning.

2.) What Ifs by Kane Brown and Lauren Alaina

The battle Dylan fights for much of the book is with Charley’s doubts. What if they don’t work? What if they do? What if he gets famous and finds someone better? Dylan’s answer is the same to all the questions. They’ll never know if they don’t try, and he’s determined to try for as long as she’ll let him.

3.) Die a Happy Man by Thomas Rhett

Though Dylan and Charley find a way to chase their dreams together, in the end, Dylan knows that if he never hits number one or play for a million people screaming his name, he’ll still die a happy man so long as Charley is by his side. Which makes for a satisfied sigh on the last page.

A popular DJ at the hottest station in Nashville, Charley Layton is doing what she’s always wanted to do: living in the heart of country music. Charley puts her career first and relationships second, but when a charismatic stranger in a black cowboy hat invites her back to his place, she decides to give herself one night of no-strings fun.

But Dylan Monroe isn’t a no-strings kind of guy. Charley is beautiful, brainy, and brassy as hell—the kind of girl he’s always wanted. When his record label books him an interview on Charley’s show, he’s determined to find out why he woke up alone, and when he can see her again.

With Dylan now the most eligible bachelor in country music, Charley doubts their fling stands a chance, but she’s willing to try. Dylan dreams of fame, but he also craves a life offstage with Charley. Can he convince her that both of their dreams are worth chasing, and that love is still possible, even in the spotlight?
