ARC Review: Once More, My Darling Rogue by Lorraine Heath

Lorraine Heath never disappoints! I have to be careful when I start her books that it’s on the weekend because I know that I’m not going to be able to put it down. I absolutely loved “Once More, My Darling Rogue.” This the second book in the Scandalous Gentlemen of St. James series the hero is Drake Darling son to Frannie Darling from “Surrender to the Devil.”

Although I never read Frannie’s story I loved the Scoundrels of St. James series as well. Drake is Frannie and Sterling Mabry’s (Duke of Greystone) adopted son. Drake was a street child that was adopted by Frannie and Sterling. Drake’s heritage was very common, his father was sentenced to death for numerous crimes. Although only a young child, he saw his father hang to death.

When the story begins Drake is at his sister Grace’s party. Despite the fact that Drake was raised in a wealthy home he never felt like he deserved love or to call The Greystone’s his parents that is why he never takes their name but adopts Frannie’s name from when she was a street child “Darling.”
This is all very relevant because our heroine Lady Ophelia Lyttleto, who is a horrible snub, always makes Drake feel like he is beneath her station. Ophelia belittles Drake and goes out of her way to humiliate him, although he is her dearest friend Grace’s brother. Grace and Drake grew up loving each other as brother and sister and have a special bond. In the previous book, Grace and Ophelia sneak into the gaming hall that Drake manages quite often. This book reminded me of Overboard with Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell (one of my favorite movies). Just like the movie Ophelia loses her memory. Drake happens to be near the river when he sees her fall in.

Once he retrieves her and takes her to his home Ophelia has no memory of who she is. Drake can’t help but have a little fun with her. He tells her that she is his servant. Although it sounds terrible Ophelia was really so horrible and such a snub that it was gratifying to see her put in such a humble situation. Ophelia (prior to losing her memory) goes out of her way to be rude to Drake, calls him “boy” and always sends him to get her things as if he were a servant.

Drake intends to only have a little fun and a little revenge with Ophelia. He intends to have her in his home as a servant for a day and then he will tell her the truth. When Drake returns to the club he learns that Ophelia’s brother is very indebted and he worries that Ophelia’s life might be in danger. He thinks that someone might have intended to dump Ophelia in the river.

Drake decides that it won’t do any harm to keep her as his servant, her duties include everything from dusting to washing his back. There were some parts that were really comical but there were also very tender parts. Ophelia can’t remember that she is a lady but she does know that she and Drake had a past. Drake slowly realizes that it’s only a matter of time before she remembers who she is or before her family begins to question her whereabouts (her brother believes that she is with their uncle and aunt.

While Drake is having his fun with Ophelia she tries to remember who she was but at the same time “re-learn” all her duties as a servant. She also befriends the maid that works next door to Drake something she would never have done before losing her memory.

Inevitably two things happen Drake and Ophelia fall in love and she regains her memory. During these big events Ophelia’s big dark secret comes to light and she is able to start her life again. I can’t say how much I loved both these characters, although Ophelia was horrible at the beginning, seeing her transformation was very beautiful. Drake was such a fantastic hero, he was also wounded by his past. I loved this book, I could not put it down. I loved seeing characters from the previous books and I know that they will be a part of the next series. I loved and highly recommend this beautiful book about two very beautiful people who despite themselves fall madly in love with one another.

ARC Review: Tempting the CEO by Angela Claire

Tempting the CEO is the first book that I have ever read by Angela Claire and I had no idea what to expect when starting this one. I really enjoy Entangled Publishing's Brazen line though and the blurb really sold me on this story. While I did enjoy parts of this story, I felt that overall this one just didn't deliver on the promise of what could have been a really good story. This one was really short and I think that was a lot of the problem for me.

When Angie finds herself locked out of her hotel room in nothing but a towel, her sexy neighbor offers to help her out. The attraction between them is instant and they decide to give in to their passion. But Angie leaves the next morning before they ever exchange any information on who they really are. When Angie shows up to her business meeting, she is shocked to find out that they CEO of the company trying to buy her client's business is none other than the guy she spent the previous night with. Jed wants to spend more time with Angie in bed, but Angie is determined to keep things professional now that she knows who he is. But Jed isn't willing to give up easily and is determined to get Angie to spend more time with him.

I liked Jed. He was sexy and in control, he was used to getting his way and didn't want to take no for an answer. He was funny and charming, and I really liked how relentlessly he pursued Angie. Angie on the other hand was hard for me to warm up to. She ran hot and cold, and I just was never able to connect with her character. I kept waiting for things to click with her and they just never did. While I felt the attraction between Angie and Jed, I never was able to really see the emotional connection between the two of them. I felt like their relationship was too rushed and that we just didn't get to see the feelings develop between them. I wanted to see more of them together, rather than Angie fighting it so much. She seemed to constantly change her mind on what she wanted, and it felt like a switch would just randomly flip and it was hard to keep track of what was going on with her.

I did however like the playfulness between Jed and Angie, and they did seem to hit it off right away. I just wanted to see more and see something deeper for them. I also had a tough time with the ending and felt like it was pretty abrupt. It just felt unfinished and I wanted more. While this book was a quick and easy read, I just wasn't wowed with the story. I thought that it was good not great, and wasn't anything new or memorable to me. I also felt like it didn't pack the normal amount of heat that I have come to enjoy and expect from the Brazen line. If you are looking for a short story with a bit of steam and some witty moments, you might consider giving this one a shot. But if you are looking for a strong emotional connection and commitment, this one might not be for you.

ARC Review: Make It Right by Megan Erickson

Make it Right is a really cute story. I think it was classified as New Adult and I can see it that way because it deals with people in college but it was a lot less angsty than other New Adult novels I have read, so if you are looking for something in the younger age group but that is different from all the other New Adults out there, Make It Right is for you.

Lea and Max are like oil and water. Everytime he is near her he seems to insult her, ignore her or make fun of her. Somehow it just never works out when they are together. But Max does like her and he hates that he can’t seem to get the right words out around her, he never has any problems with any other girls he meets. Lea was involved in an accident in her teen years and it has left her scarred and she walks with a limp. Because of this she likes to be in control and being around Max makes her feel like she has less control. So of course they end up thrown together teaching a self-defense class because of a rash of robberies on campus that has hit too close to home for Lea. While teaching together they start to gel better and Lea sees redeeming qualities in Max where she didn’t see them before. Max starts feeling protective of Lea but not in a “you are a helpless female way” but in a supportive wonderful way.

At this point the chemistry explodes off the pages. You knew it was there before with their bickering but when they start to get along it comes through more fully. I enjoyed watching their relationship develop. I also enjoyed seeing Kat and Alec from the first book in this book and I can’t wait to go back and read Make It Count.
The storyline was intriguing with the robberies thrown in as a way to get Max and Lea together. I also loved the relationship aspect. Of course there is a conflict and I felt that was a great addition to the story. And all-in-all I enjoyed reading this book. It’s more light and fun than most New Adults, but there are some histories that must be dealt with and some angst included, but overall it felt a lot lighter than most books in this genre which is nice.

If you are looking for a fun and serious mixed together with an interesting romance then Make It Right is just for you. And though it is the second book in the Bowler University series, it can be read as a stand-alone. Alec and Kat from Make It Count are in the book, but down deep these are romances, so the fact that they get together is not a surprise. I think this is a great series and I will be reading the first book soon and the third book when it comes out.

ARC Review: Rules of a Proper Governess by Jennifer Ashley

I am no stranger to Jennifer Ashley, I love this series the Mackenzies & McBrides are such an eccentric fun family I have enjoyed all the books I have read; all but book 6 (The Wicked Deeds of Daniel Mackenzie) and the novella in between six and seven (Scandal and the Duchess). Rules for a Proper Governess is no different, you can never tell a Mackenzie or a McBride to do something the conventional way because it just isn’t done. I have been waiting for Sinclair’s book since his first appearance in Ainsley and Cameron’s book (The Many Sins of Lord Cameron) book three and here we are in book 7, yes it was worth the wait.

It has been seven years since Sinclair McBride’s wife died of a fever leaving him to raise their two children by himself. He hasn’t been doing a very good job at it or at least he thinks he hasn’t. His daughter is an introvert and his son is so wild they can’t keep a governess. On day after a particularly easy case when Sinclair is wallowing in his misery asking his wife to give him a sign that he should move on a beautiful young lady bumps into him and suddenly his heart feels like it’s beating again and that his watch is now missing.

Roberta Fraiser, or Bertie to her friends, is forced by her abusive father to pick pocket the man who just had his best mate arrested even if it was her friend who was set free and the true guilty party was arrested. She successfully picks his pocket but has to quickly flee because he promptly notices and gives chase. That is just how they meet. Once Bertie gets a taste of Sinclair she cannot easily let go, she becomes a little stalker-ish and follows him home. Due to an inadequate governess Bertie is left in charge of the children. Cat and Andrew take to Bertie like no one else and everyone in the family already likes Bertie also.

There is practically no sexual tension between Sinclair and Bertie but their really didn’t need to be. Sinclair had no resistance or control whenever the Cockney beauty was near. They didn’t immediately start having sex but it didn’t take long. The conflict in the story goes back to Sinclair’s first wife and someone threatening to reveal her checkered past and her nasty brother from taking his children. It was an easy coming together for the two but the story was still very entertaining to read, I loved it.
