Growing up amid the glorious backdrops and winter wonderlands of the Pacific Northwest has given Rebecca fantastic scenery and adventures to weave into her stories. She resides in the wild north with her husband, children, and extended family who inspire her every day--or at the very least give her plenty of characters to write about.

How is it writing romance in two different genres? Is it challenging or exciting?
I really enjoy writing in two genres—it’s nice to switch gears and breathe once in a while. The paranormals are a bit darker, and there’s a lot of fun to be found with the lighter cowboy contemporaries. But there are similarities in my series’ such as family ties, spunky heroines, and over-the-top Alpha males. Whether the guy is a vampire or a cowboy lawyer, he knows what he wants.
What are your favorite types of heroes to read and write about?
I think I may have already given this one away. I like the tough, wounded, Alpha-male type of hero who’d step in front of a careering SUV to save his woman. These guys only love once, and it’s completely. Of course, they’re possessive, protective, and need some smoothing out by a feisty heroine.
What are some of your favorite characteristics in a hero?
I like the guy who’d literally give up his life to save the people he loves. While I love romance, and the interaction between the hero and the heroine, it seems like I also love to explore family ties. The hero in AGAINST THE WALL has two brothers and a sister—and while they mess with each other (and once in a while tackle each other to the ground), they’d run through fire to save each other. That family connection gets extended to the heroine, who’s alone, and it’s nice to see that happen.
What do you find so appealing about writing an-opposites-attract story?
This is such a great question! I guess an-opposites-attract story is open to both tension and humor, which are a great combination. I love old movies, and there’s nothing like watching Hepburn and Tracy battle it out in a courtroom before battling it out in the bedroom. Plus, my husband and I are total opposites, so I can relate. Tony is an athletic, outdoorsy, 6’5 Italian, and I’m a 5’4 Irish klutz who likes to write. Romance should be fun and sexy, and opposites make that happen.

ReplyDeleteI think they may strike the initial spark, but I feel there has to be some common ground as well. The disparities will start to rub eventually.
ReplyDeleteFirst off, I LOVED Against the Wall and can't wait for Under the Covers. Secondly, I DO think opposites attract especially when they do good for each other. For example, I'm high strung and anxious. My hubby is laid back and calm. Together we work well together!
