Interview with Author Alison DeLaine and Giveaway

Meet Alison DeLaine, author of A Gentleman 'Til Midnight.

Alison DeLaine lives in rural Arizona, where she can often be found driving a dented old pickup truck out to her mining claim in the desert. First off, can you tell us a bit about you?
Sure! I’m a native Washingtonian who moved away from Seattle years ago to escape the gray drizzle, and now I happily enjoy the Arizona sunshine. I have many more interests than time to indulge in them… If I had my way, I would spend my time doing crafts, gardening, and – as my bio mentions – gold mining. I absolutely love being out in the desert, and prospecting is a great excuse to get out there among the cacti. Plus, I usually find at least a few specks of the shiny stuff in my gold pan!

Did you always want to be a writer?
The answer is… Maybe. I’m not one of those people who’s been writing stories ever since I could hold a pen. But when I was in elementary school, one of my favorite places was the local plant nursery, and I remember writing a story in which the characters were plants and flowers at the nursery. I think the main character’s name was Daisy. (Gee, how creative!) I didn’t really get the urge to write a novel until I was in my early twenties. I was a voracious reader of historical romances, and at some point it occurred to me, “Hey! Maybe I could write one of those!”

What kind of writer are you? Panster or Plotter?
Both. I would love to be a plotter – it would be so much easier to write if I knew exactly *what* to write. But that doesn’t work, no matter how many weeks and months I spend trying to plot out the story in advance. I’ve tried charts, index cards, sticky notes… No matter how carefully I try to plan, it’s only once I start writing that the idea faucet comes on and the really great stuff starts to occur to me. But then, as I’m working, I pause a lot to assess and brainstorm and map out as much as I can see at that point. It’s a very messy process, and that old adage about sausage totally applies.

Where do your ideas come from?
Who knows? It’s a little scary sometimes! (“Did I really think of THAT??”) Hopefully nobody imagines it’s from personal experience. ;)

A la Twitter style, can you describe your book (or series) in 140 characters or less.
He felt magnificent, and she hated him. It’s ships, sexual chemistry & society scorned as regret turns to relentless passion--and true love.

What are some of your favorite kinds of stories to read?
I like all kinds of stories! Well, let me qualify that… All kinds of romance stories. I shamelessly confess that I don’t usually read outside the romance umbrella. (Okay, yes, I do read the news. I’m talking fiction here.) My favorite stories are ones where the romantic tension between the hero and heroine is so thick you could cut it with a knife. I love it when the author makes me wait for the romantic payoff until the very, very end.

Do you have a favorite book and if so what is it?
Well, I’ll just say that yes, I do, and it’s The Outsider by Penelope Williamson. I first read it back in the ‘90s, and I’ve re-read it numerous times, and to this day if I take it off the shelf and open it to any random page, I am instantly hooked all over again. Her writing is so brilliant, the emotions are so real, and the romantic tension between the two characters is through the roof.

Last question, are you working on anything right now?
Yes! I’m busy writing the third book in this series. It’s called A Promise by Daylight, and the hero and heroine are characters who will be very familiar to those who’ve read A Gentleman ‘til Midnight. I’m having a lot of fun with the story!
