He sets down your résumé. “So you’ve heard rumors about The Justiss Alliance, and you think you want to join us. You found our headquarters in Miami, so you’ve already passed one test: tenacity. We don’t advertise in the Yellow Pages, and we don’t have a website. Word gets out because we’re good. Sometimes government agencies tap us to go undercover when they can’t get clearance or permission to do so themselves. They know we’re willing to go outside the bounds of the law to find evidence, figure out who the bad guy is, and even save a life when necessary. Private individuals come to us when they’ve run out of doors on which to knock and people on whom to call.
“We have a predominantly male staff, though we welcome a woman who can meet our requirements. One client joked that one of those requirements must be that the applicant be smoking hot, but we assure you that it’s entirely a coincidence that our team members are just that.
“Military experience is a plus. It means you know how to operate as a team. That you can handle weapons. And that you have the guts to use them. During your employment with us, you will likely face down a bad guy aiming a gun at you. Good judgment is as important as good aim.
“You have to be comfortable going undercover. Sometimes posing as part of a couple. Things can get extremely sticky, as some of my operatives have discovered. Pretending to have sex in the bathroom of a biker bar, for instance. Sharing hotel rooms. Hanging around at a nude resort. Even possibly posing as a married couple getting therapy at a BDSM club. You’d better be comfortable with your body … and with the opposite sex.
“Having said that, we discourage intimate relationships with our clients and between our staff. That’s not going so well …
Being in great physical shape is paramount, because you never know what you’ll be forced to do. In theory, you could be running through the woods at night with people playing a game of canned hunt … and you’re the prey. You might have to jump on top of a van and hold on for dear life while the driver’s trying to throw you. Diving off cliffs, also a distinct possibility. You need to be able to swim in pitch dark, hold your breath underwater for long periods of time—while fighting off bikers, say—and run great distances.
“And finally, you need to be willing to lay your life on the line to save another’s. When you join TJA, you are committing to an ideal. An honorable duty. A dangerous job. You must be willing to make choices based on the greater good, not your own. You might kill someone. You might die. At the end of the day, you know you did what was right. Just. And necessary.
