Keeping her safe is crucial. Guarding his heart is impossible.
Haunted by his time in Iraq, former soldier Schwartz Patton goes off the grid, retreating deep into Montana’s untamed wilderness. Now, ten years into his self-imposed solitude, his brother tracks him down and asks for a favor. A woman is in danger, and she needs help…and Schwartz is the only one who can protect her.
Designer-loving city girls like Janelle Keebler don’t belong in the wilderness. Unless, of course, they’re witnesses to a murder by their psycho drug-trafficking ex-husbands. Still, Janelle can’t help the immediate physical response she has to her sexy-as-sin protector that leaves her wanting more than she could have ever imagined. Even if he doesmake terrible coffee…
Every word, every touch, every kiss ignites a need Schwartz thought he’d lost forever. He can’t stop the desperate attraction simmering between him and Janelle, even if he wanted to. Even if it means it could get them both killed.
“You were gone a long time,” she said. “Did you have trouble finding something?”
He frowned, not wanting to admit he’d been pacing around the damn store avoiding the inevitable moment he’d have to go back and face her and accept the fact that he’d probably never touch her again. “Not everything,” he said, poking the meat loaf with his fork but not taking a bite. “I got the milk.”
“No cond—coffee filters?”
“They were all out of cond—coffee filters.”
“All out?” She frowned. “I swear I saw a box when we were there the other day. They were right up by the register.”
He shifted on the bench, not wanting to admit he’d stared at the same damn box of condoms and thought about having her again. Maybe just one more time before she walked out of his life forever. Instead, he’d forced himself to walk away. “The box was damaged. Can’t risk having holes in coffee filters.”
Across the table, Gordy wiped his chin with a napkin.
“You like the kind with the pointy tip, or the big wide ones?”
Schwartz blinked. “Uh— ”
Laverne beamed. “Oooh, I like the new ones they’re making now with the flavor-enhancing micro-perforations.”
Schwartz dared a glance at Janelle and saw that her face had gone from pink to bright red. She opened her mouth to say something, but Laverne cut her off.
“You know, I just love the ones with the extra-large base. The box says it makes for a deeper, bolder experience.”
Janelle choked on her drink, and Schwartz turned to see her sputtering into a glass that looked suspiciously full of moonshine.
“How much of that have you had?” he asked.
“Not enough,” she said.
An unexpected catch…
NBA star Mike Giamaria doesn’t mix basketball with love. Ever. Then Mike meets Tori Williams, his cute, quirky new neighbor who seems hell bent on refurbishing her death trap of a house on her own. When she falls from her roof and into his arms, Mike knows he’s just caught a whole heap of trouble.
Trouble sums up Tori’s life. Despite her academic success, no one believes she can take care of herself-not her family, not her ex-boyfriend. She’s determined to live her life on her own terms, and if that includes a hot summer fling with the super-sexy athlete next door, so much the better.
But when Tori’s around, Mike can’t keep his mind on basketball. He wants…more. And to his horror, not just more time on the court. When training starts, it’s game over-it has to be-unless Tori can convince Mike that love doesn’t belong on the sidelines.
"I was wrong," she said as she slowly stretched her legs out. Mmmmm, she felt amazing. Her head dropped against the desk as she looked at him, all big and stunning even handcuffed to a chair. Pink cuffs on the right, leather cuffs on the left. Who knew that could look so sexy? "I thought I wanted to be in complete control, but..." She shook her head. "It's more fun to play together."
He lifted his arms. "So uncuff me and I'll show you--"
Ding dong.
She looked up. So did he.
"Electrician?" he asked.
She shook her head. "Not until tomorrow."
"Oh. Then–"
Ding dong.
Suddenly she remembered. "Oh shit. It's Wednesday."
"It's Thursday."
"I know. But he's just like me. Can't keep track of time." She snatched up the key, her mind working overtime. If she was right, he'd start banging on the door in about three seconds.
Mike was already working on the leather cuff. "Who is it?"
She couldn't get the damned key past the pink feathers and into the lock. He was moving too much, so she abandoned him to pull on her shorts.
Bang bang bang.
Yup. There he was.
She fumbled zipping up her cutoffs. She glanced at Mike, her sense of the ridiculous making her giggle. At least he'd gotten one cuff off and was now scanning the floor for the other key. She tried to tell him she had it, but it was too late.
She heard the front door open. Oh hell. Only one person had the other key to her house. She grabbed her tee, pulling it down.
"Tori? Honey, are you here?"
She straightened the shirt then fluffed out her hair. "Coming, daddy!" she called.
Mike's head shot up. "Daddy?" he mouthed.
She nodded, then dashed out the door, nearly tripping as she flew down the stairs. "Hi there!" she called, hugging her father tight.
Then there were the usual pleasantries. The how are you, where's mom, what's going on type questions. It wasn't until they'd wandered into the kitchen together that she thought to wonder what the hell was taking Mike so long. He couldn't be hiding up there, could he?
So she went to the bottom of the stairs. "Mike?" she called. "Come on down. I want you to meet my father." Silence. "Mike?"
"There someone up there?" her father asked, coming to join her.
"Yeah," she said. "My neighbor. You'll like him."
The two of them climbed the stairs and headed for the office. Surely he’d had plenty of time to get himself together by now.
"Mike?" she repeated, then they rounded the corner to see fully into the office.
Which is when she realized that she still had the key to the pink fuzzy cuffs in her hand.
Sometimes the biggest risk is playing it safe.
Gen Richards is tired of living down to her family’s expectation of the helpless blind girl. Resurrecting her high-school bucket list that begins with “kiss a total stranger” seems just the thing until she finds herself in a panty-melting lip lock with her big brother’s best friend.
Chance Anderson thrives on adrenaline, but Genny’s the one risk he’s not willing to take. His recklessness a decade ago landed her in the hospital and ejected him from her life. He’s bad for her and everyone knows it—especially her big brother.
Chance reluctantly helps Gen complete her bucket list in order to keep her out of trouble. Running through a freezing fountain, playing spin the bottle while fending off a mad horde of stinging insects, and skinny dipping with homicidal attack swans don’t hold a candle to the real danger: falling for the one person he can never have.
He pulled her free of the fence and held her against him until she was steady. “Pond is about fifty feet straight ahead,” he whispered in her ear, sending shocks of energy through her entire body. “Are you sure you want to go through with this?”
She crept along behind him with her fingers though his belt loops, fighting back giggles. “Are you kidding? I’ve waited ten years to do this. Are you going to chicken out on me?”
“Never!”
“Shhhhhh.”
He chuckled and stopped, causing her to bump into him full-body from behind with an oof.
“What the heck?” she whispered. “It’s like the blind leading the blind here.”
“I’m going to show you precisely how well I can see if you mash your breasts against me again.” He headed off once more with her in tow.
“Well, then, warn me before you stop.” A rustling came from somewhere on the right. “What was that?” she whispered, moving her grip to the belt loops nearest the front of his pants to get closer to him.
“Stopping,” he said, straightening from his tiptoe crouch.
Still holding him tight, she buried her face in the back of his shirt. “There’s something in the bushes or weeds to our right, and I’m scared it’s going to jump out at us.”
He cleared his throat. “Honey, there’s something in my pants, and if you don’t turn loose of where you’re holding me, it might jump out at us, too.”
“Oh.” She giggled and released him. “Sorry. I’m kind of excited.”
“Clearly, so am I.”
