My First Love with Carrie Ann Ryan

Carrie Ann Ryan is the New York Times and USA Today bestselling author of contemporary and paranormal romance. Her works include the Montgomery Ink, Redwood Pack, Talon Pack, and Gallagher Brothers series, which have sold over 3.0 million books worldwide. She started writing while in graduate school for her advanced degree in chemistry and hasn’t stopped since. Carrie Ann has written over sixty novels and novellas with more in the works. When she’s not writing about bearded tattooed men or alpha wolves that need to find their mates, she’s reading as much as she can and exploring the world of baking and gourmet cooking.

I could talk about my first love in my heart, but I’m not ready to talk about my late husband…so instead, I’m going to talk about my first crush. My first idea of love.

They are, in reality, two people. One, JTT (Jonathan Taylor Thomas lol), the boy almost my age, just a few years older, but the one with smiles and laughs and THAT HAIR. Then he was Simba, then he was a teen heart throb. Then he became the teen who cared about the environment. The one with the non-shaggy hair but now with spikes. He was everything to little girl me.

But…I really want to talk about my other first crush. Luke Perry. I’m writing this the day after he died due to complications from a severe stroke and I don’t know how to put my first crush into words. He was everything to me. Yes, I was four when he first appeared on screen at Dylan McKay, but as we were stationed in Japan, we couldn’t watch live anyway.

I was probably far too young at eight when I first watched the show, catching up years later thanks to AFN (Air Force Network) and repeats. But I fell for him. I fell for that bad boy who GRIEVED when he lost his wife. That Porsche scene in the rain will forever haunt my dreams. He made me swoon before I knew what swooning was. And when I was that preteen girl later, I fell for his kindness. He READ BOOKS. He helped others. He brooded. He was covered in grease. He surfed. He VOTED (thanks to Donna Martin). He swaggered. He did it ALL. He was my crush before I found boybands. Before I knew what a crush was.

Brandon never was my thing. Mostly because I was surrounded by boys like him in elementary and middle school. The ones that didn’t understand that girls had to fight twice as hard to show they were smart. (Andrea, anyone?) But Dylan didn’t care about any of that (wish in retrospect was an issue lol). He had his issues, but he was my first bad boy.

And then later, when Luke Perry showed up on Riverdale, he was a DAD. Growly, a little dirty, a little weary, and a whole lot MORE. He held that grace he had as Dylan and added to it. Watching him and Skeet is the reason I watched Riverdale. My Scream Evil-Doer and my First Bad Boy. As I’m thirty-two, I find myself in the middle of the two generations on screen and yet drawn to my first.

But Luke Perry and JTT were my first inspirations. My first heroes that I wanted to write. I’ve written a few Dylans in my time, but he was my first.

My first love…and the love that led to many more book and screen loves.

From NYT bestselling author Carrie Ann Ryan, comes a brand new series where second chances don’t come often, and overcoming an unexpected loss means breaking everything you knew.

I fell for Cameron Connolly at the wrong time. And when he left, I thought my life was over. But then, after the worst happened, I truly understood what that phrase meant. Now, he’s not ready for a second chance, and I’m not offering one. Though given that our families have been forced together after losing one of our own, I know there’s no turning back. Not this time. Not again. Not when it comes to Cameron.

~~

I never wanted to hurt Violet Knight, but there were reasons I had to leave all those years ago—not that she'd believe me if I told her what they were. I not only left her, I also left my foster brothers. Honestly, I didn’t want to come back to Denver to help run my father’s failing brewery. But when it comes to my brothers, I know I’ll find a way to make it work. Perhaps I’ll even earn Violet’s forgiveness and face the connection we both thought long forgotten in the process. Because I wanted her then, but now I know I need her. I just hope she needs me.
