December Book Subscription Box Unpacking

For December I received only one box, the Book Candy Box. I skipped my December Bookworm Box for the second month in a row. As much as I love getting it and helping out a great cause each month, it is a little pricey and I needed to use the money elsewhere for the last few months. I was really happy with the books that I got in my Book Candy Box though and I have to say that this is my favorite box from them yet! While I was really excited about the books I got, I was a bit disappointed in the swag included this month again. There wasn't a lot, and what there was wasn't a very good selection as it was mostly bookmarks and cards. I wish that there was a bit more of a selection when it comes to the swag, though I do still love getting everything that they send.
The Book Candy Box is a subscription box service that offers a few different options as far as which box you would like to purchase. These boxes are secured on a month by month basis, so you need to purchase one each month as it does not auto-renew. Prices vary per box selected. The Book Candy Box store is open from the 1st day of the month until the 15th day of the month for boxes shipping the next month. (IE: To purchase a February Box, you need to order between January 1st-15th.) The contents of your box will vary, depending on which box you select. The options are as follows: Option 1: One Signed Book. This box is $12.00 plus shipping. Option 2: 1 Signed Book, Swag, and a Signed Model Photo for that month's featured model. This box is $20.00 plus shipping. Option 3: 2 Signed Books and Swag for $22.00 plus shipping. Option 4: 2 Signed Books, Swag, and Signed Model Photo for $30.00 plus shipping. Option 5: Flavor of the Month Box Includes 1 Signed Book, Swag, and 1-4 oz Specialty Jar of Cheesecake from Lick Your Lips. This box is $22.00 plus shipping. (each month the flavor will differ, with customers being told which flavor is to be featured in the newsletter from The Book Candy Box.) Though you know what items you will be getting, the titles and authors are a surprise each month. The only thing that is not a secret, is who the model featured each month is as they announce that on their facebook page. The one thing that you should be aware of though is that while each book is signed, sometimes it is a sticker or label (bookplate) rather than a signature on the page itself. The great thing about The Book Candy Box is that because they are open for a limited amount of days and order books based on signups, they do not run out of boxes and they are available to customers throughout the entire sales period. There is no waiting for spots to open up or for others to cancel. As long as you order between the 1st and 15th, you are guaranteed a box.

December Book Candy Box

The Book Candy Box that I received in December included a signed Dirty English by Ilsa Madden-Mills and a signed Walking Among the Cherry Trees by H. D'Agostino. Swag in this months box was a signed postcard from Andie M. Long, postcard from Ilsa Madden-Mills, RAK card from Annalie Walker, bookmark from Carian Cole, bookmark from Kaylee Ryan, and a Pen from Sloan Johnson.

Dirty English by Ilsa Madden-Mills

A scarred fighter.
A girl with rules.
One night of unbridled passion.

There are three things you need to know about Elizabeth Bennett: she’s smart as a whip, always in control, and lives by a set of carefully crafted rules. She’s learned the hard way that people you love the most always hurt you in the end.

But then she meets Declan Blay, the new neighbor at her apartment complex.

A tattooed British street fighter, he’s the campus bad boy she’s supposed to avoid, but when he saves her from a frat party gone bad, all her rules about sex and love fly out the window.

She gives him one night of unbridled passion, but he longs for more.

With only a cardboard-thin wall separating their bedrooms, he dreams of possessing the vulnerable girl next door forever.

One night. Two damaged hearts. The passion of a lifetime.

*a modern love story inspired by Pride and Prejudice*

I was really hoping that I would get this box after I saw that it would be included in some in a preview that Book Candy Box did on facebook. I had previously read and reviewed the book, and really enjoyed the story. Not only did I enjoy the book, but I really loved the cover and wanted this one for my shelf! This is definitely a book worth checking out, and I could not have been more excited to see it in my box this month!

Walking Among the Cherry Trees by H. D'Agostino

Taylor Cook was the last thing Morgan McGregor expected to find when she stepped off the train at Cherryville station to spend the summer with her grandmother, Virginia. She didn’t know that the boy who befriended her would one day fill her heart with both joy and pain.
First love can be magical. It can reach inside you and grip your heart with a force that you never see coming, and can’t deny. It’s powerful and sometimes debilitating, but most of all… it can break you in ways you never thought possible.

How do you recover when the one the person you thought would always be there, pushes you away at the time they’re needed the most? How do you move on with your life and forget the boy who stole your heart all those years ago? How do you go back to that place knowing that seeing him will cause your careful façade to crack into a million pieces? It’s simple you can’t, but sometimes you have to.

When Morgan gets the news that her grandmother’s passed away and she’s the heir to her estate, she hardens heart in preparation of going back to face him. What happens when she steps off that train again? Will the feelings she’s worked so hard to forget come rushing back and threaten to drown her? Will he even still be there?

Walking Among the Cherry Trees is the first book in The Cook Brothers Series.

H. D'Agostino is a new to me author, but I absolutely love this gorgeous cover! I had never heard of this book before, though I had heard of the author. So I was really excited to get this in my box. After reading the blurb, I can't wait to read this story. This is exactly the type of book I would choose for myself, but might not have heard about without receiving it in this box. Walking Among the Cherry Trees has been added to the top of my TBR pile, and I am really hoping that I get a chance to read this one soon!

Tell us what you think about the monthly book box craze. Any of these books on your TBR pile? Are you currently subscribed to any boxes? Are there any that you are 'dying' to subscribe to? Leave us a note about what you think or if there are any boxes that you think we should check out. =)

Bubbles and Books Subscription Box Review and Giveaway

I was really excited to get this Bubbles and Books Box when we were offered the chance to review it, because I had never seen anything like this before. While book boxes are all the rage right now, this is the first that I have seen to offer bath products as well. Who doesn't love to pamper themselves a bit and also get some great new books? I have always been a sucker for yummy smelling soaps, so the fact that I can combine that with my love for books was something that grabbed my attention right away. I think that these boxes are actually a really great value for the money as well. Not only is shipping included (within the US), but the books are full size novels as are the bars of soap. These bars of handcrafted soap as well as the indie books can get quite expensive when purchased on their own, so to get them in this reasonably priced box was something I thought was a really good deal!

Unlike some of the other book boxes available, the books I received were unsigned. While this isn't a problem for me, I feel like potential subscribers should know that upfront so they aren't expecting signed books. These are indie published books with beautiful covers, and any paranormal romance reader will enjoy getting these novels for their shelves.

I wish you could smell this box! When I first opened the box, I couldn't believe how good everything smelled! I immediately wanted to go take a shower or bath and get into these amazing smelling products. Not only did they smell great, but they are so pretty.

I will say that the only thing that was a bit of a drawback for me was the genre of the books. While I do like paranormal romance, I read mostly contemporary and new adult romance books. I am excited to be introduced to some new authors and books that I might not have heard of, but I would love it if the boxes came with a mix of sub-categories within the romance genre, or that Bubbles and Books offered boxes based on your preferred genre.
Bubbles and Books is a subscription book box that also gives subscribers handcrafted soaps each month. They currently have two options for subscribers to choose from, the first option is The Luxe Box. This is one book and one Soap and runs $19.95 per month. The second option is The Shifters Do It Better Box, and contains two novels and two soaps for $34.95 per month. Shipping in the US is free. Once you sign up for a subscription, your box will auto-renew every month until you cancel. So there is no need to try and remember to secure your box each month. Right now Bubbles and Books only offer paranormal (shifter) romance novels in their boxes. The soaps included in the boxes are handcrafted, small batch artisan soaps and aren't ones you will find in stores. These boxes make great gifts for your paranormal romance loving friends, or if you want to treat yourself a little each month.

November Shifters Do It Better Box

Included in my Shifters Do It Better Box: Awakened by Senna Tate (unsigned), Dragon's Melody by Ophelia Bell (unsigned), Black Raspberry Vanilla Soap from Rock Bottom Soap Co., Pear Vanilla Soap from Bee Butter, Pumpkin Pie Soap from Melen Soap Shop, Sleeping Dragons bookmark with dragon charm from Ophelia Bell, Hidden Gems Romance bookmark, cards with information on each of the soap companies and their products, business card from Bubbles and Books letting you know who prepared your box and where to follow them, Samples of Goat Milk Soap, Sweet Love Soap and Black Soap from Melen Soap Shop, and Samples of Sweet Pea Soap and Pear Vanilla Lotion from Bee Butter.

Awakened by Senna Tate

Gemma Fellings a recently canned school teacher, is looking for a fresh start. She’s never allowed herself to have friends, relationships, or even fun. Carson Sanchez has an abundance of friends, but he’s plagued by the skeletons in his closet and no one can help him escape his past.

A chance encounter leaves them both fantasizing, but they never even exchanged names!

When Gemma’s new friend – Carson’s sister – goes missing, the two find themselves thrust together again. It can’t be a coincidence, can it?

The strange happenings in town are much bigger than Gemma or Carson imagined and they’ll need to use their connection to each other to harness new paranormal abilities in order to save the ones they love.

Dragon's Melody by Ophelia Bell

All or nothing.

It was supposed to be a simple job transfer interview, but it was far from simple. After the most mind-blowing ‘interview’ of Melody’s life, she signs a contract with a gorgeous man named Skye, who she believes is much more than he seems. The trouble is, Skye's assistant Garen is every bit as enticing as his boss. Garen is just as inhumanly gorgeous and just as hungry for what Melody has to offer.

But the entire endeavor goes south when she finds herself falling for both elusive men and their otherworldly charms. Melody never considered the possibility of love. She rejected romance for most of her life, because love was her enemy. Love left her mother wanting and left Melody nothing but loneliness for two decades.

The realization that she has to choose between them sends her running scared. She refuses to choose, but the only other option is to refuse and risk even worse heartbreak. Will she follow her heart or lose it all?

Garen and Skye follow, too consumed by love to do anything but compromise for Melody's sake. In the arms of them both, she makes her choice—the choice Fate intended all along.

The Book Candy Box store is open from the 1st day of the month until the 15th day of the month for boxes shipping the next month. November Book Candy Box

The Book Candy Box that I received in November included a signed Wild Pitch by Sloan Johnson and a signed Something For the Pain by Victoria Ashley (this one had a bookplate). Swag in this months box was a MJ Carnal bookmark, MJ Carnal door hanger, A. Giannoccaro bookmark, A. Giannoccaro signed postcard, MJ Fields signed rak card and an eye candy bookstore business card.

Wild Pitch by Sloan Johnson

There’s never been any question in Sean Tucker’s mind that he’d do whatever it took to make it to the major leagues and be one of the best pitchers of his time. The day he acknowledged to himself that he was gay was also the day he vowed to stay in the closet in order to chase his dreams. The problem is, he never counted on Mason Atley.

Sean showed rookie short stop Mason Atley the ropes, both on the field and off. The two forged a friendship which continued as both of them moved through the ranks of the farm system and into the majors. Unfortunately, there’s always been one secret Mason never felt he could share with Sean. Until now.

For seven years, Sean lived with the fact that he loved a man who would never reciprocate. When Mason admits that he’s always known he’s bisexual but has never allowed himself to pursue a relationship with a man, will Sean be able to put aside his reservations about starting a relationship with the friend he’d always assumed was straight? And more importantly, will they be able to find a way to stay together when their careers keep them apart more than they can be together?

I have actually been dying to read this series. I have seen a lot of good things and I love sports romance stories. Over the past few years I have become quite a fan of the M/M genre, so when you add that to a sports romance this is exactly the kind of book I enjoy reading. Not ready to let go of the high from my team winning the World Series (Go Royals!), I can't wait to read this book. While this had been on my TBR list for awhile now, getting it in my box has definitely bumped it up to the top. Wild Pitch is the first book in the Homeruns Series, with each book being a standalone.

Something For the Pain by Victoria Ashley

Tempting, inked and highly addictive. Alex is all that and more…

I’ve made a lot of mistakes – ones I’m not proud of, and definitely ones that have left their marks both mentally and physically.

Things got lonely; I got lost in my own fucked up mind and in the end it left me fucked out of my mind and unable to fight – or at least win. That life’s over for me and I’ve moved on.

Six months into tattooing at Blue’s and already I’m the most wanted and sought out tattooist. My biggest clientele consists of women.

They come into the shop, end up in my bed and we both come out happy. It’s been my release since I’ve stopped fighting. It’s become part of the “new” me.

But when Tripp reappears in my life, I can’t deny the fact that I would do anything for that girl.

So when she asks me to move in with her and her ‘boyfriend’ – our other childhood friend – I never expected for things to get so fucked up and twisted that I would find myself only more attracted to her by each passing second or wanting to protect her from everything that isn’t me.

I have worked so hard over the years to suppress my feelings for her but when I find out that her and Lucas have been having an open relationship, I have the strong urge to rip his heart straight from his chest – to destroy the very thing that keeps him breathing.

What I didn’t expect was for Lucas to ask what he did. For him to ask me to do the one thing I have secretly longed for since I was old enough to know what the need was. The second thing I never expected was the look of need that I saw in Tripp’s eyes when he asked.

One night of free passion could change our lives forever.

I never said that was a good thing either...

Purchase: | Amazon | Kindle | B&N | iTunes |

While I haven't read this book from Victoria Ashley, I have read books by her before and really enjoyed them. I have heard that this is her best book yet from a lot of people, so I am really excited to start this one. Something for the Pain is actually the second book in the Pain series, but each book can be read as standalones as the characters are interconnected.

Tell us what you think about the monthly book box craze. Any of these books on your TBR pile? Are you currently subscribed to any boxes? Are there any that you are 'dying' to subscribe to? Leave us a note about what you think or if there are any boxes that you think we should check out. =)

October Book Subscription Box Unpacking

Another month of great books and swag from my boxes, and I was really excited about the books I received. I enjoy getting these boxes and talking about them with friends and family. I really love the book community and have made some great friends because of the books, authors and boxes that I have been introduced to. I also really love that I can give back a little by purchasing a Bookworm Box, knowing that all their profits go to charities that really can put the money to good use.
The Bookworm Box was started by author Colleen Hoover, and was created with the purpose of spreading good and donating to charity. Each month a different charity is selected, and 100% of the profits from the box after overhead costs goes to that month's charity. Though the Bookworm Box has gone through a few changes since it started earlier this year, it is now available as a subscription service that renews each month. Once you sign up, you are billed on the 25th of each month for the following month's box. Each box features 2 signed paperbacks and swag. Though they do have some featured authors listed on their website, the books in each month's box are always a surprise, and there are a variety of boxes each month. So while you might get the same box as some others, you will not get the same box as every subscriber. The boxes are $39.99 a month plus shipping costs. Because they have a limited number of boxes available, new subscribers will have to wait for current subscribers to cancel their subscriptions or until the Bookworm Box opens up new spots. To get more information on when spots are available, make sure to follow their Facebook page as that is where they announce when new spots will be opened.

October Bookworm Box

The Bookworm Box that I received in October contained a signed copy of Pucked by Helena Hunting and a signed copy of Elements of Chemistry by Penny Reid. Swag received this month was a Bookworm Box sleeve of gum, Bookworm Box bookmark, Bookworm Box pen, Chelle Bliss Bookmark, Jennifer L. Armentrout Bookmark, Kelly Elliott Bookmark, Nancee Cain Bookmark, Joann I. Martin Sowles Bookmark, Kim Carmichael Bookmark, Signed JA Hensley Bookmark, Signed Tia Louise Postcard, Two Kim Carmichael Romance Trading Cards, My Mind's Playground Business Card, Sidonia Rose Swag Pack with a Business Card and Button, and some Halloween Candy.

Pucked by Helena Hunting

With a famous NHL player for a step-brother, Violet Hall is well acquainted with the playboy reputation many hockey stars come with. She’s smart enough to steer clear of those hot, well-built boys with unparalleled stamina. That is until she meets the legendary team captain—Alex Waters.

Violet isn’t interested in his pretty, beat-up face, or his rock-hard six-pack abs. But when Alex inadvertently obliterates Violet’s previous misapprehension regarding the inferior intellect of hockey players, he becomes more than just a hot body with a face to match.

In what can only be considered a complete lapse in judgment, Violet finds out just how good Alex is with the hockey stick in his pants. But what starts out as a one-night stand, quickly turns into something more. Post-night of orgasmic magic, Alex starts to call, and text, and e-mail and send extravagant—and quirky—gifts, making him difficult to ignore, and even more difficult not to like.

The problem is, the media portrays Alex as a total player, and Violet doesn’t want to be part of the game.

I have heard so many things about Helena Hunting and Pucked, that I was really excited to get this book in my box. I am a huge hockey fan, so this one is right up my alley. Though I haven't read Helena Hunting before, Pucked is said to be absolutely hilarious and is one of those books that I have been meaning to read since it came out. Now that I received this book, I feel the need to move this one up on my TBR list and I am really looking forward to giving this one a shot. Pucked is the first book in the Pucked series from Helena Hunting, and the second book Pucked Up was recently released. Each book in this series can be read as a standalone, but I am told that these are best read in order.

Elements of Chemistry

One week.
Private beach.
Invisible girl.
Jerk-faced bully.
What’s the worst that could happen?

Kaitlyn Parker has no problem being the invisible girl, which is why she finds herself hiding in various cabinets and closets all over her college campus. Despite her best efforts, she can’t escape the notice of Martin Sandeke—bad boy, jerkface bully, and the universe’s hottest, wealthiest, and most unobtainable bachelor—who also happens to be Kaitlyn’s chemistry lab partner.

Kaitlyn might be the only girl who isn’t interested in exploiting his stunning rower’s build, chiseled features, and family's billionaire fortune. Kaitlyn wants Martin for his brain, specifically to tabulate findings of trace elements in surface water.

When Kaitlyn saves Martin from a nefarious plot, Martin uses the opportunity to push Kaitlyn out of her comfort zone: spring break, one week, house parties, bathing suits, and suntan lotion. Can she overcome her aversion to being noticed? Will he be able grow beyond his self-centered nature? Or, despite their obvious chemistry, will Martin be the one to drive Kaitlyn into the science cabinet of obscurity for good?

Purchase: | Amazon | Kindle | B&N | Book Depository |

I am already a fan of Penny Reid, but I haven't yet read Elements of Chemistry so this was another one that I was really excited to get in my box. Penny Reid has a great writing style that is really easy to get into, and she is wicked funny. If you are looking for a romance with a ton of witty banter and humor, you have got to give Penny Reid a shot! Elements of Chemistry is actually 3 separate parts that make up one book. It contains Part 1: Attraction, Part 2: Heat and Part 3: Capture. There are said to be more books coming in the Hypothesis Series at a later date.

October Book Candy Box

The Book Candy Box that I received in October included a signed Contrite by Kathy Coopmans (this one had a bookplate), a signed Unavoidable Chance by Annalisa Nicole (this one had a bookplate) and a signed Educate Me by Lexi Buchanan. I was lucky enough to receive one of twenty boxes that had Educate Me included as a surprise bonus. Swag in this months box was a Postcard for the Books Are Bigger In Texas Author Event, Bookmark for the RT Readers & Writers Roundup, Signed Skye Turner Bookmark, Annalisa Nicole Bookmark, JM Witt Postcard, KA Hunter/Kimi Flores Postcard, and a Nicole Edwards Compact Mirror.

Contrite by Kathy Coopmans

What happens when the man you’re married to isn’t the man you married anymore? Clove Calloway knows within an hour of picking up her husband Turner from the airport that something is different. Yet she can't pin point what. Together since College, they know everything about each other. So why has she spent the last few days watching everything he does, hoping for a clue? What could have happened within that week he was gone?

One way or another she's going to find out.
When Clove invests in the help of her brother Zack, a police detective, she’s afraid her suspicions of infidelity will be confirmed. Terrified that such news will crush her heart, she sets about preparing for the worst.

Only to find it's much more than she could have imagined—there is no other woman.

Clove’s life is about to descend into a web of deceit, lies and betrayal.

Appearances can be deceiving… and only the Master Manipulator will be left standing.

“The eyes only see what the mind is prepared to comprehend.” – Henri Bergson

Purchase: | Amazon | Kindle |

Contrite is one of those books that I have heard of and have been wanting to read, but just haven't got around to for whatever reason. I think part of the reason that I haven't read it yet is because I was waiting for the sequel to come out since I knew it was the first in a duet. I have to admit that I originally wanted to read this one because I loved the cover. The black and white picture with the bold color for the title just drew me in and really grabbed my attention. This is another one of those books that I am actually really excited to read and has been bumped up on my TBR list now that I have a signed copy. Contrite is the first in the duet, with the second book in the duet being Reprisal.

Unavoidable Chance by Annalisa Nicole

Ava Wellington is a busy, prestigious Seattle lawyer with her sights firmly set on her goals. She’s precise and calculated to a fault and doesn’t have time in her career for relationships, especially with a man like Jax. Neither he nor what comes with him were ever part of her plan.

Jaxon Landry is ex-military, turned chef of his own thriving restaurant and the best single dad he knows how to be. He lives and breathes for the happiness of his two little girls. For the past two years he’s lived in a dreary world of regret, loss, and disappointment. That is until he meets Ava. He never thought he’d see color again in his dreams, much less in a woman.

Can Jax show Ava that she is more than checklists and goals?

Can Ava keep her promise even when she’s handed the golden opportunity to her ultimate goal. Will she risk love over her career?

Family is a feeling, not a definition. There are no words for it. It’s a feeling in your gut, in your heart, and in your soul.

There’s nothing you can do to stop true love, it’s unavoidable.

Purchase: | Amazon | Kindle | B&N | Book Depository |

Unavoidable Chance and Annalisa Nicole are both completely new to me and I didn't know anything about this series or author before receiving my box. That is one of the main reasons that I get these boxes besides the fact that I love getting goodies in the mail, but to discover books and authors that I might never have otherwise. After reading the blurb for this book I am actually really excited to read it! It sounds so good and I love a military hero! Not only does the story sound good, but the covers are absolutely gorgeous! Unavoidable Chance is the fifth book in the Running Into Love series, but each book appears to be a standalone story.

Educate Me by Lexi Buchanan

Bianca is a new, 24 year old teacher at the local high school who can't stop thinking about one of her pupils, 18 year old Mason.

Bianca soon discovers that Mason wants his hands on her just as badly.

How can they have a relationship when everything is against them?

Purchase: | Amazon | Kindle | B&N | iTunes |

Lexi Buchanan and her novella Educate Me are another completely new one to me. I didn't know anything about the story or author, but this one sounds like it is hot! I have to admit that forbidden romance stories are a bit of a guilty pleasure for me, so this teacher/student romance really intrigues me. It is short and said to have explicit content, so I am expecting this one to be super steamy and I couldn't be more excited to read it.

So we decided to start a new feature here on RFTC. With book subscription boxes becoming all the rage we thought that it would be fun to share our thoughts and reviews for the boxes that we currently are subscribed to.

I have been getting a few book boxes over the last few months, and I always love to talk about them with my friends and family. So when Dani asked me if I would be interested in sharing them with the blog, I thought it was a great idea! Subscription boxes have become extremely popular over the last few years, and there are some really great ones available for those of us who love books! So we thought we would put something together for those that might be interested in getting more information about those available. I love getting a surprise in the mail, and the best part is that I get to discover books or authors that I might never have heard about otherwise. I currently get two book box subscriptions, The Bookworm Box and The Book Candy Box. Below are the boxes that I received in September, but here is a little information on the boxes before I get into sharing the content.
