ARC Review: Ryan's Love by C.A. Harms

Ryan's Love is the first book in the new Sawyer Brothers series from C.A. Harms. I am a huge fan of C.A. Harms, so I couldn't wait to read this book. Her stories are always emotional and romantic, and I immediately find myself invested in her characters. Ryan's Love was no different, and I really enjoyed these characters and the way that their story played out.

After losing his wife suddenly, Ryan struggles with how to live a life without her. She was his best friend, and the time they spent together was too brief. Now he has to figure out a way to pick up the pieces and keep going for his daughter. For three years Ryan can't stand the thought of being with anyone else, and he isn't even tempted to look at another woman. But when Amber arrives in town to re-open her grandmother's bakery and start her life over after leaving a cheating ex-fiance, he finds himself taking interest in her. Amber knows that Ryan needs to take things slowly after losing his wife, but can she be what he and his daughter need to help heal? Or will it be too much, too soon for Ryan and Olivia to handle?

I really liked Ryan and Amber. These two were so great together, and I felt like they had such a great connection. They were really sweet together, and I liked that they were each respectful of the situation they were in. They took things slowly, and made sure to be upfront and honest with Ryan's daughter Olivia. I liked that she was their priority, and the fact that Amber was so patient and understanding about everything. She really was selfless, putting Ryan and Olivia's needs above her own wants and needs. Ryan was learning to live again, and I liked that he was able to see just how far he had come out of his grief with Amber's help. He realized that he had only been surviving for Olivia's sake, so it was great to see him step into the light after all the dark he had experienced. He had great chemistry with Amber, and I felt their relationship was so natural. These two just fit together, and it was clear that they both cared about each other and Olivia so much.

The reason that I didn't rate this one at five stars was because I felt like while I really enjoyed it and liked these two together, there were a few things I had issues with. For me, it felt like Ryan's wife Claire was too much a part of this story. While I understood it was a huge deal for he and Olivia to have lost her and that he had loved her all his life, I felt like it was hard to really ever get fully behind his new relationship with Amber when Claire was constantly in between them. I didn't expect anyone to forget her or stop mentioning her completely, but it didn't seem as though there were three years between the time she had died and the time he met Amber. It felt really fresh, and I wanted that to sort of be more in the background than it was. I also thought that there was an unnecessary bit of drama with Zoey, Claire's friend and Olivia's doctor. She seemed to be jealous and it seemed to be the start of something, only to be quickly dropped. I didn't really feel like it added anything, and yet it just felt unresolved. I did like this story overall though, and I really think that you can't go wrong with anything by C.A. Harms. The epilogue was great, and I really liked how the bonus chapter set up the next book in this series. I am anxious to see what will happen after reading the bonus chapter, and I can't wait to get to know the rest of the characters in this series better after reading about them here.

ARC Review: Playing For Her Heart by Meagan Erickson

Playing For Her Heart is the story of Chloe and Grant. The premise of the book is that the two meet at a comic con where they are dressed up as different characters. They hook up for what is supposed to be a one night stand but neither can get the other off their mind. Well, as romantic fortune would have it, Chloe turns out to be the younger sister of Grant's business associate. Not only that, but outside of role playing, Chloe seems to actually be a totally different person. Indeed, throughout the book Chloe is convinced that she can't be sexy or assertive without costumes and role playing. Grant spends most of the book ducking Chloe's brother while trying to convince her that she has appeal as herself.

What I liked about this book was the well described relationship between the main couple. Through their conversations and interactions, I honestly felt the connection between the couple and it made me root for them and invest in the story. I also liked the addition of Grant's daughter and Chloe's connection to her. Chloe's mentorship of Grant's daughter gave us a different perspective on Chloe as a person that was much needed given what I have to say below.
Throughout the book Chloe is struggling with residual bad feelings that she developed about her own worth when her sister died. I get that losing a sibling would mess with anybodys head but where things went left for me with this book was how much Chloe hated herself. It just got to hard to read after awhile. This book had some pretty hot sex scenes but not even that could drag me back in after Chloe's depressing azz got done dragging me into a the depths of despair. Like, there are only so many times you can read a heroine wish that she had died in someone else's place before you start trying to find a window to throw your own self out of.

Speaking of family drama, I have to say that I'm unclear on why Chloe's brother had such an issue with his very adult sister dating? I just didn't get why dude was acting like an overprotective Dad. It was...weird. Yes, yes, he had issues too but it just seemed like the author needed to add the "forbidden" aspect to the romance and did it in sort of an awkward way.

All in all, this book is a super fast read, it's entertaining and well written. The only thing you need to look out for is the depressing heroine. If you can withstand that, this book is for you.

Review: Twinsequences by Jennifer Foor

I am a huge fan of Jennifer Foor's so I jumped at the chance to read Twinsequences from her. I knew going in this one would be different after reading the blurb, and I can honestly say that this one was quite the wild ride. This is unlike anything I have read from Foor before, and I don't even really know where to begin as far as classifying this book or explaining without giving away everything. So this review is mostly going to be about how I personally felt, rather than what happened. The one thing I will tell you though is that this book has romance, but it is also full of suspense and drama.

Ivy and Willow are twins. They were best friends all through their childhood, until they reached high school and everything changed, Willow never expected for her sister to be the one to steal away her happiness and future when she went after the boy that Willow was in love with. Willow left town with her broken heart, and four years have now passed. Willow missed her two best friends, but she couldn't stomach being around them knowing that they were now married and living the life that should have been hers. But when she receives a call in the middle of the night from Ivy saying she needs help, Willow knows she would do anything for her sister even if it means returning home and coming face to face with the man she will never have, Ivy's husband Stoshua Wheeler. But when Ivy asks her to pretend to be her and do whatever it takes to keep Stoshua from figuring out she's actually Willow, Willow begins to wonder just what Ivy is up to.

I hated Ivy instantly. Part of that was because this was clearly Willow's story and since it is told from her POV we get to see everything that she has been through. But there was something about Ivy that instantly told me she wasn't up to any good. Even when they were kids, it just felt like something was off. I liked Willow, but her loyalty and devotion to her sister after everything was something that I flat out didn't understand. The more she learned about everything, the more she started to see what had been happening all those years that she was unaware of. Yet she still wanted to believe the best in Ivy and continued to run to her at the drop of a hat. I didn't get it, and frankly she should have been running in the opposite direction as far as I could tell, no matter what her family or anyone else thought. I liked Stoshua, but he wasn't without his own blame here. There were many things that he did that really pissed me off, and I wish that he had been more honest with Willow both in the past and in the present. I felt like these two needed to talk to one another more and after everything that they had been through I didn't get why they continued to make decisions or act without talking to one another first. The one thing that was clear though is that the connection and chemistry between Willow and Stoshua was one that had endured no matter what they had been through. They loved one another in a very deep and true way, and I really felt like their feelings had never diminished over the years apart.

Overall, I really want to go into more about this book but I can't without spoiling anything and this is one of those books that you just have to experience. I do wish that we had been given Stoshua's POV as I think that it would have added so much to this story! I wanted to see what he was thinking and feeling as everything played out here. I have never met a character like Ivy before, and honestly I hated her right from the start. She is one of those that you just love to hate. You want to believe that with the right amount of help and love that she can change, but honestly I just don't see it happening. She is completely certifiable, and yet I do see some of what made her become the way she is. Though I don't condone anything she has done, I think that Jennifer Foor did a great job of showing how in her mind how she got to the point she is at. It will definitely be interesting to see what happens in the next book, and I already know that it is going to be another crazy ride for all these characters. While this book isn't for everyone and is very outlandish, I took it for what it was and found myself getting lost in all the crazy twists and turns. If you are looking for something realistic, I don't think that this book would be for you. The amount of crazy and out there circumstances for everything to happen here would never be something typical in real life, but if you are looking for something wild and different and very much like a crazy soap opera, this is one worth giving a shot!
