I live, and write, surrounded by laundry and old newspapers most of the time with my daughter, son and The Exec in Fareham, on the south coast of England. Sometimes I can smell the sea from my back garden and I have grand designs on a luxurious garden office one day. Or a castle, I'm not fussy.
When I'm not working, I do enjoy a good rummage through a decent antique shop, and popping into Sainsbury’s. Oh, and wine and expensive lipstick are non-negotiable.
Places to find Rachel:
First off, can you tell us a bit about you?
I’m a British mother of two, formerly an accountant, but now a full-time author. I live on the south coast of England and can sometimes smell the sea from my back garden.
Did you always want to be a writer?
Not consciously, because I was brought up to be practical and to make sure I had a ‘proper job’! This was good advice as I was financially independent until I met the love of my life when I was thirty years old. The world of corporate finance might be dull, but it does pay. The chances of making a decent living out of writing have always been slim, so it could only ever be a dream. Or so I thought …
Having said that, I always wrote for fun and was especially mischievous in my storytelling as a child and teenager. I’m SO thrilled that I can now call myself an author.
What kind of writer are you? Panster or Plotter?
I’m a reformed pants girl. I plot these days, it’s the only way I could ever put forward a decent proposal to an editor, but flying by the seat of your pants is fun!
Where do your ideas come from?
So many places. An overheard conversation, news article, photograph, lyric from a song, a vivid dream … Too many places to mention really.
A la Twitter style, can you describe your book (or series) in 140 characters or less.
Billionaire banker weds debt-ridden farmer’s daughter for a bet. A sexy marriage of convenience story set in the sun-baked Mediterranean.
What are some of your favorite kinds of stories to read?
Romances with sex, escapist fantasy locations and the odd swearword keep me happy!
Do you have a favorite book and if so what is it?
That’s a difficult question! I don’t think I have an absolute favorite book, but reading 1984 by George Orwell changed the way I saw the world forever. I wonder what he’d think of us all today, with our computers, iThings and cyberspace …
What are the scenes that are the hardest for you to write?
The last page is an absolute killer, give me a steamy sex scene any day!
If you could have dinner with any three authors, who would you choose and why?
Annie Seaton, Jackie Collins and Rupert Everett.
Annie, because we’ve become such good friends through working with Entangled Publishing, but live at opposite ends of the planet! Hopefully we’ll have dinner for real some day.
Jackie Collins, because she so glamorous and successful and I would love to be her.
Rupert, because he’s so outrageous, naughty and handsome. I also suspect he has buckets of celebrity gossip we could wheedle out of him after a few drinks.
Last question, are you working on anything right now?
There’s always something cooking away, never fear! Currently I have a few category length projects going on in varying states of completion. I can’t say too much about those, but they have Sicilian, Australian-Greek and American heroes. I also have a couple of longer novels simmering away.
He bought her with cold, hard cash, but can she stop him from stealing her heart?
Blackmailed to marry against his will, Ricardo Almanza needs a wife before he’s thirty, and time is running out. A notorious playboy, marriage is the last thing he wants, but his stepmother’s sexy, debt-ridden personal assistant is the perfect solution. He makes her a business deal she can’t refuse—one million euros for three months as his wife. He might even enjoy being married to her … if she doesn’t kick the crap out of him again.
Helen Marshall can’t believe she’s considering Almanza’s outrageous proposal, but she must help clear her parents’ debts or they face financial ruin. The small print on the marriage contract changes to read three months as his wife in every way—including in the bedroom. Has she gotten in too deep, or will she need a new contract addendum, extending their marriage forever?
