As a child, Soraya dreamed of becoming an author, recreating the types of stories she devoured day and night. Fast forward more than a few years, and Soraya is now living her dream. Working as a freelance writer and now a professional author too, she writes every day and loves her job. Soraya describes being a Harlequin Mills & Boon author as “the best career in the world”, and she hopes to be writing heart-warming, emotional romances for many years to come.
Soraya loves spending her days thinking up characters for romance stories, and her home is a constant source of inspiration. She lives with her own real life hero and son on a small farm in New Zealand, surrounded by animals and with an office overlooking a field where their horses graze.
Places to find Soraya:
First off, can you tell us a bit about you?
I’m a busy wife and author, as well as being mom to an almost 2 year old toddler, two gorgeous dogs, four horses and some hens!
Did you always want to be a writer?
Absolutely. I still have some pretty cute notebooks from when I was about 8 years old. I was very proud of my rambling stories back then, and read them proudly to my teacher each day =)
What kind of writer are you? Panster or Plotter?
I’m a pantser who would love to be a plotter! I try to plot more now than I used to, to make my writing time more productive, but it doesn’t come naturally to me.
Where do your ideas come from?
Everywhere. Ideas sometimes come when you least expect them – reading the newspaper, listening to other people’s conversations, or just walking and enjoying nature.
A la Twitter style, can you describe your book (or series) in 140 characters or less.
A hot Navy SEAL, a beautiful soldier on leave, and a mission that isn’t strictly business.
Out of any of your books, which one would you like to be a character in? And why?
I’d probably like to be a character in my young adult book, Change. I’d love to be a leopard shifter!
What are some of your favorite kinds of stories to read?
I love paranormal romance, thrillers, young adult, sweet romance and contemporary or historical women’s fiction. Pretty much anything so long as the author is a great storyteller.
Do you have a favorite book and if so what is it?
No one favorite book, but I did particularly love The Bronze Horseman when I read it, and I love anything by Nalini Singh, Nora Roberts, Harlan Coben, Stephanie Meyer… the list goes on!
Have you ever fallen for another author's hero? If so, who and why?
I often fall for heroes, probably most often in paranormal romance novels. I love a really alpha paranormal hero, but super alpha contemporary heroes just annoy me!
Describe the characteristics that make up your perfect hero.
A strong, sexy, handsome man who could protect me from anything if he had to.
What are the scenes that are the hardest for you to write?
Sex scenes! I get embarrassed easily when I think about family members reading my books!
If you could have dinner with any three book characters, who would you choose and why?
Oooh, that’s tough! I actually can’t think of anyone, because the vampire characters I love would probably kill me, and my favorite characters are usually from paranormal stories.
If you could have dinner with any three authors, who would you choose and why?
Nora Roberts, because she’s a super star in the romance world. Stephanie Meyer because I am a complete fan of the Twilight series. Harlan Coben, because he is the world’s best thriller/crime author. But I have to add that if my husband was also joining me for dinner, I’d forfeit one of my favorite authors so he could meet his favorite – Wilbur Smith!
What do you like to do in your free time?
Relax at home on our farm, ride my horse, walk our dogs – just simple things with my family.
Favorite movie?
Dear John, The Notebook or Inception.
Favorite song?
John Meyer’s version of Free Fallin’
Favorite color?
Don’t have one.
Last question, are you working on anything right now?
Yes. I’m currently working on my next Harlequin Romance novel, and I’m also working on the sequel to my young adult book, Change.
With only 48 hours back on home soil for Christmas, United States Army Corporal Saskia Cullen is desperate to spend every minute with her young son. So when heavy snowfall closes JFK airport and she misses her connecting flight, she’s devastated. Until Navy SEAL Luke Gray offers to keep her company… and then finds a way to get her home.
Luke is back in the US on leave, waiting to hear the details of his next mission, and Saskia proves to be a pleasant distraction. And when he hears that she needs to get home to see her son, he’s prepared to do anything to help the sexy single mom. Trouble is, he hadn’t planned on falling for anyone, let alone a beautiful soldier about to return overseas.
