Interview with Author Macy Beckett and Giveaway

Today I am super excited and happy to welcome back to RFTC, author Macy Beckett. Macy is super awesome and it's because of her Sultry Springs series that I have become such a fan of contemporary romance. They are just so freaking good! With today being the release day for A Shot of Sultry I just knew I had to have Macy come by to chat. Please you all, give Macy a very warm welcome!

Macy Beckett writes hot and humorous romance set in Sultry Springs, Texas: where first loves find second chances. Her debut novel, SULTRY WITH A TWIST, released in October, and book two, A SHOT OF SULTRY, is now available in stores and online. A third Sultry Springs novel will release in August. Additionally, Macy writes young adult science fiction under the name Melissa Landers. You can learn more about her books—for adults and teens—on her website.

Places to find Macy:
Site | Facebook | Twitter |

First off, can you tell us a bit about you?
Sure thing! I’m Macy Beckett and I write hot, humorous small-town romance for Sourcebooks and Penguin. I live in the Cincinnati ‘burbs with Mr. Macy and our three children, and in addition to romance, I write YA under the name Melissa Landers. You can find out more about all my books—for adults and teens—at www.macybeckett.com

A la Twitter style, please describe your book (or series) in 140 characters or less.
A disgraced journalist is swept into a sultry affair with her brother’s best friend while filming him for a comeback documentary. (Was that 140 characters? I didn’t count.)

What types of scenes are your most favorite to write?
Oh, that’s easy. The sex scenes. Regular chapters take me nearly a week to write, but I can bang out (hehe, pun definitely intended) a sex chapter in a day.

What are the things that influence you the most as a writer?
I draw inspiration from music and time spent alone. Long walks help, as well as driving in the car without the kids there to distract me.

What are some of your favorite characteristics to find in a hero?
I like my heroes flawed—you won’t find any “Mary Stu” types in my books. But while my heroes behave like cavemen at times, they’re good deep down where it counts. Their actions speak louder than their (sometimes idiotic) words.

Tell me, is there anything that we would be surprised to learn about you?
Apparently I have some prim and proper mannerisms, and when meeting me for the first time, most people are surprised at what comes out of my mouth. I’m pretty candid, and I have a quirky sense of humor.

If you could live inside any book, which one would you choose and why?
I’d love to live inside Tolkien’s Middle Earth, but only if I get to cross over as an elf. Elves are gorgeous and immortal...unlike dwarves and hobbits.

If you could spend the day in the shoes of any of your characters, who would you choose and why?
That would be Cara Sweeny, my heroine in ALIENATED. You won’t meet her until February 2014, but she’s a fiercely-competitive valedictorian who falls in love with her hot alien exchange student. She suffers more than her fair share of hardships along the journey, but she gets to travel to foreign galaxies and help save mankind from a gristly end. Much more exciting than folding laundry, eh?

If you were stranded on a desert island and could bring only three items, what would you bring and why?
I’m all about keeping it logical. I’d bring a water purifier, a crossbow with plenty of arrows (to shoot game), and a large plastic tarp for shelter.

Last question, are you working on anything right now?
Psh, I’m always working on something. I turned in the third Sultry Springs book (SURRENDER TO SULTRY, coming in August from Sourcebooks), and now I’m drafting the sequel to ALIENATED and the first book in my new romance series, PREMARITAL HEX (coming in 2014 from Penguin.) Busy, busy, busy!

Thanks for having me on the blog today, Danielle! I’d like to ask your readers a question: What are your “must haves” when it comes to small-town romances?

Welcome to Sultry Springs, Texas: where home can be the perfect place for a fresh start.

For West Coast filmmaker Bobbi Gallagher, going back to Sultry Springs is a last resort. But with her career in tatters, a quick trip to her hometown might get her the footage she needs to salvage her reputation. She just can't let anything distract her again. Not even the gorgeous contractor her brother asked to watch over her. As if she can't handle filming a few rowdy Texans.

Golden boy Trey Lewis, with his blond hair and Technicolor-blue eyes, is a leading man if Bobbi ever saw one. He's strong and confident and--much to her delight--usually shirtless. He thinks keeping his best friend's baby sister out of trouble will be easy. But he has no idea of the trouble in store for him...

  1. Congrats on the release of A SHOT OF SULTRY! I loved SULTRY WITH A TWIST, so I can't wait to get my hands on this one as soon as I finish writing this chapter of my dissertation!

I could never live in a small town (must've been growing up in a bustling Asian metropolis of 6.5 million people in ~900 km^2!), but I love vicariously enjoying small-town life through romances. My must-have: a quirky cast of neighbours & townsfolk who know everything that happens with the hero/heroine essentially as it's happening. (Case in point: Lucille in Jill Shalvis's LUCKY HARBOUR series). Isn't that what small towns are about? :P

  2. Cris, I hear you. I'm not a fan of living in small towns, but for some reason I love reading about them!

  6. Congrats Macy on your new release!!! Looks fabulous :) I have never and really don't want to live/experience small town life, but it's fun to read about it! I like how some stories make small town life out to be so close knit community and that appeals to me. But I'm very private so I don't think I could deal with that in real life!

  7. I'm with May, I love quirky or eccentric but totally loveable characters. Lots of chemistry and little angst between the main character.

  8. My aunt and uncle lived in a small town in Ky. Every summer, my sister and I would visit for several weeks. I drove my young cousins around without a driver's license (no one cared), played outside with all the town kids, rode motorcycles and horses, and basically ran wild. IT WAS GREAT!!! Everyone remembered our names from summer to summer. That's what small town life is to me. Easygoing, slow, long history and memory.

  9. Cindi, when I was a little girl, I spent summers on my aunt and uncle's farm in rural NC. (VERY rural!) It was so much fun--I made some very happy memories during those summers. But when I moved there after graduating from college, I didn't like it quite as much. lol.

  11. Hmm, for small town romance I want to have an interesting (perhaps even quirky) cast of secondary characters.

  12. Small town romances should have quirky supporting characters, kids and animals.

I have to agree that it's a cast of quirky characters that would make small town living a hoot.

  18. I agree with the some of the above comments, that there should be quirky characters, some of them relatives & a senior citizen or 2. Some sort of animal or animals work as well.

  19. I like small towns although I don't live in one. I did grow up in a small town in Kansas. Now I live in another state in the south. Thanks!

  20. Seeing as I grew up in a really small town, I was always looking for the thing that was missing in life and then finally moved away and found him.
However I think the must haves for small town romance are the:
small town vibe - everyone knows everything so it's either you have to be extremely careful to keep some of your life private or else everyone will talk.
the hardworking alpha male - the guy that works hard and plays hard but still has that softer side to him.
the misunderstood girl - people think they know her but she is more than what they believe her to be or what rumors describe her as.
the friends - they are as sarcastic yet fun and would bend over backwards for each other.
the problematic ones - there is always one or two that will do anything to cause trouble for the couple in love.
