Interview with Author Jo Davis and Giveaway

Today I would like to welcome Jo Davis to RFTC. Jo is celebrating the recent release of her book, Sworn to Protect and has stopped by to answer a few questions. Please give Jo a warm welcome.

National Bestselling author Jo Davis is best known for her popular Firefighters of Station Five series written as Jo Davis, and her dark, sexy paranormal series Alpha Pack, written as J.D. Tyler. PRIMAL LAW, the first book in her Alpha Pack series, is the winner of the National Reader's Choice Award in Paranormal. She's also been a multiple finalist in the Colorado Romance Writers Award of Excellence, a finalist for the Bookseller's Best Award, has captured the HOLT Medallion Award of Merit, and has been a two-time nominee for the Australian Romance Readers Award in romantic suspense.

Jo's books regularly appear on the Neilson Bookscan, Barnes and Noble, BooksOnBoard, and Amazon bestseller lists, among others.

Jo is currently at work on a new contemporary romance series titled SUGARLAND BLUE for NAL/Signet Eclipse, a spin-off of her Firefighters of Station Five series scheduled to debut in April 2013 with the kick-off novella ARMED AND DANGEROUS. Book 1, SWORN TO PROTECT, is being released May 7, 2013. She's also publishing a new FBI series, ARMED AND DEADLY, set to debut in April 2013 with ONE LAST KISS. Jo lives in Texas with her two kids and a cute Boston terrier.

Places to find Jo:

First off, can you tell us a bit about you?
I'm a multi-published author who currently writes under 2 pen names, and I've been writing for 13 years. I'm a mother of 2 awesome almost-grown kids, and I just bought a new home that we're having fun decorating.

Did you always want to be a writer?
I've always wanted to be a writer since I was a kid. But the moment I knew I *had* to do it was when I turned 35 and I still hadn't followed my dream. It was one of those epiphanies where I told myself, “It's now or never!” I started working hard at it and eventually achieved my dream.

What kind of writer are you? Pantser or Plotter?
I'm a pantser who was forced to become a plotter. A pantser writes “by the seat of his/her pants” and doesn't always know where the book is going or how it's going to get there. A plotter does exactly that—he/she plots out the book so she knows where it's going all the way to the end. I had to become a plotter because I write for a New York publisher. They like to know where the stories are going if they're going to buy them—they're funny like that!

Where do your ideas come from?
The depths of my dark, twisted mind. And the news. Truth is often stranger than fiction.

A la Twitter style, can you describe your book (or series) in 140 characters or less.
The Sugarland Blue series centers on the heroes of the Sugarland Police Department and is about our men in blue, the dangers they face, and the women who love them.

What are some of your favorite kinds of stories to read?
For the mainstream, I enjoy Jim Butcher and Stephen King, and John Sandford. I love sci-fi/fantasy and police thrillers. I also enjoy m/m romance.

Do you have a favorite book and if so what is it?
That's a tough question! I guess I'd have to go with my most-read book of all time: WHERE THE RED FERN GROWS by Wilson Rawls. I still have my old copy of the book on my keeper shelf. There's just something about this book that starts with an old man who lets in a stray dog to warm himself by the fire, which causes the old man to launch into the tale of the most special time in his boyhood, that's just awesome. To this day, I can't read the end of that book without bawling.

What are the scenes that are the hardest for you to write?
Right now, love scenes are the hardest to write. Action and the thrill of investigation, hunting down the bad guy is my forte, so I have to remember to include the sizzle.

If you could have dinner with any three authors, who would you choose and why?
Stephen King, John Sandford, and my dear friend Addison Fox. I've had dinner with Addison many times, but she's a bubbly ball of energy and to see her interact with the other two would be a hoot!

Last question, are you working on anything right now? What's next?
SWORN TO PROTECT is out on May 7th!

I also have a 3-part e-novella series coming out later this year that I can't say much about yet. It's contemporary romance. Stay tuned for more information!

After that is HUNTER'S HEART (Alpha Pack #4) writing as J.D. Tyler, coming in September. This is Ryon Hunter's story, and I'm very excited about this one. It's a “predator” story, if you will. The most chilling danger to the team is the monster they can't see coming…

Question: Who is your favorite TV/movie cop/detective/agent of all time and why? Name their character and the show.

From the author of the popular Firefighters of Station Five series comes a sizzling new novella about Sugarland’s favorite cop—and the courageous woman destined to steal his heart...

When Detective Shane Ford, Sugarland’s favorite man in blue, and Juvenile Detective Daisy Callahan work together on a dangerous case, they find themselves ignoring their professional instincts and falling hard. But when their romance gets in the way of their job—and puts both their lives in jeopardy—Shane vows to break things off. But as they’re about to discover, this kind of steamy passion is impossible to deny…

    1. Oh, and my favorite TV cop is FBI Agent Seeley Booth from Bones. He is so funny in his cockiness and his funny socks and belt buckles, but he's so sweet, too, when it comes to those he cares about.
