Fate has brought them together -again.
At one time, Jemma had meant the world to Dane Pendleton, but then she betrayed their young love by marrying another for his title and fortune.
Now Time has turned the tables. Dane is wealthy, respected, knighted and the widowed Jemma has nothing but her pride.
His honor for hers . . .
Dane’s name is on the lips of every beauty in London. They whisper he learned “tricks” while he was in the Orient. But has he forgotten Jemma, now Lady Mosby, and what they had once meant to each other? And will he accept her devil’s bargain?
In every woman’s life, there is that one love who slipped away. The man who makes her wonder “what if?”
But is this a momentary madness or a chance to rekindle a love that could last a lifetime?

Dane knew it was true, and he had the scars to prove it—in his back.
There had been a time when he’d loved Jemma with all he’d had to offer, and it had not been enough. She’d returned his promises, built up his hopes, made him believe they would be together. Then she’d spurned him and married another.
Dane sat very still and slowly released his breath, surprised at how fresh and overwhelming the pain still was.
Of course, there had been other women over the years. He’d kept a string of mistresses, all of them more beautiful than Jemma, all of them vowing love as Jemma had . . . and some may have. After all, he’d paid their bills, k ept them in style, and what more was there to love? Women were mercenary creatures at heart. Each and every one of them. They always wanted something. Fortunately, he was a man of means who could indulge their passion for trinkets and petty possessions.
Perhaps I should thank Jemma, Dane mused. If she had accepted his marriage offer all those years ago, he’d probably be a fat, happy clergyman somewhere with a gaggle of children instead of the man of the world he was now. Because of her rejection, he’d left the safe haven of Lancashire and risked all in India. He’d become a man who knew no fear, who’d hardened himself to gentler emotions and knew how to pay blood in blood. A man alone.
Born in Olathe, Kansas, Cathy Maxwell’s family roots go back to the Mayflower and the Revolutionary War. She has long called Virginia home, noting she is “a Virginian by choice, but a Kansan by nature.” She worked in television news as a broadcaster before spending six years in the Navy. She attended Air Force intelligence school, worked in the Pentagon and did a tour with Naval Intelligence.
Cathy began her writing career in 1991 while her children were still small. “It wasn’t easy,” she says. “I worked full time, my husband travelled, we had three kids, I volunteered and I was writing from four until seven every morning.” Now, twenty years later, she is the author of seventeen national bestsellers and her novels appear regularly on The New York Times and USA Today bestseller lists. A rarity in the book world, Cathy has published every one of her novels with the same publisher, Harper Collins/Avon Books.
