Interview with Author Emma Chase and Giveaway

Meet Emma Chase author of Sustained.

By day, Emma Chase is a devoted wife and mother who resides in a small town in New Jersey. By night she is a keyboard crusader, toiling away the hours to bring her colorful characters and their endless antics to life. She has a long standing love/hate relationship with caffeine.

Emma is an avid reader. Before her children were born she was known to consume whole books in a single day. Writing has also always been a passion and with the 2013 release of her debut romantic comedy, Tangled, the ability to now call herself an author is nothing less than a dream come true.

First off, can you tell us a bit about you?
Did you mean, like – I’m a Gemini and my favorite color is yellow kinds of things (cause I am and it is) or more of an – I’m the author of the Tangled Series and current Legal Briefs Series (cause I’m that too).

I also live in New Jersey with my two amazing kids, my wonderful husband and two ill-mannered dogs (who I completely love in spite of their naughtiness).

Did you always want to be a writer?
Yes, it was my dream since I was about twelve years old. I also wanted to buy an island that my entire family could live on – but that one hasn’t come true yet.

What kind of writer are you? Panster or Plotter?
Definitely a plotter. I know what will happen from beginning to end – but only in my head. Every time I try to write an outline, it ends up so detailed with notes and dialogue, I might as well just write the whole book.

Where do your ideas come from?
The ideas for my stories always begin with a character. The character will come to me, most times from a song – not really from the lyrics but more from the feel of the song. A couple of times the character has been inspired by the place I’m in – a city street, a quaint town, etc.

Once the character is in my head, the questions are: 1) How did they become who they are? 2) Where are they headed now? 3) What will happen to them along the way?

The answers to those questions becomes the story.

A la Twitter style, can you describe your book (or series) in 140 characters or less.
Tough, hot guy meets awesome, beautiful woman & cute smartass kids in her care. Guy’s life changes. Funny, sexy, sad, HEA times commence!
(I actually wrote this on twitter to make sure – 140 characters exactly!)

What are some of your favorite kinds of stories to read?
Sexy, smart romances with all the feels – but not too heartbreaking or dark, just enough angst to make it interesting. And always a happy ending.

Do you have a favorite book and if so what is it?
I have a few favorite books. The ones I reread the most are The Bride by Julie Garwood, The Malory Series by Johanna Lindsey and Wuthering Heights by Emily Brontë.

What are the scenes that are the hardest for you to write? Why?
Scenes when a character is in transition – when they’re confused or indecisive about something are always tricky for me. Because all of my books are in first person POV, it’s difficult to describe for the reader what the character themselves don’t really understand. And emotionally, those are always tough notes to hit in a realistic way.

If you could have dinner with any three authors, who would you choose and why?
  • George RR Martin where hopefully he will tell me how his A Song of Ice and Fire Series ends.
  • Diana Gabaldon where hopefully she will tell me how her Outlander Series ends.
  • And Emily Brontë because I think Heathcliff is a fascinating character and I would love to talk about him with the woman who created him.

Last question, are you working on anything right now?
I’m working on edits for Appealed – Brent’s story – the third book in Legal Briefs Series. After that, I have files filled with ideas for new stories and a few continuations of some old ones.

I’m a nighttime reader – curled on the couch with my dogs. What’s your favorite time and place to read?

A knight in tarnished armor is still a knight.

When you’re a defense attorney in Washington, DC, you see firsthand how hard life can be, and that sometimes the only way to survive is to be harder. I, Jake Becker, have a reputation for being cold, callous, and intimidating—and that suits me just fine. In fact, it’s necessary when I’m breaking down a witness on the stand.

Complications don’t work for me—I’m a “need-to-know” type of man. If you’re my client, tell me the basic facts. If you’re my date, stick to what will turn you on. I’m not a therapist or Prince Charming—and I don’t pretend to be.

Then Chelsea McQuaid and her six orphaned nieces and nephews came along and complicated the ever-loving hell out of my life. Now I'm going to Mommy & Me classes, One Direction concerts, the emergency room, and arguing cases in the principal's office.

Chelsea’s too sweet, too innocent, and too gorgeous for her own good. She tries to be tough, but she’s not. She needs someone to help her, defend her…and the kids.

And that — that, I know how to do.

  11. I like that choice of author dinner companions.

I don't really have a preference of when I read. It's more when I get some undisturbed time to myself. ;) I have a cozy chair out on the porch and one inside in the family room that are both favorite reading spots.
