Give Me The Heroines Who Get Stuff Done
God save me from wishy-washy heroines.
When I lose myself in a book, I want to root for someone who knows what they want and goes after it. Oh sure, they may not have always been like that but they've come into their own. Why? Because as Tina Fey and Amy Poehler put it so well on Saturday Night Live: Bitches get stuff done.
Really, life is to short and there are too many awesome books out there to read to spend time with a whiner. I'm not alone in that right?
That's one of the things I love most about Veronica Kwon from my novella Jax and the Beanstalk Zombies, she gets stuff done. One of my favorite scenes is her getting ready to face down a horde of zombies.
“An hour later she had her armaments laid out in an orderly line across her cot. Two knives with serrated blades. What looked like a leopard-print lipstick case but was actually mace strong enough to knock out a troll. A travel-sized flying carpet. A fistful of throwing stars.
Finally, a charmed hand scythe that melded with her hand, giving her a magical claw to shred her enemies. She'd already packed her tool kit with a packet of fairy dust, throwing stars and a pack of spearmint gum. Her lucky scarab beetle was tucked safely into a pocket above her heart. Jax had found the golden amulet in an Egyptian tomb and given it to her early on in their relationship, telling her it symbolized the renewal of life and would bring her luck. It was a silly superstition, but it had been her constant companion for seven years and she wouldn't leave it behind now.
While contemplating whether to bring her Japanese Chisa Katana sword, a tapping sounded on her tent flap. She'd wrapped her hands about the handle of the two-foot-long blade before she'd even finished exhaling.”
Now this is a girl who would never make it through a TSA screening.
But that's what it takes to steal the golden goose, survive a zombie attack and fall in love with Jax, who smells like Southern sex god and has the skills to back it up. :)
A big thank you to Dani for letting me hang out with y'all today. And I'm always building my TBR pile, who are some of your favorite heroines that I need to read about?
You know there’s trouble ahead when zombies aren’t your biggest worry.
The treasure hunter… Veronica Kwon is determined to be the only person in control of her destiny. After surviving a broken engagement and turning her back on her wealthy manipulative father, she’s started a treasure hunting company and is ready for the adventure of a lifetime.
The ex-fiance… Jax Taylor is a Southern charmer with enough sex appeal to melt the polar ice caps. He disappeared three months before their wedding and swore he’d never cross paths with Veronica again.
The magic beanstalk… Brought together again by their dying mentor, who has found three enchanted beans, Veronica and Jax agree to an uneasy partnership. Together they’ll climb a magic beanstalk to the cloud kingdom, but will their destiny be the riches they so desire, the passion they thought dead…or will the undead get them first?

ReplyDeleteBarrie
Oh Barrie, that is super sweet of you to say. I am a total fan of the story, of course. :)
ReplyDeleteWhat a great post. This book sounds awesome. Loved the excerpt, want this book. Some of my favorite heroines are Cat from Jeaniene Frost's Night Huntress series. She is my favorite. But also like Anita Blake from Laurell K Hamilton, Beth, Bella, & Payne from JR Ward's Black Dagger Brotherhood, and Madison from Gracen Millers Genesis Series. I am a book lover and love all kinds of different books and authors.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the chance to win this awesome prize pack.
