Elle James spent twenty years in South Central Texas, ranching horses, cattle, goats, ostriches and emus. A former IT professional, retired Army and Air Force Reservist, she’s proud to be writing full-time, penning intrigues and paranormal adventures that keep her readers on the edge of their seats or laughing out loud. Now, living in northwest Arkansas, she’s given up wrangling cattle and exotic birds to wrangle her muses, a malti-poo and a yorkie. When she’s not at her computer, she’s traveling, out snow skiing, boating, or riding her four-wheeler, dreaming up new stories.
Places to find Elle:
First off, can you tell us a bit about you?
I spent twenty years in South Central Texas, ranching horses, cattle, goats, ostriches and emus. A former IT professional, retired Army and Air Force Reservist, I'm proud to be writing full-time, penning intrigues and paranormal adventures that keep my readers on the edge of their seats or laughing out loud. Now, living in northwest Arkansas, I've given up wrangling cattle and exotic birds to wrangle my muses, a malti-poo and a yorkie. When I'm not at her computer, I'm traveling, out snow skiing, boating, or riding my four-wheeler, dreaming up new stories.
Did you always want to be a writer?
Yes, from first grade when I wrote a story about a princess in a castle. It wasn't until my 40th birthday before I got serious about publishing. I dreamed I'd make a living at it. Happy me!
What kind of writer are you? Panster or Plotter?
I'm a plotter. I like to know where I'm going. I have a really lousy memory and I need the structure to see me through some of the more complicated plots that come with writing suspense and mysteries.
Where do your ideas come from?
Everywhere! Newspapers, movies, books whose stories I want to twist, conversations, titles, songs, people watching, travel, my friends. Ideas are everywhere, I just have to be awake to recognize them. Oh, wait, sometimes they come in my dreams.
A la Twitter style, can you describe your book (or series) in 140 characters or less.
Detective assigned to protect a mafia informant lands in the bayou surrounded by voodoo hexes, a huge family, a hot bayou babe and danger..
What are some of your favorite kinds of stories to read?
I love all kinds of stories from contemporary, cowboys, suspense, paranormal, young adult, new adult...you name it! As long as it has a happy ending, I love it!
Do you have a favorite book and if so what is it?
I loved Jennifer Cruisie's Fast Women and Pamela Morsi's Simple Jess. I love reading comedy and I love books with loads of emotion. And don't forget my happy ending.
What are the scenes that are the hardest for you to write?
Stuff that comes in between the action. I love to keep the story moving, but I know the characters need time to breathe and regroup as well as discuss what they've learned and how it applies to their situation.
If you could have dinner with any three authors, who would you choose and why?
JK Rowling. Harry Potter stories were to die for!
Last question, are you working on anything right now?
When am I not working? I'm writing a paranormal story for Harlequin Nocturne tentatively called The Beast. It's a different take on a classic story Beauty and the Beast, set in Chicago.
If you could have your choice of a leading man in the story of your life, which actor would you choose for your hero?
A little magic goes a long way…
Alexandra Belle Boyette is closing in on the big 3-0 and her mama has made it her mission to marry her off. In the tiny parish of Bayou Miste, deep in the Louisiana swamps, finding suitable hubby material can be a challenge—and Alex would rather not rely on magical spells to do the trick. But there is a sexy new man in town who might fit the bill...
Ed Marceaux is in Bayou Miste to safeguard a key witness to a Louisiana Mafia murder. He must keep an eye out for suspicious characters—but the place seems to be full of them! What could be stranger than a woman dressed in a sexy nightgown chasing a naked man down the street? The enchantingly gorgeous Alex Boyette certainly makes it worth his while to find out…
Add a Voodoo spell gone wrong, and voila! madness—and love—ensues.

My movie/tv star leading man would be Tom Selleck or Sam Elliott or maybe Tom Hanks.
ReplyDeleteElle, you said you like to travel -- where is your favorite place in 1) Texas/Arkansas, 2) United States, 3) world?
Do I have to have a favorite? In Texas, I love to visit San Antonio. I lived there for 15 years and loved the area. In Arkansas, I love the area around Jasper where I go floating on the Buffalo River. In the United States? I love visiting the Rockies, Yellowstone National Park, Grand Canyon, New Orleans, NYC, oh, there are too many to choose from! And the world, don't get me started! I've visited Italy and loved it. Ireland, loved it! Paris, loved it! Australia, New Zealand, Hawaii, London, Germany, loved them all. Can't wait to explore more. Next on my bucket list is Austria, Switzerland and southern Germany.
DeleteRobert Downey Jr. or Chris Hensworth.
ReplyDeleteThanks :-)

Great excerpt and interview! As for leading man, I do love looking at Hugh Jackman, but I imagine his wife would be less pleased if I decided to steal him away ;)

Hugh Jackman and Chris Hemsworth! Woot! Oh, but I too believe Tom Hanks would be not only nice, but fun!
ReplyDeleteMatthew McConaughey would be my first choice, Sean Connery my very close second. A younger Sean Connery would trump all, just love that sexy British voice.
