My Favorite Book Couple with Maggie Robinson

Maggie Robinson is a former teacher, library clerk and mother of four who woke up in the middle of the night, absolutely compelled to create the perfect man and use as many adjectives and adverbs as possible doing so. A transplanted New Yorker, she lives with her not-quite perfect husband in Maine, where the cold winters are ideal for staying inside and writing hot historical romances. Her books have been or will be translated into French, German, Portuguese, Turkish, Russian, Japanese, Thai, Dutch and Italian.

I think I have too many favorite book couples to count, but I recently re-read Georgette Heyer's delightful Frederica, featuring a 24 year old sensible sister in charge of her lively family and the Marquis of Alverstoke, a jaded gentleman who thought he'd never find a woman to suit him. The book is very full of family members on both sides, and it is through dealing with them that the couple falls into friendship and, finally, love.

Mention Baluchistan Hound to any Heyer reader and they will remember to what lengths the marquis goes to keep Frederica and her family out of scrapes. Alverstoke is used to raising eyebrows but never a finger to help anyone but himself, but somehow it's impossible for him to resist Frederica. Quote:

Then came Frederica, upsetting his cool calculations, thrusting responsibilities upon him, intruding more and more into the ordered pattern of his life, and casting him into a state of unwelcome doubt. And, try as he would, he could discover no reason for this uncomfortable change in himself. She had more countenance than beauty; she employed no arts to attract him; she was heedless of convention; she was matter-of-fact, and managing, and not at all the sort of female whom he had ever wished to encourage. Furthermore, (now he came to think of it), she had foisted two troublesome schoolboys on to him, which was the last thing in the world he wanted!

There's nothing I like better than a man who thinks he's seen and done everything until confronted by a woman who wakes him up to the world around him. Frederica is heartwarming and hilarious in turns, and highly recommended!

Rich, handsome, darling of the ton, the hope of ambitious mothers and despair of his sisters, the Marquis of Alverstoke sees no reason to put himself out for anyone. Until a distant connection, ignorant of his selfishness, applies to him for help. Plunged into one drama after another by the large and irrepressible Merriville family, Alverstoke is surprised to find himself far from bored. The lovely Charis may be as hen-witted as she is beautiful but Jessamy is an interesting boy, and Felix an engaging scamp. And, most intriguing of all, their strong-minded sister Frederica, who seems more concerned with her family's welfare than his own distinguished attentions ...

Frederica is a typically spirited, delightful, pulse-quickening historical romance from the author whose enormous devoted readership continues to this day.

Ever since Mary Evensong’s elderly Aunt Mim got sick, Mary’s masqueraded as the owner of the Evensong Agency, finding housemaids, husbands and solving pesky problems for the peerage. Someday she’d like to shake off her silvery wig and spectacles and be the young woman she truly is. But desperate clients are waiting for “Mrs. Evensong” at the office.

Like a scandalous Scottish baron. Honor forbids Lord Alec Raeburn from explaining the suspicious circumstances surrounding his wife’s death, but he knows who’s responsible. He just needs to hire an actress to lure the scoundrel into a trap.

After listening to Raeburn’s story—and seeing him in his kilt—Mary knows the perfect person.

Letting her red hair down, she heads off to the Scottish Highlands to pose as a seductress, but soon finds herself with more than her virtue at stake in a tug-of-war between two powerful men. She could wind up in danger—or in the heart of the highlander.

  5. Hi Maggie! I was about to mention how Anna Campbell is always extolling the virtues of Heyer books when I saw she was the first to comment on your post. Figures! *grin*

I have yet to read a Heyer book. (Yes, I know. Where have I been?) I think this may be the one that I download and take to the beach with me in June. Love the sound of it! :)

  6. Love, love, love Georgette Heyer, Maggie. Great memory: My hubby presented me with a full boxed set of Heyer's romances upon the birth of our first child, a son, while I was in the hospital. Surprised me beyond words and pleased me immeasurably. Quite a gift, huh? In any event, this is a great prize for a giveaway...plus your very own wonderful story. Thanks for your participation on this tour and for this post! jdh2690@gmail.com

  14. I've got your book on my wish list, Maggie, since I adore highland romances. But I've never read a Heyer book. I was a bit afraid to admit that until I saw PJ's comment above, so at least I don't feel all alone being Heyer-less. ;)
