Guest Post with Author Sabrina Jeffries and Giveaway

Sabrina Jeffries (When the Rogue Returns) is the NYT bestselling author of 37 novels. With over 7 million books in print, the North Carolina author never regrets leaving her budding career in academics for the joy of writing fun fiction.

Why I Hate Titling Books

I admit it—choosing a title for this book was a royal pain in the arse. My original choice was The Science of Seduction, because the hero is kind of a geek—a handsome, well-built, rich lord geek who doesn’t like people. Much. Except maybe the heroine. I also thought it would go along with The Art of Sinning, but my publishing team said it sounded too, well, science-y and not romance-y enough (I guess the word “seduction” didn’t make up for “science”).

They suggested The Alchemy of Attraction. Okay, how many of you know what alchemy means without looking it up? And for those who do, how many of you heard the word and instantly thought of medievals and knights in armor? Is there anyone left now? Anyone? Anyone?

That’s what I thought. So I pondered a while and came up with The Study of Seduction, which was less science-y, but still geeky. Then, to seal the deal, I ran all three titles by my street team. Out of 35 responses, over half preferred The Study of Seduction to either of the other two. The final score was 18 for Study, 9 for Science, and 8 for Alchemy. So science really didn’t go over well, which I find interesting. I’ve always gone for geeks.

So now I’m curious. Which title would make you pick it up? Does “alchemy” make you think of medieval romances? Does science put you off? Any other suggestions? (I hope to be titling a whole lot more books as The X of X, assuming that readers like the series. My next one is The Danger of Desire.) Anyone who makes a suggestion will be entered to win a copy of both The Art of Sinning and What Happens Under the Mistletoe, the first two stories in the Sinful Suitors series!

The Study of Seduction (Sinful Suitors, #2)
When Edwin Barlow, the Earl of Blakeborough, agrees to help his best friend’s impetuous ward, Lady Clarissa Lindsey, in her time of need, he knows he’s in for trouble. He’s been hunting for someone to wed, and she’ll just get in the way. Although captivated by the whip-smart, free-spirited beauty, he fears she’d be all wrong as a wife … if she would even take such a gruff cynic for her husband. Too bad he wants nothing more than to have her for his own.

Clarissa has no intention of marrying anyone—not Edwin, whom she’s sure would be an overbearing husband, and certainly not the powerful French diplomat stalking her. But when matters escalate with the diplomat, she chooses Edwin’s gallant offer of a marriage between friends in hopes that it will deter her stalker. She expects nothing more than an amiable union, but their increasingly tempestuous kisses prove more than she bargained for. When her stalker’s vow to expose the lovers’ deepest secrets threatens to destroy their blossoming attraction, will their tenuous bond withstand public ruin, or will Edwin lose all that’s important to him to protect his bride?

  4. I'm horrible at these things lol. But if you have another science one , perhaps The Risk of Chemistry but again maybe not romance enough. If you have one with some sort of wager you could do The Gamble of Temptation. Or perhaps The Venture of Enticement, The Peril of Flirtation, or The Hazard of Courtship.

  5. I would have gone with Alchemy :) But your title works.

  7. The Study of Seduction is a good title. Certainly not Alchemy because I bet a lot of people aren't familiar with the word.

    2. That really was the problem, I think. Glad you like the title!

  8. I liked The Study of Seduction. Even though I love my geeky, quiet men...I still liked this title best!

    1. Well, my hero is geeky and quiet, so you should like him, too.

  9. I like The Alchemy of Seduction, but The Study of Seduction is probably a better title to get people to pick up the book.

  10. I do like the chosen title for this book. Read as an ARC, loved it and the characters especially Edwin.
How about The Experience of Ecstasy or is that just silly?

    1. That's not silly at all. I'll have to keep that in mind.

  12. Study is nice but I quite like Alchemy too! How about 'Lord and Master' for a title?

    1. I think someone has already done that one. I'll have to check.

    1. I'm so glad you're enjoying the series! I actually proposed The Taste of Temptation, but there's a lot of books with that title, so I just don't know.

  14. I would have gone with Study of Seduction (although I do like Science of Seduction). I know what alchemy is but only because I've read so many books (if school had been as interesting as reading my novels I would have been an A+ student!).

  16. I like The Alchemy of Attraction - I think of turning lead into gold with alchemy. Sort of like turning a hero into a HERO.

  17. I like The Science of Seduction, but honestly, it's Sabrina Jeffries, and it could be called anything. This series is just too spectacular to squabble over a mere title!

  18. I'd love The Alchemy of Attraction to be the title since it triggers my curiosity due to "Alchemy" word.

  19. The Study of Seduction is good but I would have voted for The Alchemy of Attraction. Even though it does invoke a sense of the medieval periods, that time also strikes me as romantic, full of heroes and quests!

    1. Yes, but it's not set then. So it would evoke the wrong period and confuse readers, it seems to me.

  20. It is such a great book and I love the title.

  21. I like "The Alchemy of Attraction". If folks don't know what 'Alchemy' means they can look it up and learn something!

  22. Alchemy does make me think medieval but I really like that title. I'm horrible at coming up with suggestions maybe Dreaming of Desires? (But that implies no action...)

  23. As a reader, I wouldn't have any issues with the use of the word Science although I do like Alchemy and Study better. But then again, I'd read anything written by Sabrina Jeffries!!! :)

  24. I do like the name The Study of Seduction and I've heard wonderful things about it! I do like The Science of Seduction but I guess that's only because I'm a geek myself ;)

The Art of Sinning would suit better to a couple in the art dealing business or an artistic person. The Alchemy of Attraction? No. You are absolutely right when saying it sound to medieval and to me it sounds mages and wizards so scrap that. Now The Chemistry of Seduction, but again that's only because I'm a geek and I know about the periodic table, ha!

    1. The hero of The Art of Sinning is an artist, so yes, that's why we chose the title. I'm not a science geek but I was a math geek, so I get it. The hero of this book is a lord who happens to like making automatons--as I said, geeky. :-)

  25. I'm in favor of "Science". But, I'm a long time fan of Doctor Who, so... Still a place for us geeks in romance, though. Georgette Heyer had steam engines and Hot air balloon Ascensions. Gail Carriger has done wonders with SteamPunk. Romance is what you make it. Continue to write it as well as you have, and we will always be here to read it. Regardless of title. It's never your titles I look for, it's your By-Line.

  26. Oh I do like them both, but The Study of Seduction would pull me in reading the title!
