Hello everyone! I am so thrilled to be here today on Ramblings From this Chick to, well, do some rambling. See, I had a new book release on Monday—HER UNEXPECTED ENGAGEMENT, second in the Checkerberry Inn series—and it’s got me all sorts of chatty. In case you missed hearing about the release, no worries – I’m sure there will be a wee bit of information in this post about the book. ;-)
So what’s HER UNEXPECTED ENGAGEMENT about? Second chances. Do overs. Picking up the pieces after what you thought was your happily ever after goes and falls apart.
Does this resonate with anyone?
I have to be honest—most of the stories I enjoy as a reader are pretty simple. Boy meets girl, girl likes boy, they fall in love, yadda yadda yadda. Of course, there’s usually plenty of conflict thrown in along the way—bad guys, grouchy neighbors, job loss, old flames coming back to haunt them, etc. But for this book (and honestly, this series) as an author I wanted to dive in a bit deeper. Wanted to take broken characters and bring them a love that could help them shine again. And, of course, do it with plenty of snark and heart thrown in along the way.
Am I sufficiently rambling yet?!
Since I’m being honest, I might as well throw in that Stephanie Fitzpatrick and I, unfortunately, have more in common than I’d intended. Though I’ve been fairly quiet about this before now, my own HEA dissolved after Stephanie’s story was mostly done, leaving me, well, quite broken as well.
No, I wasn’t married to a golf pro (darn it—think of the money I could have received in that split!) or cheated on, but the loss and dark days that followed were ones I could appreciate even better as this novel’s edits were underway. I suppose that while I was helping Steph get over her loss, she was also helping me.
Characters can be great for that, you know. Built in therapy. ;-)
Even so, I worried that readers might find Stephanie to be too…down. Or too jaded about relationships. So who better to partner her with than a guy who’s sworn off relationships from the age of ten on, right? LOL Okay, I’m not that cruel…so I made that playboy-for-life have one major source of Kryptonite—his childhood best friend and the one that got away: Stephanie Johnson Fitzpatrick.
And I have to tell you, I loved writing them. Miles cared so much for her, and she for him, that helping them find love was a natural progression. Them embracing it, of course, wasn’t quite as easy. There’s a scene in the book that makes me cry every time I read it. (And let me tell you—during edits, there were many a tissue consumed!) Thankfully, though, they grow through the conflict, and the tissues are eventually set aside. ;-)
And while real life isn’t always so neat and tidy, I do hope this story gives readers hope. Because I know full well I’m not the only divorcee out there. Or widow. Or single.
But just because life doesn’t go as planned doesn’t mean there ISN’T a plan, or that happily ever after isn’t still in our future. Until then, I’m hoping we can all find a little bit of hope in Stephanie and Miles’s BLISS.
Who’s with me?
Thanks for reading my ramblings today! Be sure to comment below for your chance to win one of two free ebook copies of the first Checkerberry Inn novel, HER UNEXPECTED DETOUR (or another from my backlist if you’ve already paid the inn a visit). Happy reading, everyone!
Sometimes you’ve got to fake it ‘til you make it…Stephanie Fitzpatrick wanted out of the spotlight after her pro-golfer husband was caught on camera cheating. But when she returns to Michigan for a job interview and some much-needed R&R, a fib told by her well-meaning sister has her looking for a temporary fiancĂ©, or she can kiss her new start good-bye.Desperate to hide the truth, she goes to the one man who can help—her former best friend.Miles Masterson is relieved to see the Checkerberry Inn beginning to thrive once more. Not only does it ease his mind about his grandmother’s financial future, but also about his decision to finally escape town. But then one all grown up and sexy as hell friend from the past shows up needing rescue. Now the temptation to change the "temporary" arrangement into something more is making it harder to think about leaving.
