Review: Tangled Up in Blue by J.D. Brick

Tangled Up in Blue is the first book in the Ikana College series by J.D. Brick. I have to say that the blurb is what drew me in here, as I didn't like either cover I have seen for this book. I wasn't digging the guitar cover, and while the other one looks good at first glance it also looks as though the guy is trying to eat the poor girl's face. But after reading the blurb, I knew I wanted to read this one despite the covers. I will also say that this book does end with a cliffhanger. Not sure how I missed that before starting this one, but suffice it to say I was shocked when this one ended and wasn't over.

When Keegan needs to move out of the dorms quickly, she ends up at the one place she can quickly find with a vacancy. She is the youngest editor ever for her campus newspaper, and besides the paper she also needs to focus on her grades. So when she realizes that her new house and roommates are known for their parties, she immediately knows that she is in for a change. But Keegan and Blue are instantly drawn to one another, and though they know they should stay away from one another find themselves unable to fight the connection between them. With Keegan's reason for leaving her dorm room still out there though, these two will have more to worry about than just falling for the last person that they expected.

I liked Keegan and Blue. I didn't necessarily care for their crazy names, but I did like that they had a story behind them and that the author made that such a large part of the story. As much as I liked these characters though, I have to say that for some reason I just didn't ever feel connected to them. Not sure what it was, but there was just this disconnect there between me and their story and it had me wanting to put this book down more than once. I did like them and it wasn't as though there was anything bad about them, I just never truly felt invested in their story. Keegan was smart and dedicated to being successful at what she did. She was pretty straight-laced and even a bit naive at times. Blue was pretty easy-going and liked to have a good time, yet beneath the surface he had a lot he was dealing with. He didn't let others in easily and yet he found it easy to with Keegan. I liked these two together, and it was clear that they had a lot of chemistry and a connection that just kept getting stronger.

There were a few things that kept this story from being one that I loved besides just my disconnect from the characters. I found things to be a bit over the top at times with the dialogue and stories, and it just didn't feel natural to me. Things felt a bit forced, and I just didn't enjoy that. I also hated the repeated use of the word "loins". I have no idea why that was necessary to this story, but it seriously got on my nerves and just felt odd. This wasn't some old school bodice ripper, but yet every time that word appeared it just gave this book a cheap cliched feel and I hated it. I will say that while there were enjoyable parts here, overall this story wasn't my favorite. It does end with a cliffhanger, so there is a chance that I will read the next book just to see how things finish for Blue and Keegan. But with no release date in sight and no information about when to expect the next book, I have to say that I am not sure I will still feel the need to read it depending on when it does finally arrive. If you are okay with cliffhangers and can handle no knowing when the next book is coming, you might give this one a shot if you think it sounds like something you are interested in. But if you are waiting for a complete story before starting, you might want to keep an eye out for the sequel to this one before you dive in.

Review: Unclaimed Regrets by Stacy M. Wray

Unclaimed Regrets is my first book by Stacy M. Wray. The blurb of this one instantly drew me in, and I had to read this second chance love story! There was a lot to like here, and I did enjoy most of this story. However there were a few things that I had some problems with, and that kept me from really being able to love this book. I will look for more from Wray in the future though.

Adelyn Winters loves her job and all that she has accomplished, yet she is still just going through the motions. She has a great family and best friend, and yet she has never been able to forget the guy she fell in love with years before. When she gets an invite to her reunion, she knows that she needs to go back to get closure one and for all. But when she comes face to face with Trey Masterson, all those feelings come right back. Trey and Addie thought that they would be together forever, but neither one of them really know what happened to cause it all to go wrong. But with all the obstacles from their past as well as their present threatening their relationship, will they be able to rekindle what they once had? Or will there be too many things standing in their way?

I liked both Addie and Trey. They had a great connection when they first met, and it felt so natural to me. With each new piece of their past that was revealed, I fell right along with them. That hadn't changed even with all that they had been through. I did think that these two had a serious lack of communication, and I wanted to shake them both several times for not talking to one another. When they were together they were great, but I wish that it wouldn't have taken so much to get there. These two were sweet and sexy together, and I really liked them for one another. I did think that Trey had a tendency to be a real jerk at times though, and that was really hard to get over for me. He seemed to have absolutely no patience or understanding for all that Addie had been though, especially when it came to Amanda. The worst part was that I didn't even understand how he could be friends with Amanda. After everything that she had done to Addie, it wasn't ever justifiable to me that he would be friends with her especially since he knew her true motives.

I think that if these two had talked more and sorted out their issues this book would have been a lot easier to really get into. The back and forth got to be a bit too much though, and I thought that these two had plenty of opportunities that they could have worked things out much sooner. The Amanda thing just felt drawn out though, and I wish that hadn't kept going for as long as it did. It seemed far too often that she got in the way of Trey and Addie finding happiness together, and I couldn't get over how easily she was able to repeatedly do it. I did like that we got to see Addie and Trey's past and their present though, and that we got both of their POVs. I think it added a lot to the story, and it allowed the reader to get to know these characters really well. Overall, I think that this one had a lot of promise and I did enjoy it. I loved these two together, but the issues I mentioned this one was good when it could have been great.

ARC Review: Playing with Fire by Lexi Ryan

Playing with Fire is the first book in Lexi Ryan's new Mended Hearts Series, which features characters from New Hope. If you are a fan of Lexi Ryan's, you will recognize many familiar faces here. The Mended Hearts series books can each stand on their own, but the characters are interconnected and are best when read in order for full enjoyment. It is not necessary to have read any of the previous books to understand Playing with Fire, but if you are going to read any of the books I would recommend at least reading the Here and Now series since Max plays such a huge part in those books. If you haven't read those books though, beware of spoilers for those books below.

Dr. Phoenix Reid doesn't let many others close, and she definitely doesn't tell them about her past. She prefers to keep things private, but one night with Max Hallowell changes everything. She thought that she could keep things to one night of pleasure, but Max doesn't seem to be giving up. He wants Nix, and is willing to give her all the time that she needs. But Nix knows that she needs to keep away from Max in order to keep him and his daughter safe. But what happens when she starts to let Max in, and he is determined to help her even after learning everything? Can they find a way to make sure that Nix is safe and have a chance at a future together, or will everything go up in flames?

I really loved Max in the previous books, and I really felt badly for him. I always thought that Hannah needed to be with Nate, but I couldn't help but fall in love with Max. He had made some huge mistakes, but he was a great guy that gave so much of himself to others. My heart broke for him when he lost everything, but I was glad that he was able to focus on the positive in his life and I thought that he was a great dad to Claire. That was even more evident here, and he was so adorable with her and with everything he did for her. But I really liked him with Nix. He was every bit the good guy we have come to know and love, but he was also so supportive. I loved that he didn't judge her or give up on her. Nix did annoy me a bit in this book if I am honest. While I understood where she was coming from once all was revealed, her hot and cold act got old here. I was ready for it to be over before it was, and I wanted her to wake up and see just what she was at risk of losing with Max. They were so good for one another, and I wanted her to see that sooner than she did.

Overall, this was a good story though and I really liked how everything turned out. I love Max, and it was great to finally see him find some happiness! I was shocked when their connection first started to happen in previous books, because I never saw it coming. But throughout this book it become so clear how perfect they were for one another. I loved seeing familiar faces, and it was really great that they were all so supportive of Nix and Max together, because there very easily could have been some drama there with everyone's intertwined pasts. I am looking forward to more in this series though, and I cannot wait to get Cade's story next!

ARC Review: Schooled by Piper Lawson

Schooled is Piper Lawson's debut novel and the first book in her Travesty series. This book was a really great debut for her, and I enjoyed it a lot. There were a few things that kept this one from being a home run for me, but it was a pretty solid read and I am looking forward to more from her in the future.

Alexis Caine thought that her life was on track as she had planned until her boyfriend of four years breaks up with her before their senior year of college. She spent the summer in NY interning for a magazine and trying to forget about Jake. When she shows up back at school, she is determined to focus on her grades and her future fashion design business with her best friend Ava. But what she doesn't count on is Ava's younger brother Dylan Cameron being all grown up and sexier than ever. Though Dylan has a reputation, the two start to develop a friendship and Lex realizes that Dylan is far from what others think of him. But Dylan threatens all the plans that Lex has made, and she is determined to let nothing stand in her way.

I really liked Dylan. He was sweet and loyal, and a really great guy. He was so much more than his reputation, and I loved that he let others believe whatever they wanted about him without trying to justify everything he did. He didn't need to get them to change their minds, and he was happy to do what he did without every getting the credit for it. I thought that he was great for Lex, and it was great to see him never give up on her. He was exactly what she needed, and I liked that he kept pursuing her even when she would push him away. I had a few issues with Lex, but mostly just because her pushing Dylan away got old. It was clear that she liked him and that they were great together, so I wanted her to stop with the games and just date him openly. I thought that she took it too far, and I felt bad for Dylan at times. These two had so much chemistry though, and I liked seeing their connection strengthen as they got to know one another again.

Overall, this was a great debut for Piper Lawson. I liked the characters and the story and I am interested to get Ava's story next. I could have done without so much of Lex pushing Dylan away and fighting what was between them though. I also didn't like that Dylan was trying to get Lex to be with him, and yet every time that she would push him away he seemed to gravitate back to Marcia. He would say that she wouldn't get it into her head that he didn't want her, and yet it didn't really seem to me that he ever made the effort to get Marcia to back off. I did feel badly for Lex having to see them together at times, but I also felt like that was partly Lex's fault for doing to Dylan what she did. But I was glad that there wasn't cheating and Dylan didn't try to be with Marcia just to make Lex jealous. That was nice and refreshing to see in a NA story. I would recommend this one if you like NA stories and it was kind of nice to see a guy go after his older sister's best friend, when it is usually a guy going after the younger girl. I am looking forward to more from Piper Lawson and the Travesty series.

ARC Review: What the Lightning Sees: Part 3 by Louise Bay

Part 3 of What the Lightning Sees picks up where Louise Bay left us after Part 2. Make sure that you have read the first two installments before starting this one since Haven and Jake's story continues from one part to the next. After the huge bombshell that was dropped at the end of part two, Jake is left trying to figure out what he should do. He just won Haven back and knows that this will change everything for not only his life, but the future he is building with Haven. Though he knows things are about to change, he is determined to make things work with Haven and will do whatever it takes to keep her from running. But can Jake and Haven have a future together when faced with their biggest obstacle yet?

As with previous installments, Jake and Haven each had their moments when I loved them and when they drove me nuts. Things were so complicated in this installment, and they had so much to try and deal with. One thing that I absolutely loved though was the progress that Haven had made. When Jake let her know what was going on, I felt like she handled things so well and didn't try to run. She faced them and was the support he needed. She loved him so much and I was glad to see that she had come so far. I felt like she had gained so much strength and maturity, and even when she was hurting she was able to see what she needed to do rather than what her fear and insecurities were telling her. Jake was also struggling with everything, and I felt really badly for him as well. He had so much on his plate and it was easy to see how much it was all weighing on him. I think that he handled things poorly a few times and that there were so many things that he should have seen coming, and yet I also understand that he was just trying to be the great guy that we know he is. I think that he should have fought harder for Haven at times, and I was disappointed that he didn't after everything that had happened in part 2. These two were meant to be together and made one another their best selves, so for him to just give that up without much of a fight was very frustrating to me.

I did like the ending though, and I was glad to see how things worked out for these two. I felt like it was inevitable that they would wind up together, because there was no other option to me. Jake and Haven's journey was far from easy, but I think that everything that they were dealt made them stronger in the long run. They grew as individuals as well as a couple, and I think that the progress they showed was interesting to see happen. Jake and Haven understood one another in a way that no one else did, and their connection just continued to get stronger. They had great chemistry and that never changed throughout the entire story. I will say that I loved the secondary characters in this serial, and I would love to get a story for Jake's sister Beth as well as a story for Haven's brother and best friend! I liked them a lot and would love to see what happens next for each of them. I think that this was a good story overall, and once you start reading these you won't want to stop. Haven and Jake are worth the read, and I look forward to more from Louise Bay in the future.

ARC Review: What the Lightning Sees: Part Two by Louise Bay

Part Two of What the Lightning Sees picks up right where Louise Bay left us at the end of Part One. If you haven't read part one, make sure that you read that before starting this one as the story continues from one installment to the next. Haven and Jake had been growing closer until Haven heard a conversation between Jake and her boss. Though Jake does his best to explain the situation to Haven, she realizes that he she can't let him continue to get under her skin. She decides to keep things strictly business between them from that point on. But when they get another assignment together, the subject brings forth anger and jealousy and forces them to face the feelings between them. Will Jake fight to get Haven back, or will they continue to try and ignore the connection between them?

I loved Jake and Haven so much in the first book, and for the most part that continued here. I did think that Jake gave up a bit too easily when it came to the trying to get Haven back. I wanted him to fight for her, and I felt like it took him far too long to get to the point that he should have been. He just accepted what Haven told him and allowed her to push him away without really allowing him to explain what had happened or what was going on between them. I wanted him to force the issue a bit more than he did. I also felt like he should have talked to her more about the situation with one of her dates, and why he wanted her to stay away from him. I understood his reasoning and that he had made a promise to his sister, but if he felt like she was in that much of a bad situation around this guy I felt like he should have been able to tell her because that was more important. I did like that Haven didn't change who she was after what she had heard. She remained true to herself and I really felt like that was important. I loved that she was independent and thought for herself, and she didn't allow others to tell her who she should be or what she should do.

Overall, this was a good installment and I am really needing the next installment. As with the first there is a cliffhanger and we are left wondering what will happen next for these two. I did think that there was a lot of angst and push and pull in this one, but I am enjoying the journey for these two. I like them together and I really think that they are good for one another. I am curious what Louise Bay has in store for these two next, and I am really looking forward to seeing how things play out. I really enjoy Louise Bay's writing style, and I think that her stories are well written and entertaining. I am looking forward to not only the next installment, but also to more from her in the future.

ARC Review: Lost Wishes by Kelly Gendron

Lost Wishes is the fifth Troublemaker Series book by Kelly Gendron, but each book is a standalone. I haven't read any of the previous books, and I wasn't lost with this one. You do get to see characters from the previous books though, so fans of the series will enjoy seeing some familiar faces. I have to say that I was originally drawn to this book with the blurb, I knew it was going to be emotional and hard to get through at times and yet sometimes I apparently like to torture myself. I am kind of a sucker for broken heroes, and what is more broken than a man who loses the love of his life and only lives for revenge?

Fallon O'Conner spends each day barely surviving. He fulfills his basic needs and waits for the man that killed his wife to be released from prison. In the three years that he has spent without his wife, Fallon has been with a lot of women yet he refuses to allow them to be at all intimate with him. He has sex, but he is strictly taking care of a physical need. But when Katie Rustle enters his life, he feels something different with her and knows that he needs to keep her far away from him. Katie was warned about the type of man that Fallon is, and she knows about his past. But she has a job to do, and she intends to see it through using everything she learned from being raised by a father that taught her being emotional was useless. But when Katie and Fallon are forced to spend more time together, they quickly begin to realize that they have no control over what is happening between them.

I have to say that I liked Katie at times, but I also struggled with her at others. Right away she comes off as strong and independent, she goes after what she wants and doesn't put up with anyone's crap. But then in the middle of the book, I felt like she pretty much lost all that and sort of allowed Fallon to push her around. She wasn't as take charge, and it was a bit disappointing to me. I did like how she finished the book though, and I thought that she was exactly what Fallon needed. She supported him and gave him everything she could while also showing her own vulnerability. Fallon was harder for me to like, and for most of this book he was an absolute jerk. He would have a few moments that things would turn around, but there were some times when he was really hard to take. I understand that he was still grieving and had a lot of pain and anger he was dealing with, but I expected to see more change in him over the course of the book rather than just at the end. I thought that these two were good for one another and you could tell that attraction was never an issue between them. But with the character issues, it made it hard to really get behind their story.

I also had a tough time really buying into their connection and relationship, considering that the whole thing happened over the course of about two weeks. These two started off as complete strangers and then ended up in love with one another super quickly, especially for a guy that only lived for revenge for his dead wife. It felt rushed and came off as unrealistic as far as time frame goes. I think maybe if Fallon hadn't spent the majority of this story pushing Katie away and saying that he couldn't give her what she wanted, that things might have felt more believable to me. But when he spent the whole book doing those things, it was hard to believe anything would just instantly change so drastically. I also thought that this book was very repetitive when it came to the dialogue. Fallon especially was always saying almost word for word the same things, and it was very noticeable to me. Overall this book was an okay read, but if I am honest I was a bit disappointed with it. I was thinking that this story would be really emotional and deep, and it ended up coming off as predictable and rushed. There wasn't really anything new or memorable here, so while I did finish the book and found parts enjoyable it isn't one that I will probably think about or read again.

ARC Review: What the Lightning Sees: Part One by Louise Bay

What the Lightning Sees Part One by Louise Bay was fantastic! I loved this first installment to her new novella series, and I honestly can't wait for more! Since this is the first part of three in the series, there is a cliffhanger. The ending left me wanting more, and I cannot wait for Part 2. I am so glad that I read this installment, even knowing that I have to wait for more, as I absolutely loved Jake and Haven together!

When Haven lands a huge story at her work, she knows that it is exactly what she needs in order to help her secure the promotion that she is after. She knows that she isn't well liked at the office, but she is determined to do her job as professionally as possible in order to achieve her goals. But when the new replacement photographer on the story shows up and it is another friend of her boss, she immediately suspects the worst. His friends are always rich and spoiled, and she hates that they have such a sense of entitlement. Things get off on the wrong foot between them, but knowing that they have to work together they form a sort of truce. The more time they spend together though, the more Haven begins to realize that she might have been wrong about Jake and the chemistry between them begins to grow. Soon they are both beginning to see each other in a new light and are wanting to explore the connection between them.

I will admit that I didn't like Haven at all at the beginning of this story. She came off extremely bitchy, and she was so judgmental. But soon we get to see more of her, and there was so much more than just her first impression. I loved seeing her with her best friend and brother, as it gave us a completely new side to her! She wasn't just the uptight and buttoned-up professional, but she was also able to let her hair down and have some fun. I was really glad that Jake got to see it as well, and I liked how he went about flirting with her. Jake wasn't like what Haven had first thought at all, and although he was rich, he had worked for everything he had. He was smart and successful, and I loved that he was determined to continue working though he didn't need to. He was a smart businessman, but he was also a great photographer that was really modest about his work. The chemistry he had with Haven was off the charts, and I loved that he was into her even when she was prickly. He knew just how to get her to shut up when needed, and I liked that he was able to see beneath her facade. He saw so much more in her than most people did at first glance, and I enjoyed seeing these two get to know one another.

Overall, this was a great first installment. The ending left me not only wanting more, but needing to know what would happen next! I loved Jake and Haven together, and I thought that they were perfect for one another. I loved the banter between them, and that combined with the sexual tension was enough to create the perfect build up to their inevitable explosion. There was so much going on between them, and I couldn't wait to see what would happen! I have to say that I am also really intrigued with Haven's brother Luke and her best friend Ash. They are so interesting to me, and I love what I am seeing between those two as well. I really hope that they continue to be such a big part of this story, because I love their relationships with Haven as well as the back and forth they have going on between them. Can't wait to see what happens next for all these characters, and part two cannot get here soon enough! I highly recommend this story, and I think that readers will really enjoy this story as much as I did.

ARC Review: Shaken, Not Stirred by Sawyer Bennett

Shaken, Not Stirred is the fifth and final book in the Last Call series by Sawyer Bennett. If you haven't read the previous books in the series it isn't a problem, because each book is a standalone. I would definitely recommend reading them though since they are really good. I was excited to read this one, because I knew there was more to Casey than we had previously seen. It was really nice to finally get to know her and to see what had made her the way she was.

Casey Markham doesn't do relationships. Though she is monogamous in her arrangements she prefers to keep things casual so that she doesn't get hurt. But she is tired of the same thing over and over, and finally begins to wonder if it is time to put the past behind her and move forward with her life. When she meets the sexy biker Tenn Jennings, she knows that things will be different with him. He isn't her normal type, and he has the ability to get under her skin. Though Casey would prefer to keep Tenn at arm's length, Tenn can't get her off his mind and is determined to show Casey that they should be together. But can Tenn get through to Casey, or will she continue to run from feeling anything too deep?

I really liked Tenn. He was this sexy alpha biker, with a total sweet side. He had a daughter that he absolutely adored, and it was clear he would have done anything for her. Same went for Casey though. He didn't let her get away with her normal crap, and he got her to see that what she was doing wasn't working for her. I liked that he challenged her, but that he also knew when not to push too much. He was also a super hot dirty talker, and I loved every bit of it! Casey had been keeping things casual with men that she knew she could never fall for. She knew that she would never get hurt if she never developed feelings for them. I understood so much more about her after getting some of her history, and things really started to make sense. I liked that she wanted to try for more with Tenn, and she really went through a lot of change in this book. She was also really fantastic with Tenn's daughter, and I loved how supportive she was instantly of his relationship with her. Tenn and Casey had so much chemistry, but I really loved seeing them develop such a strong emotional connection as well. These two were perfect for one another, and I really liked them together.

Overall, this was a really great addition to the series and I am sad that it's over. I really liked the characters, and I love the camaraderie of their group of friends. Each book in this series is a good story, and I loved getting to see more of each couple as the series continued. I think that Sawyer Bennett is a great writer, and this series was a lot of fun to read. For me, there were a few times that I thought that Casey acted a bit immaturely and I wanted her to see that she didn't need to keep pushing Tenn away. That along with the fact that the ending got a bit cheesy for me were the only things that kept this book from being a five star read for me. I have come to expect with Sawyer Bennett's books that you will get a great story every time with a lot of steam, and Shaken, Not Stirred definitely delivered. I can't wait to read more from her in the future.

ARC Review: One Last Song by S.K. Falls

I have been trying to put into words what I feel after reading One Last Song by S.K. Falls, and I find myself struggling. My thoughts are all over the place with this book because there were things that I liked and disliked with this book. I will say that this book wasn't what I had been expecting, and while the blurb did give you some of what this book is about it really didn't even begin to scratch the surface on what this book is. The one thing I can definitely say though is that this book will not be for everyone, and honestly I think it is one that each reader will have to give a shot in order to decide if it is for them or not. Please be aware that this book was previously released under the name Secret For A Song, but has since been gone through and revamped.

When she was seven years old, Saylor discovered that she could get her mother's attention by making herself sick. Otherwise her parents pretty much ignored her the rest of the time. Growing up she started looking for ways to make herself sick enough that they would give her attention, but not sick enough to really hurt or kill herself. She finally moved out on her own, but after another incident her mother made her return home and quit college. Looking for something more her therapist recommended that she find something to fill her time which is how she met Drew. Drew and Saylor instantly clicked and began spending time together. Their feelings for one another grew, and Saylor found herself feeling whole and happy for the first time in her life. But Drew has no idea what she has always done to herself or the truth about how they really came to meet. Though Saylor is finally doing better and wants to move forward with Drew, what will happen when the truth is finally revealed?

I loved Drew. He was sweet and caring, and I felt so badly for the situation he was in. He was always so supportive and loving with Saylor, and he really tried to always be there for her. I hated the fact that she was lying to him when he was offering so much to her without asking for anything in return. He never pushed with her, and I loved that he was able to give her such patience and trust. He definitely didn't deserve what he was getting in return. Saylor was a hard one for me to connect with. I didn't understand her at all as I have never been in a situation like hers. I could see that she clearly had issues, and I felt like a lot of it wasn't her fault. She was sick and didn't seem to be able to help herself, and a lot of that was the fault of her parents. They didn't seem to really care about her except when she inconvenienced them and embarrassed them. I liked who she started to become with Drew, and it was good to see her getting better. But she had so many times that she could have been honest and opened up to him, and that is why I felt like I just couldn't ever really get behind her. She chose not to be honest and to continue the charade.

One Last Song was different from anything I have ever read before, and it was heartbreaking and emotional. This book left me raw and unsure of how to feel. While I liked Drew a lot, I felt as though this book was mostly about Saylor. While there was some romance and Drew and Saylor were building a relationship, this book really centered around Saylor and her struggles. I wanted her to lean on Drew more and really allow him in. While the ending was good and I liked it, I also felt like it was pretty rushed and left a lot to the imagination. I don't care for things to be left so open with a standalone story, and I really wanted to see a bit more down the line for these characters. While we did get an ending, I felt like it was sort of bittersweet. I would have loved to have been given a bit more of these characters and what happened next. I really cannot say whether I would recommend this book or not, because honestly I feel like this is one that you just have to read and see for yourself. I will say that some of the things that Saylor did to herself were a bit gross to me and made me squirm. Those parts were hard for me to get through, but I felt like I had to see this one through.
