Why I Like Romance

Romance is such an intriguing topic to write about. There is something magical to falling in love that has to come about naturally, which is a challenge for a writer. Both characters have to have sizzling chemistry, but also have to have impediments along the way. The best romance pairs two unlikely candidates, two people from different sides of the tracks. Through their romance they learn more about the world and about the people on "the other side." Romance allows people to grow and mature, learning more about the world around them and more about themselves.

Type of stories I like to read and write

I love to read fantasy romance and science fiction romance. I love the fantasy worlds and the word building and descriptions that go along with genre fiction. Playing the Maestro is actually my first contemporary romance without the fantasy element. What I found was as I wrote it, I was more able to focus on the character motivations and their developing relationship. Even though I felt naked at first, it turned out to be a great growing experience for me as an author.

Melody Mires has sworn off dating musicians, but when the sexy European conductor Wolf Braun takes over her struggling symphony, her hesitation almost flies out the window with the notes of her flute—until he opens his mouth. Wolf is arrogant, haughty, and seems to have a personal vendetta against Melody. Oh, and he’s her boss. If she wants to keep her job as principal flutist, she’ll have to impress Wolf while simultaneously keeping her undeniable attraction to herself.

Wolf came to America to get as far away from his past as possible, and to recover some of the swagger he had as one of the world’s best maestros. He never imagined being forced to reassess the entire orchestra’s talent—and potentially fire anyone who doesn’t make his cut. Dating the attractive flutist is out of the question, but as their feelings reach a fever pitch, can they risk both their careers for a chance at love?

  4. I enjoyed reading Aubrie's introduction. I liked the part about the reasons she likes writing romance. I agree with her. I also enjoy fantasy romance, but I have never read any syfi romance. Aubrie is a new author to me and I think I am going to love reading her work. Thanks for the intro to this new author to me and thanks for this giveaway.

  8. This is definitely a book with a different setting -- I don't think I've read one with a symphony as a background. Thanks for sharing.

  11. Barrie,

I can't choose a favorite, because I love all of them like my children. But, the orchestra ones are probably the closest to my life as a musician. Thanks for commenting!

  12. Hi Aubrie- What made you want to write about a musician? Do you know any personally? I'm from a family full of musicians and I dated one before, too! I've decided that I don't really like dating them. You're always second to the music and if you don't like their music, it's kind of hard (for me, at least) to be with them.

  14. Meghan,

I wrote about musicians because I am one! That's what I do for a day job- classical flute. I figured I knew enough about them to write about them, so here it is!

  16. I've never read a contemporary romance novel that involved a classically trained musician. I have to say, the cover and blurb do an excellent job of promoting your book. I just added it to my Wish List and will be reading my copy soon!
