Pre-Date Playlist by Ali Novak
My story The Heartbreakers follows the adventures of Stella Samuel, an aspiring photographer whose sister Cara has cancer. Cara is obsessed with the Heartbreakers, a four piece boy band from Portland, Oregon. Even though Stella doesn’t like their music, she road trips to Chicago for an autograph session to get a few of her sister’s belongings signed. Before the event, Stella unknowingly bumps into Oliver Perry at Starbucks—lead singer for the Heartbreakers—which is how their romance begins.
Although they feel an instant connection, being in a relationship is difficult: Stella feels guilty hanging out with Oliver on tour while Cara is going through chemo back home; Oliver, on the other hand, wants to spend as much time with Stella as possible, but the band is falling apart and he needs to focus on his career. But even though Stella and Oliver have lots of obstacles to overcome, they still make time for dates. Here is a playlist that Stella would listen to as she gets ready for a date with Oliver:
Pre-date Playlist
1. The Weekend, “Earned It”
2. Maroon 5, “Sugar”
3. Tori Kelly, “Nobody Love”
4. Walk the Moon, “Shut Up and Dance”
5. Drake, “Best I Ever Had”
6. Fifth Harmony, “Sledgehammer”
7. Becky G, “Shower”
8. Timeflies, “All The Way”
9. Zendaya, “Replay”
10. Zedd, Selena Gomez, “I Want You to Know”
11. Natalia La Rose, Jeremih, “Somebody”
12. Rihanna, “Only Girl (In The World)”
13. Krewella, “Live for the Night”
14. Calvin Harris, Ellie Goulding, “I Need Your Love”
15. Justin Timberlake, T.I.,” My Love”
Stella will do anything for her sick sister, Cara—even stand in line for an autographed Heartbreakers CD…for four hours. She’s totally winning best birthday gift this year. At least she met a cute boy with soft brown hair and gorgeous blue eyes while getting her caffeine fix. Too bad she’ll never see him again.
Except, Stella’s life has suddenly turned into a cheesy love song. Because Starbucks Boy is Oliver Perry – lead singer for the Heartbreakers. And even after she calls his music crap, Oliver still gives Stella his phone number. And whispers quotes from her favorite Disney movie in her ear. OMG, what is her life?
But how can Stella even think about being with Oliver – dating and laughing and pulling pranks with the band – when her sister could be dying of cancer?
