A Blissfully Spooky Halloween with Melissa West

Melissa West writes heartfelt Southern romance and teen sci-fi romance, all with lots of kissing. Because who doesn't like kissing? She lives outside of Atlanta, GA with her husband and two daughters and spends most of her time writing, reading, or fueling her coffee addiction.

Years ago when I was a kid, I remember Halloween itself being a very spooky (like that?) day. In our neighborhood, all us kids would gather at one person’s house and watch scary movies until we were all successfully petrified.

One such Halloween, we were all in one of my friends’ basement, watching Halloween II, and suddenly we heard creaking on the stairs that led down to the basement. The bravest of our group tiptoed over to the stairs to get a peek, her eyes went wide, and she ran toward us whisper-screaming for us to run!

All the motivation we needed, we dipped outside and hid behind a patch of bushes, watching as a man dressed in all black came into the basement’s common room. Sure the house was being invaded by a serial killer, we ran with all our might to the closest friend’s house and called 911.
(Note: I have no idea why we didn’t just say something to a parent, lol.)

A cop showed up minutes later, and we revealed that the house was being broken into, that a murderer was inside, to hurry before he slaughtered the whole neighborhood!

Our group of five waited patiently at the friend’s house, shaking and scared out of our minds, only to have the cop return and explain that the man was a plumber, there to repair old pipes. Ha!

So, yeah, that was my singular run-in with a killer. I wish I could say it were my only run-in with a plumber. LOL!

What about you? What was your scariest childhood experience?

All's fair in love and war, especially in the Deep South...

Savannah Hale never planned to come back to Maple Cove, Georgia. Her hometown has too many painful memories, especially of her high school sweetheart, who was killed during combat. And yet here she is...broken-hearted from her mother's death and left to deal with the Hale family legacy—Maple Cove's landmark bed and breakfast. In need of repairs and near foreclosure, she’s hanging on to the B&B by a thread.

And the man out to buy it is the man she's never been able to forgive...or forget.

Former soldier Logan Park is haunted by memories of his own. Some are of his best friend. Others are filled with longing for the girl he could never have. Now Savannah is back, and their attraction can’t be denied. But Logan has already sacrificed everything to atone for his sins, and there’s no way he’ll let himself fall for a girl who might never love again.

  1. When I was about 8 or 9 trick or treating went from 6:00 to 10:00. We would end up a few miles away from our house by the end and the fastest way back home was having to walk through the woods. Most times we ended up running through the woods because we'd be so scared!
