A Blissfully Spooky Halloween with Ashlee Mallory

Ashlee was thirteen when she discovered her first Kathleen E. Woodiwiss book hidden away in her mom’s closet. After two days of staying home “sick” from school to finish it, she was hooked. Her rabid love for romance has continued ever since, and after a misadventure in the world of law, she finally settled into her dream job of writing about people finding their happily ever afters. Whether writing sweet contemporary romance or romantic thrillers and suspense, she aims to create down to earth heroines and heroes with small town heart.

It’s countdown to Halloween in our house and that means it’s time, once again, for the battle between my nine-year old son and I as to what scary movies he can and absolutely canNOT watch—at least for a few more years. If you’ve read my blog (and the numbers of views probably tells me I’m safe), you might have seen this topic has come up before.

But fast forward two years and he’s exhausted all of R.L. Stine’s Goosebumps and The Haunting Hour shows that steadily show up on Netflix and still thinks he is ready to watch…Cabin in the Woods.

Not. A. Chance.

Then a few nights ago he made a request that had me screaming (inside) with joy. He wanted to watch my all time favorite episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Season 4, episode 10 to be precise. HUSH.  It’s actually been at least a couple of years since I’d watched that episode and I was surprised he remembered. Ready to be thrilled, we sat back and watched it together and, even though all the sexual innuendo went over his head (hopefully!), he still got a kick out of the freaky “Gentlemen” and their minions.

Now I’m eagerly anticipating watching another of my favorite episodes with him from season 2—the Halloween episode that loosely inspired my second suspense book LOVE YOU MADLY—and I’m thinking of a few more.

So keeping in mind Halloween horror shows and episodes that are appropriate for 9-year olds and a few of the ones I wish I hadn’t seen until I was well past 18, I’ve put a little list of my top 5 favorites in honor of the season.

1. HUSH Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Season 4 Episode 10

2. HALLOWEEN Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Season 2 Episode 6

3. LADY IN WHITE

4. EXORCIST

5. POLTERGEIST

For a chance to win a digital copy of my new release, HER ACCIDENTAL HUSBAND (or any of my backlist) and a $5 Amazon gift card, comment below with the first introduction you had to the horror genre, be it a book (Salem’s Lot for me), movie or television show.

Once upon a road trip to Mexico...

Payton Vaughn's trip to Puerto Vallarta for her friend's wedding was her big escape from her ridiculously overbearing mother-oh, and that little matter with her cheating fiancé. Now, her flight's been cancelled, and she's crammed into a tiny car with the gorgeous-but-irritating best man.

Viva la road trip from hell...

Cruz Sorensen doesn't have time to babysit some spoiled socialite, even if she is the future daughter-in-law of the man who could change the fortune of his family's company. He has no business getting to know her better-not even for all the tequila in Mexico...until they wake up with grande-sized hangovers as man and wife.

Now Payton and Cruz must decide if they've reached the end of their journey...or the beginning of a new adventure.

  7. I used to watch a lot of "B" B&W movies fro the 50s and 60s on TV. The Tarantula was one of my first--tam by today's standards. Miss those UHF days of the 70s growing up.

  16. Nightmare on Elm Street is what I remember 'trying' to watch as a young kid. My sister loved those movies, and I just couldn't do it. Too scary.

  18. When I was ten I went to the movies and saw a horror film, I can't remember the name of it. But it cured me of watching them for life. My favorite movie that might be classified as horror is Alien, that movie scared the heck out of me, especially since I saw it the first night it came out and had no idea it was going to be that scary. :D
