Meet Nancy Lee Badger, author of My Dark Highlander.
She loves chocolate-chip shortbread, wool plaids wrapped around the trim waist of a Scottish Highlander, the clang of broadswords, and the sound of bagpipes in the air. After growing up in Huntington, New York, and raising two handsome sons in New Hampshire, she moved to North Carolina where she writes full-time. Nancy is a member of Romance Writers of America, Heart of Carolina Romance Writers, Fantasy-Futuristic & Paranormal Romance Writers, Triangle Area Freelancers, and the Celtic Heart Romance Writers.

Auras
In my latest Scottish time travel release, My Dark Highlander, I have gifted my heroine, Jenny Morgan, with the ability to read auras. Jenny is a modern-day veterinarian, and she uses her curse to help her treat sick animals. The same curse makes her want to avoid crowds. Too many auras make her ill.
To research auras, I found several definitions, shared here: Auras are a field of subtle yet luminous radiation that certain individuals can see surrounding a person or object. Some believe all living things possess auras. Many believe that the mention of holy bright lights and angelic halos in religious context are actually strong auras.
The Merriam-Webster Dictionary describes an aura as many things, such as:
- a : a subtle sensory stimulus (as an aroma) b : a distinctive atmosphere surrounding a given source
- : a luminous radiation : NIMBUS
- : a subjective sensation (as of lights) experienced before an attack of some disorders (as epilepsy or a migraine)
- : an energy field that is held to emanate from a living being
In my book, I chose not to go into the medical aspects of auras. In order to show my readers what Jenny sees, I used a couple of website about auras to include the color Jenny sees. Check out the website I used on human auras HERE
Much to my surprise, animals present different colors, and I used the chart I found to describe what Jenny sees when she treats sick animals, including my favorite Scottish beast, the Highland steer. Check out the animal chart HERE
Here is an excerpt:
Both cattlemen, and a relieved Denise, remained outside, while Jenny cooed to the cow. In an attempt to calm the large animal, she concentrated on its indigo blue aura. The intrusion of a stranger had darkened the color, which should be the red of vitality and stamina.
She’s in a lot of pain, she thought. No sense voicing her opinion, since she couldn’t explain how she knew. The reddish cow’s head hung below her knees, and her tongue drooped from the side of her mouth. A female of the Highland cattle species, she still weighed more than ten times Jenny’s weight.
“I am here to help you, sweetie,” she whispered.

When Jenny and Gavin Sinclair get together, her ability both shocks her and assists her when she wishes to keep her distance.
Here is an excerpt:
“I dare not resort to magic in a tent full of magical herbs and potions. Can ye use yer aura-reading ability and see if anyone is inside?”
She glared in the direction of what she assumed was Gavin's head. How did he know about her ability?
“ ‘Tis a discussion for another time, but Dorcas is free with the secrets of others.”
“I usually need to see a person, in order to read their aura.” His request was a challenge. She stumbled against a table, and the clink of potion bottles made her stand still, and close her eyes.
Silly, I can’t see anything, anyway.
Relaxing both her body and mind, she opened her senses. Gavin’s aura jumped out at her, as brilliant as a solar flare, and iridescent pink with sexual desire. The glow widened, and the hot zap of desire flew down her spine, to her womb. Swallowing, she refocused her approach.
“No time for sex,” she whispered.“I didn't know ye were offering.” He chuckled.

Stranded in 1603 Scotland, veterinarian Jenny Morgan is eager to get home to New England. Hiding her ability to read auras, a powerful witch comes to her aid. All Jenny will miss is the man who stole her heart, one dark night.
Laird Gavin Sinclair has a missing brother, a murderous father, and a dark-eyed beauty on his mind. When Jenny returns to a dangerous future, he sets aside his obligations and searches for her at the New England Highland Games. Jealousy and lust ravage his dark soul, until he and Jenny fight evil together.

ReplyDeleteAlmost missed this blog post today...but am so glad I didn't! Glad to see you Nancy, and your new release. I love time travel (ever since Outlander series of books) and historical medieval romances...and to combine the two is pretty powerful. I get so wrapped up in the stories I have to let everything else go...until my hubby yells, "What's for dinner?" :-) jdh2690@gmail.com
ReplyDeleteMy problem, too. After I write or edit I go read another author's book. Vacuuming? Not today. Laundry? later....
