The first book from the Pushing Limits rockstar series is out today. In This One Moment, the lead singer returns to the hometown that he had escaped five years ago. He comes back to see the girl he’s secretly in love with—the girl who was once his best friend.
Here’s an exclusive scene that takes place when Nolan and Hailey were nineteen years old, just before he left for L.A.
Nolan
I watched Hailey sleep, her warm, soft body next to me on the bed. After she had patched up the cut on my forehead with steri-strips, she’d told me stay the night. That was nothing new. We had done that hundreds of times since we were fifteen. In the beginning, it had been innocent. A sleepover between two close friends, nothing more. But that had changed a few months ago, when I started to see Hailey in a new light.
When I realized I didn’t just love Hailey…I was in love with her.
Knowing I wouldn’t fall asleep any time soon, I slipped out from under the covers, careful not to disturb her, and left her room.
The street was quiet, the only light coming from the streetlights. My house loomed in front of me, dark and suffocating. Not wanting to go inside there yet, I walked to the garden shed where I kept my most prized possession: my guitar. I turned on the battery-powered hurricane lantern, removed the guitar from the case, and sat on the garden chair. I strummed a few chords, and the restlessness that had stifled my ability to breathe faded. The chords transformed into the song I’d been working on for the past few weeks.
At the sound of the shed door opening, I sucked in a sharp breath and looked up. The inspiration for my song stood in the doorway, wearing nothing but the thin tank top and sleep shorts that made my dick twitch.
“I figured this is where you went,” she whispered. “What were you playing?”
“A new song I’ve been working on. You wanna hear it?”
She nodded and sat cross-legged on the floor. Her long dark hair glowed in the moonlight.
Pretending to focus on the guitar strings, I sang This One Moment. Every word of the ballad was filled with emotion and the deepest parts of my soul.
The last notes of the song faded and I finally peered up. The smile on Hailey’s face warmed me from the inside out.
“That was amazing, Nolan.”
“Thanks.” I wrote it for you.
“I really think you should be in a band. You’d be amazing at it.”
“You know why I can’t.”
The smile on her face fell away. “But you’re too talented to not try. It’s like this is what you’re supposed to be doing with your life.”
“I know, but try telling that to my father.”
Hailey didn’t say anything for the longest time. She just sat and listened to me play. Which is why I started when she said, “When are you going to tell me the truth about what happened tonight?”

The answer to Hailey’s question is found in This One Moment.

ReplyDeleteMai, That's a hard one. I've lived in a few countries (England, Finland, Canada, US). I would love to visit Norway. Not sure if I'd want to live there. I love living in Canada...but we don't get all the cool stuff that you can get in the US. :)
DeleteCool new author for me.
ReplyDeleteI really enjoy the caring that Nolan has for Hailey to drop everything to be at her hospital bed. Good excerpt that really shows their deep friendship.
