Guest Post with Author M. L. Buchman and Giveaway

Meet M. L. Buchman, author of Pure Heat.

M. L. Buchman has over a dozen romances and more than 20 books in print (he also writes science fiction and fantasy). His full name, Matthew Lieber Buchman, translates as Matthew Beloved Book Man, no wonder he’s a writer. It didn’t jump him until he’d tried a “few” other careers. He has worked decades (yes, really) as a corporate project manager in 7 different industries. In among that, he has: rebuilt and single-handed a fifty-foot sailboat, both flown and jumped out of airplanes, designed and built two houses, and bicycled solo around the world. He is now making his living full-time as a writer, scribbling away with his wife on the Oregon Coast.

BIRTH OF A FIREHAWK
with M.L. Buchman

How is a new series born? Well one day I was sitting around and said, “Hey, I should start a new series.”

Actually, not to be facetious (okay, not to be too facetious) that’s about how it happens. There I am, M.L. Writer be-bopping along with my “Night Stalkers” series and I’ve written four novels and three short novels. I have love and happiness and marriage just spilling all over the place like it’s going out of style. But something is missing…

I guess one thing you need to know about me for the rest of this to make sense: I am NOT a “proud parent.” I don’t have a bumper sticker on my car going, “Nyah! Nyah! Nyah!” Nope, I’m much worse than that. I’m one of THOSE parents. You know, the ones that once you start them off simply won’t shut up about their kid. I’m faster with the wallet photos than even my wife (don’t tell her, but I practice at night in front of the mirror—Quickdraw McPicture). Other than my wife, my kid is the best thing that has ever happened to me.

So given my, uh, bias, how could I have all of these seven Night Stalker love stories and no kids? It had stretched right past the bounds in credulity and tipped over into the ridiculous. The next step in the puzzle was what happens when a military woman becomes pregnant? One thing I can empathize with as a parent is that your priorities totally flip. I would do anything to protect my kid. Anything.

The last piece was, who would face this challenge? There’s a saying in writing about abusing your characters, “Heap trouble on their heads.” So I heaped. I took my most significant on-going character, Emily Beale, who has been the backbone of the Night Stalkers since book #1 The Night is Mine. At the end of the seventh book, Take Over at Midnight, I gave her the life-changing gift of new life.

One more element was needed. A woman as powerful as Major Emily Beale does not stop easily. She may no longer be able to face the dangers of military combat, but neither is she going to give up a life’s passion of flying helicopters. She and her husband Mark will form a new team, and help guide young hearts in their new series as they did through six books of the Night Stalkers (book #1 being their own journey).

I was fortunate enough to have the real-world intervene at this point. There is a local company that until recently was one of the major helicopter firefighting outfits in the country (they just sold off that group). Another division of theirs had bought the old Air America assets from CIA operations in Laos and Cambodia and was rumored to still fly CIA transport missions.

Thus I created Mount Hood Aviation. They fly to wildfire. They fight the roaring flames that sweep across forests and communities with their helicopters. And when really necessary, they take care of problems that even the military can’t step in on. At least not until it gets out of hand.

And fear not! While Mark and Emily keep the Firehawks’ hearts pounding, the Night Stalkers still continue on their own adventures risking both their lives and their hearts in defense of our country.

These daredevil smokejumpers fight more than fires.

The elite fire experts of Mount Hood Aviation fly into places even the CIA can't penetrate.

She lives to fight fires...

Carly Thomas could read burn patterns before she knew the alphabet. A third-generation forest fire specialist who lost both her father and her fiancé to the flames, she's learned to live life like she fights fires: with emotions shut down.

But he's lit an inferno she can't quench...

Former smokejumper Steve "Merks" Mercer can no longer fight fires up close and personal, but he can still use his intimate knowledge of wildland burns as a spotter and drone specialist. Assigned to copilot a Firehawk with Carly, they take to the skies to battle the worst wildfire in decades and discover a terrorist threat hidden deep in the Oregon wilderness—but it's the heat between them that really sizzles.

  3. Thanks Lily! What I don't understand is why there aren't more guys writing romance. I mean, I get to spend my day thinking about love and sex and intimacy and... I just don't understand! It's so much fun!

  8. I haven't read any of this author's books before, but I love the premise. My hubby used to fight forest fires on the ground in Washington state. Not as a firejumper, though he wanted to do it.

  9. Hi Marcy, I haven't fought fire in the air or on the ground, so I can only hope that I did enough research to get it right (I did a bunch). The book (and the series -there are more of them) are mainly focused on the helicopter pilots (called helitack), but the hero of this book is a smokejumper taken off the line by an injury and trying to find a way to fight back to fire. Through the series, I spend time with smokies, hotshots, helitack, and others. I found the world, and what these men and women do, both fascinating and exciting. I hope I captured that.
