ARC Review: One Pink Rose by Julie Garwood

Books like “One Pink Rose” are the reason I fell in love with romance novels years ago. This is a classic Julie Garwood love story. Julie Garwood was one of my all-time favorite writers and I stayed up many nights during my summers reading her and loving her heroes and heroines. This book was written in 1997 so I can see how romance novels have changed and evolved but let me tell you “One Pink Rose” is proof that classics are still better! “One Pink Rose” is part of the Claybourne’s series. The Claybourne’s are a family in Montana. They are typical rough and tumble type of heroes. They have very good old-fashion values and love their family. This is about the youngest Claybourne, Travis.

Travis is a great hero. He is looking for a man that he believes swindled his mom. Travis adores his family and mom and is determined to find the man he believes stole from her. His mother asks him to do a favor, she wants him to accompany Emily Finnegan to Golden Crest Montana so she can marry the man she has been corresponding with. Travis and Emily instantly react to each other. Travis thinks that Emily is crazy and Emily doesn’t care what Travis thinks. After nursing a broken heart, she is determined to take her destiny into her own hands and marry.

Travis can’t believe that Emily would set out to marry a man she has only shared letters with. He can’t believe that he promised to accompany her after three previous couples couldn’t complete the task and most importantly, he can’t believe that he wants Emily from himself. But Travis is not the marrying type and he refuses to give his heart away.

I absolutely loved this story. It was funny, sweet, romantic, and full of unexpected fights, flying frying pans and some very dangerous men. This is classic Garwood-which I love. Travis and Emily were so cute and funny together. I started reading and when I looked up I was half way through the story. I couldn’t put it down, the writing was engaging and the story moved along so smoothly. This is a very chaste story, no sweaty hot and heavy action but it was still very sweet and I really enjoyed it. I wish there were more stories like these!

Needless to say, this was a fun read. I really enjoyed it and was reminded about why I fell in love with romance novels.

ARC Review:The Last Time We Were Us by Leah Konen

The Last Time We Were Us is my first book by Leah Konen. I have to admit that I was drawn in with the gorgeous cover, and the blurb. I am such a sucker for friends to lovers stories, and this one sounded like one I just couldn't pass up. Unfortunately this wasn't all what I had been expecting or hoping for. 

Liz Grant is ready for the summer of a lifetime with her friend MacKenzie, hoping to make the popular Innis Taylor her boyfriend. But when her childhood best friend Jason Sullivan is released from juvie, Liz finds herself unable to stay away from him even though everyone tells her she should. Their friendship rekindled, Liz and Jason find themselves feeling more for each other than they ever have before. Liz always believed that Jason wasn't capable of what they said he did that sent him to juvie, but when the truth finally comes out how many more people will be hurt? 

I didn't like Liz from the start, and that made it really hard to connect at all with this story. Liz was a whiny immature brat, and seemed to be all about herself. She was so judgmental and she just didn't care about anyone but herself and it was hard to care about someone that doesn't care about their actions and how they affect others. The romance here felt like it was never fully developed. Liz is all about Innis until she lands him, and then all of a sudden she wants Jason. It just felt so childish and immature. The forbidden aspect seemed to be forced, and was more based on the public perception of Jason rather than anything between him and Liz actually being forbidden. It just didn't really work for me. 

I also really didn't like the ending. Without spoiling anything, the ending felt so forced to me and was unrealistic. I understood what the author was trying to do to get people to forgive Jason and make them supportive of a relationship between him and Liz, but the incident just seemed completely out of character and thrown in just for the sake of drama. It didn't feel genuine at all, and I really think that it was just done to get everyone on Liz and Jason's side. I finished this book hoping for something to happen, and it did. It just wasn't what I had been hoping for, and unfortunately this book just felt like it could have been so much shorter with the same end result. It felt redundant and repetitive, and I honestly didn't feel invested at all. While this book didn't work for me, that isn't to say it won't work for you. It could just be me and my own issues, but I think that if you are looking for a YA novel about friends falling in love there are better choices out there that don't feel forced or have characters that are as unlikable as the ones here.

ARC Review: Last Mile by Katie Ashley

This is the third book in the Vicious Cycle series. I've read all three books but they are stand alone books. You can start right here in the series if you want to. I'm an MC romance fan so I'm naturally inclined to appreciate these types of stories but I think even if you're just a regular contemporary romance fan, you'll enjoy this one.

The MC in this book is the Raiders and if you read any of the past novels, you know that the Raiders have been trying to go legit and only engage in business that is legal. That fact, however, is not readily apparent to law enforcement officials who are still trying to infiltrate the club and uncover illegal conduct. To that end, Samantha and her partner Gavin are assigned to go undercover with the Raiders. Gavin poses as a potential club member and Samantha as his 'ol lady.' Bishop is an officer of the club and is instantly attracted to Samantha despite the fact that she is supposed to belong to his friend. Samantha is instantly attracted to Bishop despite the fact that she's supposed to be trying to er...arrest him and his club brothers.

Samantha figures out pretty quickly that the Raiders have gone straight. She also figures out that what ever is between her and Bishop is not going to just go away. Little by little Samantha becomes less of her undercover persona and more of herself- a person falling in love with a man. I think you will like Bishop. He was really different than my impression of him from other books in the series. Bishop was much more stable and consistent than you ever might have imagined from reading about him in past books. I think you will also enjoy Samantha's transition. Samantha has a negative impression of MCs from the beginning of the book because of the murder of her father. I enjoyed watching Bishop and the Raiders show her the human side of MCs and change her mind about something she thought was an absolute fact.

You know from the beginning of the book that at some point things are going to fall apart. Samantha is pretty much lying to Bishop from the first time he lays eyes on her. I loved that when things did fall apart Samantha knew were her loyalties were and fought like crazy for her man. I wasn't entirely convinced that Bishop's failure to figure out what Samantha was up to was logical but I could forgive the inconsistencies. This book was fast paced, sexy, romantic and fun. Katie Ashley has become one of the most reliable quality authors in this genre. Whether you've read all the books in this series or this is your first one, I think this is one you will really enjoy.
