Guest Post with Author Kristin Miller and Giveaway

Today I am happy to welcome back to the blog author Kristin Miller. Kristin is currently on tour celebrating the recent release of Forbidden By Fate and has stopped by to answer some questions. Before I get to the interview, lets get to know a bit about Kristin.

Kristin Miller has had a passion for language and literature her whole life. Born and raised in Small Town USA, she often made up stories about faraway places and edge-of-your-seat adventures.

After graduating from Humboldt State University with a degree in psychology, Kristin realized there is no scarier place than the warped human psyche. Wanting to combine her love of writing with her desire to paint twisted villains, Kristin wound up in the unlikeliest of places—the classroom. She taught high school and middle school English before giving in to the desire to create her own world, where villains can be sympathetic and heroes can be devilishly good.

She is represented by Nalini Akolekar of Spencerhill Associates Ltd. and writes dark paranormal romances and toe curling romantic suspense.

First off, can you tell us a bit about you?
Sure! I write the dark and sexy Vampires of Crimson Bay series for HarperCollins/Avon, fantasy/paranormal romances on the Isle of Feralon for Harlequin. When I’m not plotting a way to kill my fictional darlings, I’m busy raising two children in Northern California with my devilishly sexy Alpha-male husband.

Did you always want to be a writer?
No, though I kind of wish I had. It’d make for a great story, wouldn’t it? My dream job was a high school English teacher. I wanted to teach Shakespeare and creative writing and characterization activities. I’ve always loved writing and editing a good essay and I knew that that passion was not something everyone shared…why not run with it? It wasn’t until I took a few years off to raise my kids that I realized I could transfer my love of language from essays to stories.

What kind of writer are you? Pantser or Plotter?
My process has evolved through the years. I started off as more of a pantser, flying by the seat of my pants as the story came to me, word by word. However, as I started learning the writing process and trying to hone the craft, I became more of a plotter. Now, when starting a new story, I develop the characters, their inner conflicts, the world they live in, the overarching conflict, climax and major turning points, all before I put one word on the page.

Where do your ideas come from?
Ah, hell if I know. Kidding, kidding. Stories come from everywhere. Just today, when I was picking up my daughter from church, I saw a poster of a lake at twilight. In the center was a woman in a kayak with a sea plane docked beside her. I immediately wondered who that woman could be. Was that her plane? Her lover’s? Was she waiting for someone? Just passing through? I stopped and stared at the poster for a bit…before my daughter tugged on my arm, reminding me it was time to go. Inspiration is in music, paintings, movies, TV shows, even posters in church hallways.

A la Twitter style, can you describe your book (or series) in 140 characters or less.
A dragon hero has one night to show his werewolf lover that the passion they share is worth turning away from her family.

What are some of your favorite kinds of stories to read?
I love anything dark: John Saul, Dean Koontz, Stacia Kane, J.R. Ward, to name a few. I like to get lost in the world I’m reading.

Do you have a favorite book and if so what is it?
Rebecca by Daphne duMaurier

What are the scenes that are the hardest for you to write?
I think if a scene is really difficult to write there’s something wrong with the scene that needs to be reworked. Steamy and action packed scenes usually write the fastest. I can write a clean chapter a day of those. (About 10-15 pages.) It always takes me a few tries to write the first 30 pages or so…so I’ll go with that. Beginnings must be the hardest for me.

If you could have dinner with any three authors, who would you choose and why?
Ooh, good question. Dead or alive? Let’s see…Daphne duMaurier (she’s my favorite!), Nora Roberts and Stephen King. That should make for a lovely dinner, don’t you think?

Last question, are you working on anything right now?
Last Vamp Standing, book #3 in the Vampires of Crimson Bay series, releases August 28th. I’m also working on another proposal for Book #3 in the Isle of Feralon series, though I’m not certain which races that will entail yet. I’m thinking a Draco hero and Sindraco heroine (woman with dragon blood who doesn’t have the ability to shift) would be fun to write, so we’ll see.

A forbidden love……

A second chance……

A night of passion neither will forget.

Sasha, a love-thirsty werewolf and rightful heir to the Were throne, is ready to take control over her pack. But when her first love, dragon shifter Damon Frost, lands on her doorstep, demanding their races negotiate ownership over Feralon’’s hot springs, he makes her question more than the fight for the enchanted neutral ground. No matter the emotions bubbling inside her, Sasha can’’t become involved with Damon. Not now. Not ever again.

Forbidden to step foot onto Were land after a romp with the Alpha’’s daughter as a teenager, Damon has bided his time, waiting for the day when he’’d be accepted back onto Were land. Using the hot spring negotiation as a way to get closer to Sasha, Damon plans to use every minute alone to remind her of the passion they shared–—a passion they could ignite again.

One night of ecstasy stands between them and the fight for the springs. One night of revealing glances, skin searing chemistry, and erotic desires they’’d long buried.

Will one taste of forbidden love be enough to satiate their desires? Or will the need to explore the depths of their love unleash a Were-Draco war?

  1. Congrats on the release of Forbidden by Fate. I love anything to do with dragons & am happily adding this book to my wishlist. When I read that steamy scenes are easy to write I figured that it must be thanks to your devilishly sexy Alpha-male husband!

    2. Claimed by Desire is the first book featuring a dragon and a woman with no shape-shifting blood. Forbidden by Fate is the second, with a dragon hero and werewolf heroine. I'm working on book three and four now. I can tell you tentatively that book three will have a dragon hero and Sindraco heroine. (On the Isle of Feralon, some dragon offspring are born without the ability to shift--those are Sindracos.) I think the fourth book will feature a werewolf hero and mermaid heroine. Things can still change at this point, but that's what's on my mind. I can't see past the next two, but if readers continue to enjoy them, I'll keep writing 'em!

  11. I love Dean Koontz too. That would be a very scary dinner with those three authors at one time. Very Interesting dinner. Not sure I could be around Mr King, he is a little too scary for me!
