Guest Post with Author Kelley Vitollo and Giveaway

Today I would like to welcome author Kelley Vitollo to RFTC. Kelley is celebrating the release of her book Lucky Break and has stopped by for a little chat. Please give Kelley a warm welcome.

Kelley has been writing for as long as she can remember. She won her first writing contest in third grade for an essay she wrote on, “Tomorrows Leaders on the Move”. Unfortunately, like dreams sometimes do, they got pushed aside for a while. She married, worked full time, and started her family. In 2004 Kelley, her husband and their new baby girl made a move to Southern California and that’s when everything changed. As a stay-at-home mom for the first time, her passion for writing flared to life again.

With two incredible daughters, an awesome husband and her days spent writing genres she loves, Kelley considers herself the luckiest girl in the world. She still resides in sunny Southern California, where she loves spending time with her family and sneaking away to the bookstore with her laptop.

Kelley also writes YA under the name Nyrae Dawn.

Shh… Don’t Tell my Hubby

People often ask if my characters remind me of people I know. I usually don’t set out to do this, but I think it’s automatic that people you know bleed into your characters. They’re a part of your life and your book becomes so close to you as well, so I think it’s a natural progression.

It was a little different than that with LUCKY BREAK.

It wasn’t something I started from the beginning, but as I wrote Kade, he started to remind me about my husband. Not most of the big things, but some of the small details. Most of them, no one but myself would connect the dots.

There are a few things that I plucked right out of real life and they were all silly, little things my husband has done that fit so well with Kade I had to use them.

There’s a scene where Sidney tells funny stories from Kade’s past and…well let’s just say they aren’t just stories. Stepping into the pool while at work?

It really happened.

Climbing the pole?

Yep, that one as well.

But you know what other things about Kade remind me of my love? His loyalty…his big heart. Oh and if you ask me, my hubby looks pretty good without his shirt on, too ;).
Have you ever read a character in a book and really connected them to someone in your life?

One lucky break is all struggling actress Sidney Williams needs. But when living the LA life becomes too much, she heads back to the small town of Shamrock Falls for the vacation she needs to get her life on track—and immediately runs into Kade Mitchell, her former best friend and the boy next door she’s always regretted leaving behind.

Kade, the new owner of Lucky’s—once the most popular bar in Shamrock Falls—is determined to bring the place back to its former glory, and seeing Sidney again is a distraction he doesn’t need. Sure, the chemistry between them is explosive, but Kade can’t let himself fall into a fling with his best friend—not when he knows she’s soon heading back to the glitter of Tinseltown.

Now, with the possibility of her first major acting role looming, Sidney must decide if her lucky break is in Hollywood or right where she left it—in Shamrock Falls.

  1. Hi Kelley!
I've read quite a few books that I've been able to connect with someone in my life. I have 7 siblings so that's 7 different personalities and most of the time there is someone in a story that reminds me of one of them:)

  3. I've never connected any characters to someone in my life. I guess I just don't think that way.

  10. Congrats on the release! My epic TBR queue grows yet again... I'm never going to get caught up! :)

When I'm reading contemporaries (my other genre of choice is romantic suspense/romantic thrillers, which is quite far removed from my real life, haha), I definitely see aspects of myself and my friends in some characters. I think those connections help make the book more enjoyable!
