Guest Post with Author Lindsey Piper and Giveaway

Welcome back to RFTC author Lindsey Piper. Lindsey has stopped by to chat about her newest book, Blood Warrior. Please give her a warm welcome.

Lindsey Piper is the alter ego of an award-winning historical and contemporary romance author. Her hotly anticipated DRAGON KINGS series is her first foray into paranormal fiction. She lives and writes in Chicago.

Places to find Lindsey:

The Road Movie

I love closed room dramas like Agatha Christie’s Ten Little Indians and the film Twelve Angry Men. Stick two or more human in a room, lock the door, and see what happens! Unfortunately for me, my favorite trope would be quickly discovered after the second or third book I wrote along those lines.

My next favorite trope in the road movie. The concepts are similar in the means of storytelling, if not in how they comes across to readers. For example, in BLOOD WARRIOR, the hero and heroine—Tallis and Kavya—are on the run from her psychotic brother. Hit the road! That means a lot of action and close scrapes, which are seriously fun to write.

But it also means...lots of scenarios when Tallis and Kavya are stuck together in awkward, close-quarters, precarious, dangerous, secluded situations where depending on each other is as intense as being in a locked room. Ha! Now you know my secret.

The extra though, really, is the change of scenery. I started out wanting to do a road movie romance because of the intensity of interaction it would force on the characters. What I got was an adventure that roams from the foothills of the Himalayas to the busy streets of New Delhi to the Scottish Highlands.

That meant snowy, craggy rocks and fresh streams, then hugely crowded, colorful streets, then the ripe greenery of Scotland in all its ancient glory.

Fun!

I looked at a lot of pictures ;)

The other cool side effect, so to speak, of a road romance is when the hero and heroine start to see aspects of their mate against the backdrop of their homeland. Tallis is a product of the Highlands. Sure, he’s spent twenty years out in the world, blending in and avoiding detection. That means when Kavya sees him for the first time in his element—in his family’s ancestral castle and surrounded by his kin—she gets to finally understand all of the facets of his characters and his background.

Here’s a small example:

So that was the color of his eyes.

Kavya knew it was an absurd realization, just as she knew she should be frozen through and through as Tallis had warned. Yet the fire in her belly kept her warm, and the sight of the North Sea crashing onto the craggy rocks of the northern Scottish coast filled her with peace. Maybe she would never know the deep secrets buried in his soul. Now, however, she knew that his eyes matched the waters of this sacred place. She’d been right. They were the color of an ocean she’d never seen. Frothy, white-topped waves reminded her of the silver flecks adorning each strand of his wind-tossed hair.

So when I can’t write a closed room romance, I’ll send my couple on the road. Makes me wonder what I’ll do for book three, HUNTED WARRIOR, due out in summer 2014.........

As a young man, sarcastic, violent Tallis Pendray believed the Dragon Kings’ survival depended on a prophecy delivered in dreams by a woman named “the Sun.” His role has been to complete inexplicable, even reprehensible tasks. First, by murdering a priest, he united his fragmented clan in their hatred of him. Dubbed “the Heretic,” Tallis fled his family’s Highland estate. Now disillusioned, he seeks revenge on the woman he holds responsible for two decades of exile.

Telepath Kavya Indranan is a charismatic, seductive cult leader born to a prominent family. However, she grew up terrorized by the ominous threat of her powerful, insane twin brother. On the run and hiding among the poor, she witnessed the destruction wrought by her clan’s centuries-old civil war. Maturity nurtures Kavya’s determination to end the cycle of bloodshed. Those who follow her call for peace have nicknamed her “the Sun.”

Bent on revenge, and without knowledge of Kavya’s noble intentions, Tallis kidnaps her on the eve of her groundbreaking announcement. The two watch in horror as her twin brutally smashes the tentative truce…and hunts the sister whose death would make him invincible.

Kavya is the Sun–revered, untouched, and bound by a lonely destiny that promises a deadly showdown against the last of her family. Tallis is the Heretic–despised and exiled because of actions that seem random, heartless, and contrary to the safety of the clans he protects. She’s not a goddess, and he’s not a natural born killer. A desperate trek from the Himalayan foothills to the Scottish Highlands reveals two secluded souls hidden by bloody reputations. Will their trust be strong enough to avert an all-out war that could destroy them, and their kind, forever?

  4. I've never really thought about it but usually road movie romances are filled with great descriptions of the landscape, the different places they are seeing and lots of action. Something always seems to go wrong with the vehicle which makes it even more interesting.
