ARC Review: Exiled by Jasinda Wilder

I just have to start out by telling you that this is the third part in The Madame X Series. You can not start reading the series at part 3, these books are not standalones. So if you want to be a part of the wonderful experience that is the Madame X Series, you need to start at book one and come back to this review when you are ready for book 3. The prior books as well as this review will contain spoilers of the preceding books in the series.

Okay now that that warning is out of the way let's get down to business. This has been a truly compelling and intriguing series . Exiled is the final installment and provides the answers to the questions about Isabel's identity that have followed the series. Exiled also brings an end to the love / hate triangle between Isabel, Logan and Caleb. By way of background, I gave the first two installments in this series five stars each and they were five well-deserved Stars. As much as it pains me to do it, to really be honest about where this book falls on the rating scale, I had to give it a solid three stars. I think it is necessary to dissect my rating a little bit just so that you have a clear picture of what it means.

First, in terms of the writing and the language of this book, this is definitely Wilder at her best as usual. The language is Rich and nuanced and the author paints a picture that you can engage in at every scene in the book. If this review were just about the technical and structural aspects of the writing, it would be a total 5 star review. The reason this book wound up in my good but not great category is because of the progress of the actual story.
I think that because the first two books present so many issues that have to be resolved in terms of Isabelle's background, a lot of this book is spent explaining Isabel and her past. This is done through conversations between Isabel and Caleb, Isabel and Logan and it is also accomplished through a series of flashbacks. The thing that can be a little difficult for the readers who are expecting the explosive romance and sex that we found in the first two books is that this is more the story of Isabel's life including how she came to live in New York, her parents and finally we learn how Isabel and Kaleb met. As much as we need the biographical information, I have to admit that there were parts of the book that just weren't as compelling as what I came to expect from the series. Some of the book felt like the coming-of-age story of Isabelle.

The other thing about this book that is a little bit different from the other books in the series is that a sort of triangle emerges. I know it's been there in other books but it was a little more complicated in this one in terms of Isabelle's feelings. That's all I can tell you without spoiling anything but it was one of the things that I wasn't necessarily crazy about. And the reason I wasn't crazy about it is because all the things that we know Caleb did to Logan. In the first two books the readers are kind of torn about their feelings for Caleb, we are trying to decide is he a good guy or a bad guy. When book two closes, however, we are fairly certain that Caleb is a bad guy. It was hard sometimes to read Isabel's positive feelings for someone who destroyed Logan's life in many ways. I guess how you ultimately feel about that issue depends on whether you are team Caleb or team Logan.

The last thing about this book that I REALLY did not enjoy was the twist on the unexpected thing that happens. I refuse to spoil anything but there is an issue that arises and we have to wait most of the book to get an answer. When we get the answer it is just so far fetched, I was really unhappy about the answer we got. That's all I can tell you.

Obviously, you have to read this book if you've read the series. Be warned, you might not love Isabel at the end and you might not be as entertained by this book as the others in the series.

ARC Review: Exposed by Jasinda Wilder

Jasinda Wilder is on another level as a writer. The intricacy of her storytelling is brilliant. Her characters are complex and the way she relates them evokes strong emotions from the readers. This is just some really good writing! That being said, this is Part 2 in the Madame X series, if you have not read part I, exit the train now. Part 2 will spoil Part 1 and this review will too. If you’re just starting here, go back and get Part 1 and come back and read this review when you’re ready for Part 2.

This book picks up right where the last one left off. X is still essentially trapped with Caleb. She has the freedom to move around, she doesn’t seem to be seeing her clients anymore and she stays in Caleb’s condo. Besides those things, her life hasn’t really changed. So a weird thing happened at the end of the last book that might have happened to you too. I wasn’t sure how I felt about Caleb. I couldn’t figure out if he loved X or if he was just a controlling jerk. I also couldn’t figure out what Caleb’s motivations were so I got all angsty about the Caleb situation. I think I finally joined Team Logan 100% when we found out that Caleb was bang-training a harem of women who he was then selling as wives. Yeah, no. That’s not going to work for my romantic ideals.

Logan, in this book represents light and hope. The really fascinating thing is how terrified X is to reach for those two things. There are points in the book where you have to wonder if X is going to be able to break away from Caleb. For X, Caleb represents the known. It may not be much considering she has amnesia but when you don’t know anything about your life, it’s hard to let go of what you do know.

As things develop between Logan and X, the romance side of the story gets really good. It’s all a little twisted because Caleb is in the background. The other thing happening is that we are all trying to untangle the mystery of who X is and how she came to be associated with Caleb in the first place. Jasinda starts dropping more and more hints but I have to warn you, it’s not resolved by the end of the book. I do think I’ve figured out how X and Caleb got together but I can’t wait to find out if I’m right. Don’t even ask me, I am not going to spoil it for you, we all just have to keep guessing.

The mystery suspense aspect of the book is really good. This book is intriguing from the first page down to the very last sentence. If you want to read this, either do it on the weekend when you can get through all of it, or take a personal day off work. You don’t want to be that guy trying to read under your desk and this is that kind of book. You just will not want to put it down. Bravo to Jasinda for continuing this series just as well as it begun. I can’t wait to see what’s next.

ARC Review: Madame X by Jasinda Wilder

When I started reading Madame X, I didn't know what to think. In the first couple of pages I was thinking, 'what in the entire hell is this book about?' I actually put this book down for weeks before I picked it back up and tried again and boy am i glad I did.

I can't give you a synopsis of the plot like I usually do in reviews because this is the sort of book that nothing is exactly what you expect and telling you anything might spoil everything. So I have to kind of give you snapshots of what is really really awesome about this book. First, the question of WHO Madame X really is travels through the story with the characters and will keep you questioning and second guessing until the last page. Then there is the question of just WHO Caleb is and not just who he is but what is he? The Hero or the Villain or maybe even both.

Jasinda Wilder is one of the most adept authors at building characters that I have ever read. This is not my first book by her and I had forgotten just how good she is at what she does. The characters in this book draw you in, they are complex and full of depth. There is honesty in the interactions of the characters even though they are all surrounded by lies. The book is an exploration in raw want and desire and how that transforms people.

Throughout the book Jasinda weaves the theme of identity. It's not just about who are Madame X and Caleb, there is George, Jonathan, Logan and even Thomas. Every character that enters this story requires another look.

Once I got past my initial impatience, this book was thoroughly compelling. This is one of the books that you cannot and do not just put down, you have to know what happens next. I love this book because Jasinda doesn't take the easy way out in the story. Things are not neat and tidy when the book ends and they shouldn't be because after we know what we know about these characters, that would be disingenuous. I HATE that this is the first book in a series. I'm not the girl who hates serials, but in this case I'm dying to know what happens next and I'm irritated beyond reason that I have to wait to find out. Read this book, thank me later!
