ARC Review: Hallowed Ground by Rebecca Yarros
I was so excited yet a bit scared when I found out that Rebecca Yarros had written another book in the Flight & Glory series about Josh and Ember! They are hands down my favorite couple from this series, so while I wanted more from them I was also worried about where their story could go from where we had left them. Unfortunately, Hallowed Ground was really hard for me because while I loved Ember and Josh, I really began to dislike both of them here. While the previous three books can all be read as standalones, I would recommend reading this one only after you have read the others or at least Full Measures. I almost wish that I hadn't read this book though, as it soured me a bit on one of my favorite couples.
After everything that Josh Walker and December Howard have been through, they are about to start their lives together. Engaged and happy, they are moving in together and embracing their future together. As Ember heads toward graduation she has a huge opportunity to work on a dig, only the location is in Turkey. Josh is now a helicopter pilot, and although the last thing Ember wanted after losing her dad was to continue the Army lifestyle, she knew she would stand by Josh no matter what. But when one incident changes everything, Ember and Josh must fight for their relationship more than ever before and they begin to realize that sometimes love isn't enough to overcome some obstacles.
I have loved Josh and Ember from the very first book in this series. They have been my favorites and they were always the ones I felt were the strongest when it came to connections and chemistry. But this book changed that for me, and I felt like the disconnect between them was huge here. They weren't the same couple I remembered, and while I expected some of that I didn't expect for it to feel like there was such a massive divide between them as there was here. Josh wasn't the same loving and supportive guy that helped Ember heal after losing her father. He was selfish and reckless, and had no problems leaving Ember. He was clearly going through a lot, but he let everyone in but Ember. I didn't like that she was made to compromise everything, and when she would ask for one thing he would do the opposite. I lost so much respect for him. Then we have Ember who had come back from so much, and was a strong heroine that embraced a life with Josh she hadn't wanted because of her love for him. But here she was made to be weak, and as though she was a doormat for him to walk all over. Yes she did a few things for herself, but only because she was left with no choice. She would do whatever Josh wanted or go in whichever direction he pushed her in and I ended up losing respect for her as well. She gave so much, and honestly she wasn't getting much if anything in return.
Overall, I was so disappointed here. While I still loved these two together and liked them, I didn't have the same respect and admiration for them. So much changed here, and I really just felt like these characters were a shell of their former selves. They should have been maturing with age and growing into their relationship as they headed to the altar, and yet they seemed to have lost all their magic here. Even towards the end with the epilogue and how things ended, it just didn't feel as satisfying as it should have. I felt like this whole book just tainted their relationship and I didn't like how they had been in this book at all. While I understand that things happen and change a relationship in unexpected ways, it was the way they each dealt with those things and how they treated one another that bothered me here. They could have come back from anything and it was clear they still loved one another despite it all, but I wish I would have just remembered them as they were rather than seeing how they were here.

Guest Post with Author Rebecca Yarros and Giveaway
Meet Rebecca Yarros author of Beyond What is Given.
When she's not writing, she's tying on hockey skates for her kids, or sneaking in some guitar time. She is madly in love with her army-aviator husband of eleven years, and they're currently stationed in Upstate NY with their gaggle of rambunctious kiddos and snoring English Bulldog, but she would always rather be home in Colorado.
ARC Review: Beyond What Is Given by Rebecca Yarros
Beyond What Is Given is the third standalone story in the Flight & Glory Series from Rebecca Yarros. Though the characters are interconnected, you can read these out of order with no problems though there will be some spoilers from the previous books if you choose to do that. I really love this series, and I couldn't wait to read more from Rebecca Yarros. That being said, this wasn't my favorite of the series.
Grayson Masters is focused on graduating flight school and getting the assignment he needs. He doesn't need any distractions, and has kept himself closed off from anyone but his family for a reason. But when Samantha Fitzgerald moves in with him and his roommates, the instant connection between them threatens everything. Sam wasn't looking for anything either, having just left her own horrible situation behind. But the more they try to stay away from each other, the quicker they realize that it is impossible. Soon they are falling for one another, and neither of them knows what to do about it.
I really liked Sam and Grayson at the beginning of this book. I loved the chemistry that was so apparent right from the start. They were attracted to one another, and though they got off on the wrong foot I really enjoyed seeing them interact with one another. As they began to feel more for one another I really thought that I was going to love their story. But then all their secrets started getting in the way of things, and unfortunately that was what really started to lose me. I understood some of where Gray was coming from and why he was so stuck on doing things according to the plan. But I also really hated how dead set he was on sticking to those, even knowing everything that he was doing to Sam because of them. He was hurting her by focusing so much on his past and a future that he was basically guilted into keeping, and I really wanted him to fight for Sam. I felt like he didn't really seem to do that until the very end, and it was frustrating. Same with Sam. She was beyond patient and accepting of the situation, but when given the chance for them to take a stand she chose to back off. I wanted her to claim Grayson and face everything together, but she seemed to just give in. It made it hard to really connect with these two, given that they seemed to just give up so easily.
The Grace situation got old here for me, and quite frankly I lost a lot of interest because of it. It seemed to take over the story and was more about her than it was about Grayson and Sam. I absolutely hated Parker and Grayson's dad, and I hated the fact that Grayson continued to allow them to have such a strong impact on his life. He might have had words with them at times, but he never really seemed to do much about it, and I hated that he allowed them to get away with so much. While I admired Grayson's loyalty to them and Grace, I wanted to see that same loyalty to Sam. The fact that he knew what they had was everything and more than anything he had felt before yet he still didn't stop all the crap really just made me angry and caused me to lose a lot of respect for Grayson. The pacing here was also very slow and made this book feel far too long. I was getting bored and waiting for something to happen, yet we just kept going around in circles as the situation continued to go unresolved. Though I did like the epilogue and ending of this story, I really felt like there was just too much that had already happened to move past and be fully satisfied with the story. I liked Grayson and Sam together, but I hated the way things went for them and how much it took for Grayson to finally come around. I will read more from Rebecca Yarros in the future as I have really enjoyed the previous books in the series. This one was just frustrating and not what I had been expecting or hoping for.

ARC Review: Eyes Turned Skyward by Rebecca Yarros
Another fantastic read from Rebecca Yarros. After reading Full Measures, I couldn't wait to get my hands on Eyes Turned Skyward. I just wanted more of these characters and the world that Rebecca Yarros created. As soon as Jagger appeared in the last book, I just knew that I wanted more of him and wanted to read his story. This book was so good and Jagger's story was everything I was wanting and more.
In Full Measures when we meet Jagger, we meet a sexy, cocky playboy that is all about a good time. Don't get me wrong, he's still all about the good time in this book but he's no longer the playboy that we met in the last book. Now he's got his eyes on being number one in his class in flight school and wants no distractions...that is until he meets Paisley.
Diagnosed with a with the same heart condition that killed her sister, Paisley just wants to live her life and cross as many things off on her bucket list that she can while she can. When a chance encounter with Jagger ends up saving her life, Paisley and Jagger spark up an unlikely friendship that eventually leads to more.
One thing that I loved about this book is that Paisley and Jagger don't immediately jump into a relationship. They start out as friends. Yes, part of the reason for that is because Paisley has a boyfriend when they meet but because they are friends first they were really able to get to know one another. I found myself on edge waiting to see when and how they two would finally get together and when they did, it was spectacular. There was just so much chemistry between them both and their sparks were evident to everyone around them.
What I loved most is how Jagger is with Paisley. He's kind, sweet and just so damn cute with her. He really "sees" Paisley and gets what she's about and what she likes. Yes, he wants to be with her but he is more than happy to be her friend if that is all that she is willing to give him. He was patient and just so damn adorable. I can honestly say that Jagger blew my mind. He turned out to be nothing like I was expecting.
This book was intense, emotional and just an all-around great read. I found it difficult to put down and read it in pretty much one sitting. From the first page to the last, I found myself rooting for these two but not only with their relationship but with everything going on in their personal lives. They both have so much that they have to deal with and I feel like the way the author handled things rang true to the characters and the story.
Eyes Turned Skyward was a fantastic read and I HIGHLY recommend. I definitely can't wait to read more from Rebecca Yarros.

ARC Review: Full Measures by Rebecca Yarros
Wow this book was really good. It was such an emotional read, and I will admit that this one had me sobbing as I was trying to finish through tears. I really liked it though, and I loved the characters. Full Measures drew me in from the very first page and I couldn't put it down. After reading this book I cannot wait to read more from Rebecca Yarros. This book is so much more than just a love story, and I know it will stick with me.
Ember's life shatters when the soldiers knock on her door and deliver the news that her dad is never coming home. If that wasn't bad enough, it happens on her birthday. Not long after, she finds out that her boyfriend and her roommate have been sleeping together as well. Ember breaks up with her boyfriend and moves back to her hometown. She transfers to a local college in order to help her family out. Ember finally begins to heal with the help of her high school crush Josh. He was always the bad boy who was never wanting when it came to girls. Now he is her little brother's hockey coach and is also completely different than Ember ever expected. Ember is hesitant to start a new relationship after everything that has happened, but Josh isn't willing to let her go without a fight. Ember finally sees that Josh is worth taking a risk on and they begin seeing each other. But when a secret comes to light about Josh and his future, can Ember get past it and take a chance on love?
I really loved Josh. I thought that he was sweet and kind and also really sexy. He was in great shape from playing hockey and he could have any girl he wanted. But I loved that despite that, he was determined to have only Ember. He was patient with her and I loved how he was always there for her even when she thought that she didn't want him to be. I felt so sorry for Ember. She had been through so much, and on top of all that she gave up so much to take care of her family. She always put everyone else first and you could tell just how much she cared about those close to her. I liked that Josh got her to open up and really live life again. Ember and Josh had a lot of chemistry, and you could tell just how much they were attracted to each other. But they had such a strong connection that it was really obvious that they were perfect for each other. I knew from the start that these two had to be together, because there was no other option.
Overall, I thought that this book was really good and despite my ugly crying I really did enjoy it. The thing that kept me from giving this one a full five stars was that I felt there was a bit too much push and pull. Even though there was a lot going on and that had happened, it got a bit old after awhile and it started to annoy me. I didn't understand why it kept going on as long as it did, and I just wish there had been less of it. I also thought that there were a few times that both characters jumped to conclusions and that things would have been much simpler if they had just been honest with each other. I really did like all the characters though and I absolutely adored Ember's little brother Gus. He completely stole the show in this book, and I couldn't wait to see what he would say or do next. I also really loved how great Josh was with him, and you could tell that he really cared about him as well. This book was a really good love story, but it was also a story of loss and healing. I highly recommend this one to New Adult fans and anyone who loves an emotional and deep read. This is a must read for me and I think that pretty much anyone can find something to relate to with this book. I know that Ember and Josh will stick with me and that I will definitely be reading this book again. I look forward to reading more from Rebecca Yarros in the future as well.
