Guest Post with Author Rosanne Bittner and Giveaway

Please welcome author Rosanne Bittner  to RFTC. Rosanne is celebrating the release of her newest book, Paradise Valley and has stopped by to chat.

I've been writing for nearly thirty years and to date have had 57 novels published, all about the American West of the 1800's and Native Americans. I write romance, but not the typical bodice-ripping adventures. My stories are deep love stories, often family sagas told as a series. It is the hero and heroine's love that holds them together through the trials and tribulations of settling America's western frontiers. I absolutely love the Rockies, the Tetons, the Sierras, and the wide-open plains, prairies and desert land west of the Mississippi. In my books, I strive to tell the truth about the settling of the West and how it affected our American Indians, as well as the gritty depth of what our brave pioneers suffered in their search for free land and a better life.

I am a member of the Nebraska and Oklahoma Historical Societies, my local southwest Michigan historical society, Women Writing the West, Mid-Michigan Romance Writers of America (treasurer) and the national RWA, and a local charity group called the Coloma Lioness Club. I help run a family business and love doing things with my three young grandsons. If you visit my web site at www.rosannebittner.com, where all my titles are listed as well as a page that lists all my many writing awards; or you can visit me on Facebook. At either site you will learn news of new books to come as well as reprints of many of my past titles soon to be published in trade paperback and as e-books!

Hello to all! This “chick” is going to “ramble on” a bit about her new publication – PARADISE VALLEY, a July book from Sourcebooks. This is my 58th published novel (after 30 years of writing) and is available both in print and as an e-book. PARADISE VALLEY is a western historical romance, which is all I write, as I love, love, love American history and especially America’s Old West and stories about Native Americans. My books are filled with real history and locations. I get my fictitious characters involved and – wa-la! – My readers are learning real history as they read an exciting, romantic story filled with action and vivid descriptions of American’s magnificent western landscape.

PARADISE VALLEY takes a young woman and a rugged ranch owner on a journey in 1880’s Wyoming along the famed Outlaw Trail (which really exists – think Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid). Sage Lightfoot and Maggie Tucker are after outlaws who wronged both of them, and along the way they fall in love; but the dangers they face and secrets they hold could destroy their relationship. Their adventure leads them back to Sage’s ranch, called Paradise Valley, where final decisions must be made that will affect their future together.

Your blog post asked about my favorite characteristics in a hero and heroine. In a hero I want a “real” man – one with courage, one who is adept with fists and gun and a knowledge of the rugged land he’s out to conquer, a man who is tough on the outside but always has a vulnerable spot on the inside that is won over by the heroine – some need he realizes the heroine can fulfill for him. My heroes are never cruel to a woman (except for Zeke Monroe – in only one instance in my 7-book Savage Destiny series – and believe me, you won’t feel sorry for the woman – she is NOT the heroine!) I love the “cowboy” in a man, and love the dark danger of a Native American warrior. No other man in his right mind would mess with my heroes .. or with the women they love!

In turn, my heroines are no wilting flowers. They are tough, determined, mostly unafraid of the dangers they might face or the life handed to them by living in untamed, lawless country where the elements are as much a danger as some of the “untamed” people they sometimes face. My heroines are all-woman, while at the same time they are strong enough to stand right up to the tough heroes I write and wily enough to win them over (with the man hardly aware of what is happening to him)!

Most of all I enjoy reading – and writing – a damn good love story – not a bed-hopping story with gratuitous sex, but a really solid love story where the love shared by hero and heroine holds them together as they face the dangers of settling an untamed land. To me that’s real “romance.” Some of my books even involve an entire family. A day in the life of my characters might be simply running a ranch, no easy feat in the 1800’s – facing the sometimes wicked elements of prairie life, like tornadoes, prairie fires and devastating winters – facing Indian attacks, outlaws, or maybe a wealthy railroad man out to take their property from them. You name the subject, the danger, the possible challenges of settling the West, and I have written about it.

  1. I always thought I wanted to live during the time of the 'west'; but it would have been a hard life and I'm rather 'lazy'. Never the less, I love reading stories about the west, the people, and the times.
I noticed you are a member of the Oklahoma Historical Society, Rosanne. Have you lived in OK or is there a connection with the state other than your writing?

  7. Hello Rosanne! I'm "with" you as far as stories about deep, abiding love (as opposed to bodice rippers) with as much true history as possible in your western romances. We have not heard enough about the true nature of the Native Americans of the Southwest, their culture and love of the land and of family. All we've heard is about how blood thirsty they were--real savages. I'll tell you, I've seen more white savages that create murder and mayhem in our society today than the Native Americans ever did when they fought for their livelihoods, lands and families. I think I'm drawn to your stories for all of the above reasons. jdh2690@gmail.com
