Romance is Bliss Event with Vicki Wilkerson

Meet Bliss author, Vicki Wilkerson.

Vicki is a native of the Charleston, South Carolina, Lowcountry and loves to share her enchantment with the area with readers through her writing. Even in childhood, she enjoyed penning stories and poems—no doubt fueled by her grandfather's enthusiasm for telling tales himself. Where else—but in the South—could one find the interesting blend of salt water, eerie swamps, unwritten traditions and unique characters? In her spare time, she loves traveling, spending weekends at her family's lake house, playing golf and cooking (with lots of wine). Visit Vicki at http://www.vickiwilkerson.com.

Romance Rules the World

Romance rules! Literally. The world. Look at history, and you will see that many of the important events that changed the world were influenced by some kind of romance—from biblical times to white house drama—romance and its racy companion, sex, drive people to do things that may even seem uncharacteristic for them.

And who can blame someone from acting from romantic motivations? Romance is a necessary vehicle through which relationships, companionship and sex are all secured. The associated feelings around romance are powerful and drive people to pursue it—sometimes at any cost. Romance can even be addicting. And who wouldn’t want to be addicted to something that “feels” so good.

Romance makes its devotees feel giddy, dizzy, and elated. It makes us feel happy, fulfilled, and joyous. And it moves something within our heads, hearts, and even hips. It brings understanding and confusion. It takes our breath away and provides air to enable us to soar on figurative wings. And romance quite literally gives life and takes it away (think of all the babies that are born from it and all the people who die at the hands of others because of a bad romance).

I personally love romance because it fascinates me with all its complications and contradictions. I love it because it exhilarates me and puts me on edge. I love romance because I believe that there are good, honest people out there who are looking for it, too, and if that “right” someone is found, magic ensues. I also believe in happily-ever-after endings. In fact, I am counting on a happily-ever-after ending.

So, why do I write romance? Well, I write for myself and for my readers. Romance can sometimes last a season and is gone. A great book can remind us of how we felt when we first fell in love. I want to provide memories and experiences…and for some, even inspiration. Through romantic scenes, we can close our eyes and imagine a first glance, a first touch, or that first kiss. Reading romance puts us in touch with something very powerful…love.

In addition to reading about passion, readers can count on other things in a romance, as well. They know they are going to get a good story with a satisfying ending. In general, romances leave readers with positive feelings—and really good books teach readers valuable lessons. A lot can be packed into these compact stories.

Because romance rules the world, I hope I’m empowering women to continue to dream, to expect, and—when appropriate—to take chances, and to love.

Who said tempting a sweet Southern belle would be easy?

When rebel biker Bullworth Clayton gets tangled up with pastel-and-pearls-clad April Church, sparks fly. Sure, April would clearly rather work with anyone else, but if teaming up with Bull means a successful charity event for a sick little boy they both care about, then so be it.

April is baffled at how drawn she is to the leather-wearing, tattooed Bull—he just doesn’t fit with her simple, safe, country-club life. And as much as the handsomely rugged man tempts her, she still can’t shake the images of the tragic motorcycle accident from her past, which left her scarred and her father broken.

Bull tempts her to don a pair of leather pants and go for a ride with him, while April desperately tries to resist her attraction to the wild side and keep her exploits hidden from her small town. Will they be able to navigate their differences and find a middle road to love?

April backed up against the wall to better hide the crooked chrome she held. Of all the stupid things that could happen.

With her free hand, she brushed at the pleats on her skirt to straighten them. Then she switched the mirror into her right hand and smoothed out the other side. Everything was under control.

“What do you have there?” inquired a low, masculine voice from above her head.

She snapped to attention like she was about to undergo a military inspection.

A handsome, muscular man in a black bomber jacket towered above her, larger than life. His shoulder-length hair was pulled back into a neat ponytail. Golden streaks highlighted his nut-brown mane. His indigo-colored eyes perused her face. “Is something wrong?”

She twisted the strand of pearls that draped from her neck between her fingers with her free hand.

“No. Everything’s fine,” she said. It would be as soon as she could meet up with Mr. Morrow or some of the other members from the civic organizations.

“Then what are you hiding behind your back?”

He had seen. Oh, no. He had seen.

“Just a little mishap. I’m going to take care of it.”

“You ride?” The left corner of his mouth curled up. “In a skirt?”

“No.” She hoped her voice didn’t sound strained. “No, I’ve never ridden on a motorcycle before,”
 she said calmly.

He narrowed his eyes. “Then why are you walking around with a Harley dome billit mirror?”

That was a good question. Why was she? She held out the broken piece of the bike in front of her.

“I don’t know how it happened. I was opening my car door, and then—”

He took it from her, examined it, and gave it back. “Let me guess. It just fell.” He tilted his head, exposing a strong, angular jawline. “All by itself.”

“That’s right. It really did happen that way. Exactly.” He probably didn’t believe a word she said. And she couldn’t blame him. She heard unlikely stories like hers from claimants at the insurance company all the time.

“Ahhh, I see. Sure it did,” he said. But the left side of his grin inched upward again…”

    1. I don't ride; however, I did when I did the research for the book. It was quite a memorable ride! My brother-in-law frightened me to death by going way too fast on a very dangerous road!

  2. I like that you give us positive endings. You are right; we need something positive to hold onto. You're helping us to remember to go forward, to look ahead with hope and with passion. Thanks for a lovely post.

  8. Thank you for your wonderful post. I've been on a motorcycle a few times (the guy who drove was my boyfriend at the time); it was all fun except until he decided to weave in and out of traffic on a busy highway--that freaked me out. (It's no wonder I broke it off not long after that!)
Although I am a native of New Jersey, I love the Lowcountry (and reading stories that take place there!); my brother lives on John's Island and I have other relatives who live in Goose Creek. I hope to visit them all sometime next year!
Thank you for providing awesome books to read!

    1. The Lowcountry is one of the most beautiful areas in the world! I'm glad you enjoy stories set there. I couldn't imagine even writing a story set anywhere else because I am so tied to this place. I have Lowcountry blood.

  9. Hi Vicki! What made you go the bikers route for a male lead? Do you know any bikers personally?
    Thanks for the giveaway!

    1. Yes, I do know some bikers (friends and relatives). I chose a biker as the hero because I witnessed a certain strata of people who had misunderstandings about them. I wanted to make a statement about "not judging a book by its cover," if you will...

    1. I find it fun to read about familiar things because it helps a reader connect, and then there is always something that surprises, as well.

  12. I love Romance as well! I wanted to know if Vicki writes using characters that are similar to herself. Do you ever model a character after you?

    1. Some of my characters have traits that are similar to mine. I am a people watcher, and I file away all that I see to use in future characters.
