My First Love Event with Monica Murphy

My First Love

Ah, first love. There’s nothing better than those memories of discovering our first love, am I right? The butterflies. The tingly feeling. All the hope and happiness that fills you up and makes you feel as if you’re floating on air…

We can experience all sorts of first love feelings. For people, for pets, for things. Maybe some of you think that’s a stretch, but I believe you can fall in love with a thing, a hobby, an activity. It’s why people pursue sports so passionately, don’t you think? Little Susie doesn’t just love ice skating, she’s pursuing it with her very heart and soul, practicing all those hours, devoting all that time and energy to a sport that she l-o-v-e-s. And someday, she could become the greatest ice skater in the world, all because of her passion.

My first love isn’t a person. Nor is it a pet (though I had some pretty great pets when I was a kid!). My first love was…

Reading.

I discovered magazines first. MAD magazine, to be exact. I was very small, not even in school yet, and my older cousin Lisa had a huge collection of MAD magazines, and I loved pouring over them. Trying to figure out the words. Next were Archie Comics. Oh, how I loved those! I reflect now that they were my first foray into romance. The love triangle between Archie, Veronica and Betty. Rich boy Reggie. Silly Jughead. Peeps know what I’m talking about since we have Riverdale on TV now.

Next I graduated to Dr. Seuss books. And all those other books that accompanied the Dr. Seuss titles. Does anyone know what I’m talking about? They weren’t exactly Dr. Seuss, but they were similar and I loved them. This is how I learned to read. And once I went into school, I became one of the best readers in my class.

Books were my passion. I read wherever I could. I got my first library card at age six. My grandma and my mother are both voracious readers, and I’m sure I got my love of books from them. I read everything I could, even encyclopedias! The Scholastic Book Fair was the highlight of the school year for me, and when those weekly reader book order forms went around, I wanted to buy everything. Too bad my mom always put me on a book budget.

My love of reading turned me on to my love of writing, and sometimes I still can’t believe I’m a writer. That I not only get to read books, but I get to write them too. For a living.

Somebody pinch me.

Love doesn’t always have to involve another person. We can love a thing, or a hobby. And we can turn that passion into something meaningful.

Something that can change our entire lives.

One minute I’m minding my own business at a party and the next I meet this woman who blows my mind. She’s beautiful. Smart. Funny. A little shy. I’m immediately drawn to her. We make an instant connection.

The problem?

Lady Susanna Sumner lives in London.

I live in California

I play professional football.

She works part-time at an art gallery and lives off her family’s money.

Her family is nobility. I come from a single mom who always scraped to get by.

Susanna and I should have nothing in common. But when we’re together, it’s…

Electric.

What are we supposed to do? Can we really make this work? I can’t give up my career. And I can’t ask her to move to California for me. All I know is, I want her in my life.

Desperately.
