ARC Review: The Lady’s Disgrace by Callie Hutton

The Lady’s Disgrace is book three of the Marriage Mart Mayhem series. I did not like this book. It was predictable and kind of generic; nothing really stuck out very memorable and I didn’t really enjoy the characters. It wasn’t horrible or else I wouldn’t have finished it just didn’t do anything for me.

Lady Abigail Lacey is a disgrace all because she fell in love with the wrong man, and ended up jilted, and the laughingstock of London. The only solution is to quickly marry. The man to step up to the plate is a childhood friend and her very first crush. Rector Joseph Fox was in the right place at the right time, when he stopped by his childhood friends house the Duke of Manchester to solicit contributions help to start a free school. He went to London looking for money and left with a new wife, whose dowry is enough to cover everything he needs for the school. Joseph has always admired, respected and even loved Abigail from afar and never expected he would get the change to marry her. Abigail agreed to the marriage because she was tired of London and wanted something worthwhile to do with her life and the wife of a rector was the perfect thing.

Abigail originally wanted just a marriage of convenience after the conception of the heir but after experiencing the pleasures of the marriage bed and with the understanding and companionship of Joseph she soon realizes what she felt before was nothing compared to her feelings now. The only dark cloud on their happy ending is a series of accidents that keep happening to Abigail. Joseph knows it something more than just bad luck and confronts her brother about it and hires someone to look in on it. Someone is not happy with the marriage between Joseph and Abigail. Hopefully Joseph can find out who is behind it all before anything really dangerous happens to Abigail.

ARC Review: The Duke's Quandary by Callie Hutton

The Duke’s Quandary by Callie Hutton was a great read! I thoroughly enjoyed this great romance. The characters were interesting and the writing was engaging. I’ve never read anything by Callie Hurtton and was not sure what to expect, but I was pleasantly surprised. First, our heroine -Miss Penelope Clayton. Poor Penelope is a devoted botanist. She absolutely loves science and is filled with fulfillment when she is digging in dirt on her hands and knees. Luckily for Penelope she lives on outside of London in the country. She is able to do whatever she wants and spend all day on her scientific findings. She writes to The Linnean Society of London under a man’s name since women are not able to submit their findings. Penelope’s luck runs out when her aunt decides that she must find a husband and have a season in London. For Penelope this is horrendous news. She is very socially awkward and prefers the country.

Drake, Duke of Manchester has recently become a duke upon his father’s death. He didn’t expect to have to fill his shoes so quickly or so soon. He doesn’t feel adequate and is consumed with worry about his three single sisters. The two oldest sisters are on their third and fourth season, he is worried about them not finding husbands. He informs them that they must find husbands this season. At first sight, Drake is very arrogant and full of himself. He bosses everyone, including his mother, around. He informs his sisters that they must marry even if it is not for love. Drake tries to handle his new duties as a duke and marry off his sisters when his mother informs him that Penelope will be joining them for the season. She asks that he introduce her into society and help her find a husbands. Obviously, we can figure out how excited Drake is about his new charge. Aside from all this task Drake decides that he has to find “the perfect duchess” to marry. He already has someone in mind and believes that she will fill the role of duchess perfectly and to his standards.

When Drake and Penelope meet it is filled with catastrophe. Penelope is socially awkward but also nervous, she also needs her glasses to see and on her aunt’s advice to look more fashionable, she takes them off in public. Needless to say it is a big embarrassing scene for Penelope and Drake has very little patience with her. At first it is difficult to see how the author can bring together such very different people, but she does and in a very endearing manner. Although Drake has decided to help Penelope (many times very unsuccessfully) he is really the one that changes. Luckily for him, his sisters are always quick to put him in his place, even when he is being a terrible jerk. His mother is also full of wisdom and offers him guidance along the way. Not to mention our heroine Penelope. This was my favorite part of the story. Typically authors would transform Penelope into a goddess and Drake would fall in love, but that is not what happens in this story and I really applaud the author for her creativity and authenticity. I really enjoyed the story and Hutton’s writing. I could not put the book down. I hope she has some ideas in mind for his sisters who were very fun characters. I loved the surprised ending, and was not expecting it! Definitely worth a read! Just try not to have any sharp objects, there are times when Drake is overly infuriating!

ARC Review: The Elusive Wife by Callie Hutton

If you enjoy a funny book with a Regency flair and a clever plot twist then The Elusive Wife is the book for you. It is a cute, well written story with charming, flawed characters. I thoroughly enjoyed reading it.

Jason Cavendish, Earl of Coventry, knows that an arranged marriage is on the horizon, but when the word comes for him actually marry he does not take it well. He shows up totally drunk, marries the girl and leaves immediately after. Lady Jane Olivia Grant is not thrilled to be marrying a stranger, but she cooperates with her father’s wishes. She is, however, hugely annoyed when the groom appears in a fully drunken state, then leaves. She takes the bull by the horns by traveling to London to stay with her friend. She proceeds to take society by storm as the new beauty, Lady Olivia, and catches Jason’s rapt attention. Jason does not recognize her because he was too drunk to really see her and he married a girl named Jane. What follows is a fun, but predictable romp where Jason falls for his own wife while feeling guilty about it and Olivia gets her revenge.

The Elusive Wife is not a great book, but it certainly is a good one. It has that traditional Regency feeling with a more modern twist and enough steam to keep most readers happy. Jason was not a bad guy; he was just very far gone into rebellion against a marriage planned by his father. Olivia was resourceful and determined. The story moved along nicely to a very satisfying ending. Readers will definitely enjoy this one.
