She watched Keane take in the two newest Christmas trees, one in front of O’Riley’s Pub, the other in front of Reclaimed Woods, both decorated in simple red and gold balls. The only sound around them was the soft trickle of the water flowing from the fountain and some lovelorn crickets mourning the dawn’s lack of warmth.

“Legend states that if you make a wish with a true heart, true love will find you,” she said.

He met her gaze. “Legend also states that if you put your tooth under your pillow the Tooth Fairy will leave you cash.”

She slowed, as always the fountain calling to her to make a wish. Keane slowed too, looking at her with a question.

She searched her pockets for change, but could only come up with a dog treat. “Damn.” It was the swear jar’s fault, all her spare change always ended up in there.

“What?”

“I wanted to make a wish,” she said.

A small smile crossed his face. “You want to make a wish? You’ve lived here for how long and you’ve never made one?”

“Oh, I have.” She paused. “I like to.”

This garnered her a raised brow. “How many times have you wished?”

She bit her lower lip.

“More than once?”

Well, crap. How had they gotten on this subject? “Um…”

“More than…five?”

“Gee, would you look at the time?” she asked and tried to go but he caught her and brought her back around, his smile now a broad grin.

“Fine,” she said. “If you must know, I toss a coin in every time I walk by.”

He lost the battle with his laughter and she stared at him. Seriously, he had the best laugh. “It worked for Pru, I’ll have you know,” she told him. “She wished for true love to find Finn, and then he fell in love with her.”

And Willa had been wishing ever since, even knowing how ridiculous and silly it was.

“So…you’ve been wishing for true love for who exactly?” he asked.

She stared at him in dismay. How had she not thought this through? “Me,” she admitted, slapping her pockets because surely she had even a penny. “But I intend to fix that right now. I’ll just wish for love for someone else.”

“Who?” he asked warily.

ARC Review: Sweet Little Lies by Jill Shalvis

Sweet Little Lies is the first book in the new Heartbreaker Bay series by Jill Shalvis. I have enjoyed books by Jill Shalvis for years, and she has always been one of those contemporary authors that you just know are going to be good regardless of the story. While I do still enjoy her books, her last several have been on the predictable side. I think part of that is the number of books she has written at this point and the fact that her stories are similar. Sweet Little Lies was still a good read, but if you are a contemporary romance reader don't expect this one to break any new ground. 

Pru captains a San Francisco tour boat and admires Finn O'Riley from afar. She knows that he is Mr. Right, but she also knows that he isn't for her. But when she becomes part of his circle of friends, an accident leads to them acting on feelings that are more than friendly. Though Pru wants to be with Finn and wants him to be happy, she has a secret that could destroy everything. 

Jill Shalvis is great at creating likable characters and these two were no exception. Finn and Pru were both genuinely good people who wanted the best for those they cared about. They were loyal and had great chemistry. I enjoyed seeing them get to know one another and grow closer as their banter was fun and playful. I kept waiting for the big secret to come out because I knew that was going to be a big deal and I was worried about how it would affect both of them. But I really liked these two together and I really believed that they were supposed to be together. 

I have to admit that part of my problem with this story and some of Jill's books being so predictable lately is that I am kind of over the "big secret" that isn't revealed until the story is almost over. I feel like so many times it is held back just for the drama and it did feel a bit like that here. I also felt like this book was one of those where it felt like she was trying to throw all the tropes into one story. While I understand that it is impossible to avoid some things being predictable, it just came off as too much for me here. While I love Jill Shalvis and she is one of the reasons I started reading romance novels in the first place, it just feels like her stories seem to be mostly the same with just some of the details changed at this point. I still enjoy her books, but at this point it seems to be that I just like them rather than love them. If you are a fan of contemporary romance books, Jill Shalvis should definitely be on your go-to list. But if you are looking for something new or really different, this might not be what you are looking for.

ARC Review: My Kind of Wonderful by Jill Shalvis

My Kind of Wonderful is the second book in the Cedar Ridge series from Jill Shalvis. Each book is a standalone, though the characters are interconnected. I have been a Jill Shalvis fan for years, and I think if you are a contemporary romance fan she is a must read author! 

Being a cancer survivor, Bailey Moore has a second chance at life and she intends to live it to the fullest. When she meets Hudson Kincaid, she fully intends to enjoy him as well as Cedar Ridge. But Hudson isn't the type to love and let go, and Bailey isn't willing to stick around. But with the attraction and chemistry between them, Hudson finds himself drawn to Bailey in a way that he hasn't felt before. Can Hudson convince Bailey to take a chance on a future with him and stick around in Cedar Ridge? 

As much as I enjoy a strong heroine, I had a bit of trouble relating to Bailey here. I liked her attitude towards her second chance, but I did think that she went too far at times. I just found her hard to relate to, and I didn't like some of the things she did even though I understood where she was coming from. Hud was strong, sexy, and charming and I liked him a lot. I don't think that I have come across a single hero from Shalvis yet that I didn't like, and Hud was no exception. I thought that these two had really great chemistry and they also had connection that just grew stronger as the book progressed. As much as I had some problems with Bailey herself, I did like her and Hudson together. 

The other thing that kept me from rating this one higher though was that while I liked the story, it felt so similar to what I have seen from Shalvis before. After having read several of her stories at this point, things have become predictable for me. While this book was good, it just felt a bit too cookie-cutter to me. I had a tough time really getting into this book and I kept wanting to put it down. I think part of that was because of Bailey. While I am a huge Shalvis fan, this series hasn't been my favorite. I know I will continue to read more from Shalvis in the future, and I hope that the next book in the Cedar Ridge series, Nobody But You, will be more of what I love from Shalvis than this book was. Jacob is a character that I find really interesting and I can't wait to get his story.

ARC Review: All I Want by Jill Shalvis

All I Want is the newest installment to the Animal Magnetism series from Jill Shalvis. Though it is book seven in the series, each book is a standalone story containing interconnected characters. Each of these books is so much fun to read, and I always know that I am going to enjoy the story when Jill's name is on the cover. All I Want was no exception, and it was just as adorable as what I have come to know from Jill Shalvis. 

After the childhood she had, Zoe is happy to be settled in Sunshine Idaho. Being a pilot allows her to work and give flying lessons on the side to help pay the bills. But besides her work and family, Zoe is looking for something else and has been trying to find it with a series of blind dates. So when her brother asks her to allow his best friend to rent a room from her for a few weeks she agrees as long as he agrees to her house rules. But when Zoe meets Parker, things immediately spark between them and Zoe finds him getting under her skin. Zoe finds herself wanting something with Parker and though she knows she should stay away, she can't help but give in to her feelings. With Parker only in town for a few weeks though, will she end up with a broken heart? 

I liked Zoe and Parker together. They were really cute, and they had great chemistry. These two seemed to just get each other right away and their connection was natural. They were sweet and funny, and I loved how they couldn't help but fall for one another. I will say that I didn't really connect with them that well, but I did enjoy their story. Zoe was hard for me to relate to, and I thought that she had a few issues. Parker was the same though, which is part of what made them work well together. While I did like them, I just thought that each of them made some questionable choices here, and I didn't always like the way they acted.

Overall, this was another great addition to the series and I did enjoy it. Fans of Shalvis will enjoy the humor here as well as the sweet and romantic emotional moments that always set her contemporary romance stories apart from others. I did think that this one was a bit predictable and there wasn't really anything new or different. But it was a solid story and I think a lot of readers will really like Zoe and Parker together. If you are a fan of Jill Shalvis you will definitely want to check this one out, and if you are new to her books this is a great place to start. The Animal Magnetism series is one of my favorites, and are well worth the read.

ARC Review: Second Chance Summer by Jill Shalvis

Jill Shalvis has quickly become an automatic must read for me. She is a fun author and her characters are always enjoyable. “Second Chance Summer” is the first book in the Cedar Ridge series. There are some things that I’ve come to expect with Jill Shalvis and her characters. First, the male is also alpha but with a mix of very sweet and tender guy. For example, her heroes are always everyday heroes. They are not multi-dollar millionaires but a firefighter or in this case, a firefighter/ rescue worker. Aidan Kincaid is as tough as they come in the hero department. Another aspect of Shalvis is that her heroines are always strong but they are also very vulnerable and sometimes boarder on fragile. But both her hero and heroine have chemistry and there are guaranteed laughable moments.

Lily Danville left her hometown and never planned on returning. There were too many ghosts in her closet and she wanted a new beginning for herself. Through a series of events she finds herself back home and coming face to face with her ghosts. Including Aidan. Lily is a very sweet character. She carries around a lot of guilt about things that happened in the past that were not her fault. One of those things she felt guilty about was her feelings for Aidan. Aidan is more straightforward. He still has feelings for Lily, never got over her and wants a second chance with her.

As I mentioned before there are certain characteristics of Shalvis’ storytelling that I’ve come to expect. I really liked both Lilly and Aidan but I felt they were very similar to her previous characters. They had a past they both needed to get over and the heroine has to heal. So even though I did not love this story it did feel comfortable. I know that when I want to read a sweet and romantic story about two very strong willed people, who will undoubtedly have comical moments, Shalvis will deliver this. On the same token, I would like to see something different in her characters or at least the storyline. When her fans read “Second Chance Summer” they will not be disappointed because it is true Shalvis romance, like only she can create. Fun, intense, sweet and tender all in one book

ARC Review: Still the One by Jill Shalvis

Jill Shalvis is a very successful contemporary author. Her books are frequently seen on the New York Times bestsellers list but I’ve just recently started to read her books. “Still the One” by Jill Shalvis is an example of why Shalvis is so successful. Her books are impossible to put down and her characters are impossible to forget.

Let’s start with the heroine- Darcy Stone. I just loved Darcy. She is a mixture of strength and vulnerability. I love that her last name is Stone because it fits her so perfectly. When the story begins Darcy is working for hunky physical therapist A.J. Colten. A.J. and Darcy are night and day. He is very organized and straight laced. Darcy is definitely not. She loves to live on the wild side. Previous to her accident she was a writer for a traveling magazine. She loved to wander around the world. When she had a horrible car accident it was A.J. that helped her heal with his physical therapy. A.J. is like a member of the family. He is very close to both of Darcy’s siblings. When in a moment of vulnerability Darcy turned to him he rejected her. Darcy has a lot of anger and frustration because of this but takes it out on A.J. by bickering with him. Although Darcy comes off very tough she is a very sweet and loyal person. She is also incredibly passionate about rescuing dogs.

A.J. comes off as he has it all together but he really doesn’t. He carries his own insecurities and his own wounds from the past. Even though A.J. seems indifferent to Darcy, unless it’s to get on her case for not taking care of herself and not eating healthy, he is really trying to be honorable and not cross the line of friendship. A.J’s stoicism is challenged when he has to ask Darcy a favor. A.J. is a successful physical therapist but he often has to get grants in order to help patients pay for their care. He has a meeting with a potential investor that is willing to help and Darcy would be a perfect example of his abilities as a physical therapist. Needless to say A.J. and Darcy can’t resist their mutual attraction and as the elements conspire against them they are forced to extend their trip and their relationship finally changes.

I really enjoyed this story and the characters. Even though this is a part of a series “Animal Magnetism” and characters from other books make an appearance this is easily a stand alone. I was so happy to see Darcy and A.J. finally work up the courage to admit their feelings for one another. A.J. was such a great guy. He really did so many things out of love for Darcy, it was so sweet and endearing to read. Needless to say I really enjoyed this beautiful story and highly recommend it. Shalvis delivers a fun, sweet, romantic and steamy story. Looking forward to reading more by her!

ARC Review: Merry Christmas, Baby by Jill Shalvis

Fans of the Lucky Harbor series won't want to miss this one! Such a cute and quick read that I admit left me in happy tears. Reading this was just bittersweet. I'm a huge fan of the Lucky Harbor series and Chloe and Sawyer are not only my favorite couple of the series but one of my all-time favorite couples, so it was fun to see them again and be part of the next chapter in their lives.

Chloe and Sawyer are two of my favorite characters and to be able to see that together again five years later and still so much in love was great. Who does want to see sexy Sheriff Sawyer and wildcat Chloe become parents for the first time? These two share some cute and tender moments that will left with a smile on my face and tears in my eyes.

I won't lie I do wish there was a bit more but that is only because I don't want the series to be done. I will say that Merry Christmas, Baby was extremely satisfying. It was fun to not only get to see Sawyer and Chloe, but a few of the other characters that we've all come to know and love from the series. A fantastic ending to a superb series and I couldn't ask for more.
